Directed by Bruce A. Evans.
A hardened detective enters into a tenuous symbiotic relationship with the vicious serial killer she is tracking after earning the respect of the murderous madman in this vicious psychological thriller starring Demi Moore, Kevin Costner, and William Hurt. Earl Brooks (Costner) is a successful businessman, noted philanthropist, and loving father. He's the kind of man that no one would ever suspect of being a notorious serial killer, but then again history's most dubious psychopaths are often the quiet neighbor who no one would ever suspect capable of committing such unspeakable atrocities. Until now, no one has had any reason to link Earl Brooks with the heinous crimes of the dreaded Thumbprint Killer. Even his beautiful wife (Marg Helgenburger) and teenage daughter (Danielle Panabaker) could never conceive of such an awful truth. But when Mr. Brooks's dark side begins to outshine his sane exterior, an amateur photographer (Dane Cook) captures the killer succumbing to his murderous instinct on film. Now, as Mr. Brooks is pursued by tenacious detective Tracy Atwood (Moore) and forced to bend to the will of an opportunistic bystander, the killer who was once able to keep his murderous alter ego (Hurt) in check finds his control steadily slipping. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"I didn't see the Shia LaBeouf-in-a-suburb remake of Rear Window, it's called disturbia, but I thought that was an interesting twist. No one's going to believe a sixteen-year-old delinquent on house arrest. " [More]

"Some of the scariest, and funniest, movies featuring serial killers have been those located in the "normal" surroundings of suburbia. Here's my tentative list: 1.) Scream - Butchering buxom high-schoolers for their lack of knowledge of horror movie trivia. Fun times. 2.) Serial Mom - Kathleen Turner as a June Cleaver-esque suburban housewife that just so happens to be obsessed with serial killers and begins her own fun-filled foray into the field she's so fascinated with. 3.) The 'Burbs - Suburban gossip mongers believe their new neighbors are serial killers. Cameo by Corey Feldman makes this a winner. 4.) Mr. Brooks - Respected community man moonlights as a psychopath. Yay. 5.) Freeway - Keifer Sutherland escapes the monotony of his suburban life and perfect wife (played amazingly by Brooke Shields) by crusing the freeway for nubile young girls to terrorize. Finding out what's in the man's shed is more than reason enough to watch the film. 6.) Arsenic and Old Lace - Two of the swe ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Can you take Crash Davis seriously as a bad guy? Kevin Costner, who’s so good at inhabiting characters from baseball players to…baseball players, tries to find his dark side in Mr. Brooks, writer-director Bruce A. Evans’ thriller about a man who isn’t quite what he seems to be. Mr. Brooks, a righteous citizen and family man, is also Mr. Serial Killer. In Costner’s hands, though, he’s more like a big meanie with a petulant scowl, OCD tendencies, and pretty good aim. We even get an additional actor (William Hurt) to play Brooks’ shoulder-devil, helpfully sparing Costner from having to project too much inner malevolence. Hurt’s performance as the goading Marshall—“Why do you fight it?” he asks in a deliciously evil rumble—is the best thing about the movie. But the character himself wears out his welcome (really, does no one notice Brooks talking to himself?) as does Evans’ and co-writer ... " [More]

"The only reasons i went to see "Mr. Brooks" was because my grandma wanted to see it because Kevin Costner is in it. But i can honestly say that it is the best movie i've seen in theaters this year. Everything about this movie was well thought out and it made you think along with the main character. It didn't have everything laid out on a silver platter for you and for someone who is not a regular movie go-er their would be alot that you would miss. They leave a lot of it up to the imagination and i love that. It show's you that there doesn't need to be a bunch of blood and gore for a thriller to be great. This movie had a great plot, a good cast and a solid director. Overall i would say that Mr. Brooks is one of the most underrated movies this year. If you haven't already seen this movie i recommend it to the max. You won't be dissapointed. " [More]

"MR. BROOKS***rated R (for strong bloody violence, some graphic sexual content, nudity and language)2 hrs.written by: Bruce Evans & Reynold Gideonproduced by: Kevin Costner, Reynold Gideon & Jim Wilsondirected by: Bruce EvansThere are certain actors out there that I consider "aversion actors" these are those actors that you see in a movie trailer or on a poster for an upcoming movie and he or she just make your skin crawl and not in a good way. Nicholas Cage and Alec Baldwin are a couple actors that fall into this category for me. These guys are just kinda slimy to me, I dunno what it is. Once in a while, I'll like them in a role but that's usually cuz the characters they play are slimy, usually. It's not like I won't watch movies with these actors, it's just that I'm a lil more hesitant. I need to be won over. I mention all this cuz I'm certain that Kevin Costner and Demi Moore are "aversion actors" for many people but I happe ... " [More]

"Costner is brillent in this film. You want to see him succeed at killing. Dane Cook was casted well but not the best for the part, he still talks in his comic ways on screen. This thriller will get you hooked till the last shot. " [More]

"I watched this movie, not even knowing what it was about. I left the theater very enjoyed, and I talked forever about it with my friends. I highly recommend this to anyone who like thrillers, you will certainly be pleased. Kevin Coster plays a man who is rich, famous, and has a nice family, but who gets a kick out of murdering random innocent people. One night, he is a little careless and Dane Cook's character sees him commit a murder. Rather than go to the police, Dane Cook confronts Kevin about it because he got a thrill from watching the murder. The two plan to commit another crime, but beforehand many questions are raised about a whole lot of different subjects. From there, the movie plays out extremely well giving the viewer an exciting ride. This film opens up way more questions than most thrillers and manages to smoothly close them all within the film, providing an amazing viewing experience. I highly recommend this film! " [More]
