Directed by Pete Travis.
Forest Whitaker, Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, and Matthew Fox star in director Pete Travis' Roshomon-style thriller in which an assassination attempt on the President of the United States is detailed from five unique perspectives. As the president arrives in Madrid, gunshots ring out. An American tourist (Whitacker) has captured footage of the would-be assassin on videotape, and now as the stories of the other four witnesses unfold each essential piece of the puzzle quickly falls into place. Only when all of the stories are told will the chilling truth to this shocking crime finally emerge. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"This movie was well shot and pieced together, with little twists and turns to keep me interested. It also was slightly predictable and lost me around half-way through. The gimmick of "point of view" worked to a certain degree, but then became quite a limiting factor to the story for me. I wanted to see scenes come to more completion, I wanted to see the story progress past the 30 minutes that the story captures. Its strength was in the camera work and editing, this made it enjoyable to watch for me. " [More]

"If I didn´t know any better, "Vantage Point" could be a sibling of television series "24." Terrorism, presidential assassins, a conspiracy…the only thing this movie is missing is Jack Bauer. (To be fair, co-star Matthew Fox plays a Jack on TV´s "LOST.") Well, let me back up for a minute. "Vantage Point" is missing two things: Bauer and a script which makes us care for any of the characters instead of moving them like chess pieces through the plot, the real star of the show. At a terrorism conference in Spain, the president of the United States is shot. Television cameras capture the attempted assassination. At a terrorism conference in Spain, the president of the United States is shot. A group of assassins put a plot into motion. At a terrorism conference in Spain, the president of the United States is shot. A vacationer captures footage on a video camera. At a terrorism conference in Spain…oh hell, you get the idea. The above events are told from variou ... " [More]

"This film has a good concept, interesting characters, and pretty sweet action scenes. The problem with them is that none of them are developed past the point of impact. The concept is drowned in meaningless repetition, the characters never develop past their own prejudices, and the action sequences can barely make you want to keep watching the screen. Not to mention crossing the 180 degree line all the freakin' time! Forrest Whitaker is always a joy to watch perform, but the dialogue feels extremely forced. William Hurt is surprisingly not that convincing as the President, and Dennis Quaid never really grabs you. Over all, this is one incredibly forgettable film, that could have been so much better. Too bad the director was too interesting in making the action sequences look cool, and forgot to develop a story. " [More]

"Vantage Point starts with a bang and delivers fairly through the first half of its running. However, after the initial cool factor wears off of the different view points from the same story, you are left with a lackluster thriller that fails to make any type of impact with its audience. I have some key concerns with the story arc of the movie, and although I applaud the plot device used for progressing the twists and turns any thriller delivers, it doesn't make up for the bland and flawed narrative. Let me argue for one second from the believability standpoint of the movies climax. Warning: this borders on potential spoilers, so if you have not watched this, you may not want to read any farther. If I am a villain who is a known assassin/terrorist, and through this narrative I am willing to kill 1,000’s of innocent lives to accomplish my goals, there is no damn way I am going to swerve out of the way of one stupid little girl who wanders onto the road, especially when I ha ... "Man, some of the car chase sequences in this film are bone-crunchingly realistic. And there's a fairly brutal sequence of events with an assassin who takes out a bunch of Secret Service guys. And that's about as much compliment as I can dole out to this somewhat laughable thriller/action/Lost-wanna be. The acting by the cast is top notch, but they're working with a script that, when all is said and done, ends up being incredibly pedestrian and gimmicky. I've noticed lately that Dennis Quaid films offer a nice distraction from your day, but leave no real deep impression (unlike, say, American Beauty or No Country For Old Men). In that regard, this film will fit nicely into his repertoire of films such as Frequency or In Good Company. Definitely a rental. " [More]

"Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts over at the Washington Post are reporting that the Washington premiere of Lions for Lambs was a veritable who's who of Hollywood and DC insiders. In addition to stars Robert Redford, Tom Cruise, and his wife Katie Holmes, DC insiders in attendance included "Dan Snyder, Madeleine Albright, Ted Leonsis, Lynda carter, George Stephanopoulos, David Gregory and a bunch of congressfolk..." events I'm very much looking forward to "Lions for Lambs" and am intrigued by the way Hollywood is interfacing with (and portraying) a post-9/11 world. For many years following the attacks, references to 9/11 or to terrorism were simply not allowed and did not appear in mainstream US cinema. The past couple of years (particularly since the release of World Trade Center and United 93) have seen a growing interest in film that is critical of US foreign policy in the Middle East, and the war on terrorism. My theory on this, and please tell ... " [More]
