"Lars and the Real Girl is a movie about a man named Lars Lindstrom who for most of his life went unloved. He lived for a long time in the garage of his brother’s house, keeping to himself. The conflict begins when Lars develops a delusion that this doll Bianca is a real person. Lars tells his brother and sister-in-law that he met Bianca on the internet and that they are dating. Lars brother Gus and his sister-in-law Karin were very worried and consulted the family doctor who is also a physiologist. Lars begins to go to the doctor with his girlfriend every week because she needed treatment, because she was sick, or so he thought. While in the doctors, the family doctor began an informal psychology sessions with Lars. Eventually the whole community begins treating Lars’ girlfriend like a real person and Lars begins to realize that people really do care about him. So I had the impression from the description of this movie and the trailer that it was a comedy. The tr ... " [More]

"Here is some commentary on surprises and snubs. A week late, but I have some time here and now.In the Best Actor category, the surprise nomination is Tommy Lee Jones for In the Valley of Elah. He has not previously been nominated for any similar awards. Surprising omission? A long shot, but better than Jones was Ryan Gosling for Lars and the Real Girl; he's received several nominations (and no wins) to date. I think prediction-wise, though, you best be looking at Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood. He's swept them all so far.In the Supporting Actor category, there are no real surprises or snubs. (Think Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men come the big day, though). In the Best Actress category, a surprise nomination for Laura Linney for The Savages (she's had no love up until now). There are no real snubs, though, because the win will probably without doubt go to Julie Christie for Away From Her, with the other four nominations acting sort of like wild- ... " [More]

"i have a wonderful picture of all my movie ticket stubs from this year in a pile but i can’t get it transferred to my filmblog (yes, i save my ticket stubs and scrapbook them at the end of the year…i know, it’s sad really)! armed with discount movie coupons, i saw 118 movies this year at the theater and, as usual, it was really hard to narrow them down but here’s my list, for what it’s worth. some are from 2006 that i didn’t see until later. my 15 favorite movies at the theater in 2007the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert fordthe diving bell and the butterflythe lives of othersjunothe painted veilonceno country for old menthe darjeeling limitedwaitressstarting out in the eveningsunshinefirst snow zodiacin the shadow of the moonacross the universehonorable mention (alphabetically)2 days in paris 3:10 to yuma51 birch streetdirty dancing (20th anniversary)dreamgirlshairspra yinto the wildthe jane austen book clubkiller of sheepknock ... "As noted in take 1, David Reinhard devotes his sunday column this week to Juno. Predictably,  Reinhard praises the film for its ???life-affirming text and subtext??? (wow, the text and subtext deliver the same message, must be powerful). For those outside of Oregon, Reinhard is The Oregonian's designated columnist from the right. More particularly, he's a Republican loyalist and conservative Christian.Reinhard's interpretation largely rests on his reading of Juno's encounter with classmate Su-Chin (Valerie Tian) outside the ???Women Now??? clinic. Su-Chin's exclamation, ???Your baby has fingernails!??? is taken by Reinhard as a moment that alerts ???Juno to the humanity of the unborn child she carries.??? And, as a result, she decides to have the baby rather than an abortion. This is, of course, one way of reading the sequence of events in the film's first act. However, it is not a point so tightly made that one would jump to a ???pro-life??? interpretation of the text unless one ... " [More]

"God, this film is beautiful. There are parts that are jaw-droppingly, uncomfortably hilarious that set you up for the one-two punch of the tear-jerker scenes, which I didn't see coming because I had not heard a THING about this film...and I loved it all the more because of that fact, I think. I'm also DEFINITELY going to buy this score, as David Torn has crafted the PERFECT rainy day soundtrack. Ryan Gosling once again delivers an Oscar worthy performance (how does he do it?!?), and I would daresay there isn't a bad acting performance in the entire film. DEFINITELY GO SEE THIS! " [More]

"I loved this film!. Surprisingly good because despite the fact that one of the main characters is a sex doll  the film contains no nudity and very little foul language. Very refreshing. Pace is a little slow buy it fits the story. I also like that it's NOT crowded with lots of big name stars - that helps the small town feel of the flick. It kind of has a "Fargo" feel.Very funny but still powerful enough to make me cry at the end. " [More]
