Directed by Julian Jarrold.
Events from the life of the author Jane Austen inspired this romantic historical drama, which speculates of a romance that may have had a significant impact on her life and work. Twenty-year-old Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) is the daughter of Rev. Austen (James Cromwell), a minister who looks after a flock in a small rural community in Southern England with his wife (Julie Walters). While her older sister, Cassandra (Anna Maxwell Martin), is engaged to be married, Jane resists her family's efforts to match her up with Mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox), the wealthy but dull nephew of Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith), a minor member of the British nobility. Jane has the heart of an artist, and hopes to distinguish herself as a musician or a writer, though her parents don't think much of her prospects. When Jane meets Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy), a young man her own age, she's intrigued; while he scoffs at her writing style, he clearly sees she has talent, and is eager for her to learn more of the larger world by exposing her to more daring literature and modern pastimes such as boxing. As Tom begins to court Jane, she finds herself increasingly attracted to this poor but keenly intelligent man, though she soon realizes her own ideas about love and marriage are sometimes at odds with the conventions of the society in which she lives. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Formulaic period piece movie. The dancing scene that is accompanied by a verbal tete a tete is a little played out now... Poor girl, should she marry for love or money. Blah, blah, blah. " [More]

"Men - don't let your women bring this home for you to watch.Women - if you love your men, don't bring this home for them to watch. Keep this DVD on the shelves at Blockbuster and reduce the nation's divorce rate.Becoming Jane is painfully slow, not terribly interesting, and sloppily written. Since next to nothing is known about Austen's life, some genius thought that Jane Austen's life must have been a combination of her novels. So we, the movie viewing community get conned into this. I'm not an Austen hater -- Pride and Prejudice is very good (movie and TV mini versions) and I didn't mind Emma either. Here's an example of the sloppy story, which makes you unsure of how to judge the characters: Jane is furious at a boy who leaves her to take care of his family... later he comes back to her, they're both happy, then she leaves him because it's best for her family. Both times we're supposed to side with Jane. Come on. Consistency ... " [More]

"After seeing the latest in the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard, I wanted to revisit the old movies to remember how it all began and if they were still good. As I watched, I came to the realization that the original Die Hard is the quintessential action movie. When we first meet Bruce Willis ("Planet Terror")'s John McClane, he's struggling with his marriage and his job. He's not a super hero. He just gets caught up in some extraordinary circumstances and does his best to save his wife and be a cop at the same time. Sure, he manages to pull off some amazing stunts, but Willis is easy to identify with. We feel that, maybe, if we were in the same situation, we could do it, too.And Alan Rickman ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") always plays a good bad guy. In this script, he's smart. A well matched adversary to Willis' cop. Plus, there's comedy. Not too much, but just enough wise-cracking to cut the tension between the dramatic stunts. Just ... " [More]
