Filmmakers Chris Bradley and Kyle LaBrache co-directed this film that exists somewhere between an improvisational mockumentary and an actual documentary. Starring Jeff Goldblum as himself, the film follows the actor's attempts to put on a production of The Music Man in the titular town. The play really happened, but how much is real and how much is just deadpan comedy remains for the audience to discern. Goldblum's friends Illeanna Douglas and Ed Begley Jr. co-star as themselves. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

"Pittsburgh, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006 before going straight to cable and DVD this year, is a mock documentary about Jeff Goldblum’s run starring in a production of The Music Man in his hometown. Some of the film is “real”; some of it is sketched to look real, ala Christopher Guest; some of it uses “real” situations, Borat-style, as the backdrop for improvisation. A stagehand captured in some of the latter antics is now suing to have her scene removed from the film. Debbie Sue Croyle says she was never asked to sign a release, and in fact only learned of the film after it premiered on cable and “other people saw it and told her about it.” She says she is “humiliated” by her appearance in the film, because Goldblum used a double entendre in the scene in which she appears. But oddly, the actor is not named in suit: Croyle is suing the production companies that made the film, the film’s directors, and the Starz cable channel, for $4 million. Seems like a huge ... "Apparently there's a "huge trend" in outdoor movie viewing equipment, while some of us are still trying to catch up (ie: save up) for a proper indoor setup. The appeal of watching movies outdoors is kind of odd, when you think about it--the great outdoors really doesn't provide the ideal movie-watching conditions. But the appeal is also very real. A big part of the appeal is driven by nostalgia, especially if you grew up in the 70s going to drive-in movie theaters with your parents, who didn't have the money to hire a sitter. My brother and I would wear our pajamas, eat some home-popped popcorn out of a paper grocery sack, then fall asleep in the back of the station wagon while our parents had their "date." I still love that image in my head of all those cars lined up in a field, facing a huge screen. There's also something novel about watching movies outdoors, especially now, when drive-in theaters are few and far between. Watching a movie outside with a bunch of people is some ... " [More]

"Oh gang, run see this down in Saugatuck this weekend, Waterfront Film Festival. One reason is: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm000 0156/ You know? Yummy. I'll see anything with Goldblum in it, of course. And Jeff Goldblum on a big inflatable screen, beer, good friends. And Pittsburgh. I loved this film for lots and lots of reasons, and have just one niggle. This is a fun kind of film, where actors play themselves, they poke fun at their profession, at their egos, at the machine that makes them and which controls them. Fun stuff. I like these movies. And I like this one best, because it's just juicy with all the foibles, ego lashings, and dangers that we all endure as we fall in love and age. Goldblum's poor ego is buffeted and stroked, buffeted and stroked. It's a bit S&M, but the tension stays good and taut all the way through. And so funny. Ed Begley's role and story in this are itchy desperate perfect, and the Illeana Douglas/Moby story is so full of that kind of empty wrongness ... " [More]
JennJenn Film Fest in Saugatuck this wee ...

"Opening night of the Waterfront Film Festival was a treat with the music of Emerson Hart and a beer garden on the shores of the Kalamazoo River in downtown Saugatuck, Michigan. Meeting up with close friends, reuniting with volunteers from the last festival, and meeting our film guests made for a great evening. Capping it off was the free screening of Jeff Goldbloom's, Pittsburgh in the middle of Water Street on a blow-up screen. While I was distracted still laughing with friends and watching the scene, the movie made me laugh several times and sympathize with Jeff, playing himself. It wasn't a typical drama, as the actors mostly played, well, themselves. There was a lot narration of their thoughts and a musical inside this film as well as a tragic love story playing behind the scenes. The festival runs through Sunday with many great films and parties starting at 9am 'till 1am. Tonight there is a party at the Dune's Bar in Douglas following a special screening there. Sunday ...
