Directed by Bryan Bertino.
A suburban couple returning to their semi-secluded house after attending a wedding finds their lives suddenly thrown into chaos with the arrival of three malevolent, masked strangers in director Bryan Bertino's tense tale of survival. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star as the couple forced to resort to violence they never thought themselves capable of as they struggle for their lives, and model-turned-actress Gemma Ward continues her transition from the catwalk to the silver screen as one of the merciless masked invaders. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"I saw The Strangers. I'd give it a 2/5. There wasn't really a plot, just people being chased in and out of their house all night. There was no explination as to why the strangers were doing what they were doing, which wasn't necessarily needed, but this movie needed something else to make itinteresting, and it just didn't have anything. It basically went like this::: Couple fights Creeps show up Long game of hide and seek End Credits *shrug* just didn't do it for me " [More]

"It was a total waste of my time and money. I have seen better acting in high schools plays and more scary scenes on Scoby -do cartoons. There was no explanation of what was going on or no ending. Who told the story? Who was the one calling 911 in the beginning.? Did they catch the intruders? " [More]

"This review of "The Strangers" contains spoilers. Proceed at your own risk. "The Strangers" is a perfect example of the current problem with horror movies: the need to humanize the "bad guys." With the recent reimagining of "Halloween," not to mention the latest installment in the "Saw" series…and the latter "Nightmare on Elm Street" flicks and a dozen other recent and classic horror films, writers tend to give our masked killers a backstory, a reason for being the way they are. It is to the film´s great advantage, then, when the end credits begin to roll, we´re not left with antagonists abused as children, born into backwoods families or having experienced any other type of trauma. When Kristen McKay and James Hoyt (Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman) retreat to his parents house following a wedding-and presumably a fight-they are soon stalked by three masked strangers. I´m shocked at that simple log line. Really, I am. There is nothing more to "The Strangers." ... " [More]

"From the first preview I saw for The Strangers, I was excited to see this movie. It appeared to be a return to a simple, desperation, terror around every corner, sort of horror flick. The movie did not dissapoint. The Strangers revolves around a couple who've gone to a secluded house for what was supposed to a be a romantic get away. As the two start to sort through their relationship issues, they receive an unexpected visitor...at 4 in the morning. From that very first knock on the door I, and everyone else in the theatre, was on the edge of their seat anticipating what was coming next. The very few lines that were spoken by the aggressors were absolutely terrifying. As the film unfolds, we find that the young couple are being stalked like wild game by three masked aggressors who seemingly have no intent to let them leave alive--as well as know motive for any of their actions. The thing that is incredibly disturbing about this film is that the actions of the three masked capt ... " [More]

"Expecting a romantic evening alone, James (Scott Speedman) and Kristen (Liv Tyler) are unexpectedly thrust into a torturous game of hide and seek when a band of marauders appear on their doorstep. Undoubtedly influenced by the oeuvre of the Charles Manson "Family" and the events that led to the death of Sharon Tate and three others, The Strangers is surprisingly chilling in its depiction of a couples desperate attempts to overcome a seemingly omnipresent cadre of killers bent on fulfilling their murderous urges. Ultimately an unnervingly candid depiction of the motivation behind such brutality with the horror magnified by the rudimentary mask of the male intruder and the deadened eyes of the females kewpie doll visages. "Hear that? That is the sound of countless Botox-enhanced faces within the film industry simultaneously stretching to a smile after the opening weekend of ‘Iron Man.’ As everything else in these current economically shaky times, the film industry hobbled into 2008, weakened by a writers strike and sagging returns. Who would have thought Robert Downey Jr. would be the one to save us from this mess? But in he flew (granted, he was playing a character by the name of Tony Stark, but really, what’s the difference?), cracking $100 million in its first weekend alone. Of course, studio execs are quick to point out all the ‘firsts’ and “biggests’ for the film – the first non-sequel film to reach that benchmark in May; Downey’s biggest opening day ever; the first comic book-inspired film that was released under a waning crescent moon to gross that much; the biggest debut of a character with an incredibly angular goatee… and so on. ...
