Directed by Karen Moncrieff.
Karen Moncrieff, the Independent Spirit-award nominated director of Blue Car, assembles a stellar cast comprised of Toni Collette, James Franco, Giovanni Ribisi, and Mary Beth Hurt to tell the tale of one girl's mysterious death, and how the tragic actions of the people who surround her eventually led to her savage murder. When the brutalized and lifeless body of a once vital young girl (Brittany Murphy) is discovered, a community is scarred by the unspeakable horror of seeing one of their own so viciously desecrated. But the discovery of the body is just the beginning of the story, and now as a wife uncovers her husband's dark secret, a mother searches frantically for her missing daughter, and a series of other, seemingly unrelated occurrences slowly begin to converge, the heartbreaking truth behind a tragic act of violence will shake the very foundation of a once close-knit community. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"i have a wonderful picture of all my movie ticket stubs from this year in a pile but i can’t get it transferred to my filmblog (yes, i save my ticket stubs and scrapbook them at the end of the year…i know, it’s sad really)! armed with discount movie coupons, i saw 118 movies this year at the theater and, as usual, it was really hard to narrow them down but here’s my list, for what it’s worth. some are from 2006 that i didn’t see until later. my 15 favorite movies at the theater in 2007the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert fordthe diving bell and the butterflythe lives of othersjunothe painted veilonceno country for old menthe darjeeling limitedwaitressstarting out in the eveningsunshinefirst snow zodiacin the shadow of the moonacross the universehonorable mention (alphabetically)2 days in paris 3:10 to yuma51 birch streetdirty dancing (20th anniversary)dreamgirlshairspra yinto the wildthe jane austen book clubkiller of sheepknock ... "and that sir, was the pisser! NONE, no director's commentary. Every chance I get, I watch the films again, almost immediately after but this go around with the commentary...more times than not, absolutely fascinating. ( I suppose that is a subject for another discussion thread, which films have the most worthwhile commentaries and special features; some of Miike's, Audition and Karen Moncrieff's The Dead Girl, although very different, for a couple, are worth a look or two)Yes raining fish, and then later raining chucks of concrete or rocks or boulders. This, apparently was his first film, which given the final result, leaves me slack jawed. How did he sell it??? I will check out some of the recent films to see if there are commentaries. I just saw Palookaville and loved that thing; maybe it is just because I enjoy watching Vincent Gallo, but all the actors and their characters were just this weirdly great " [More]

"The Dead Girl is seriously depressing. The film follows several different people as clues are revealed about a body found in a local orchard. In each vignette, the characters are sad and often seem unable to break out of their miserable existence. The acting is all strong, especially Rose Byrne ("28 Weeks Later") who is just a really good crier. I liked the look of the film, very dark. I also liked the ending. Everything's not all wrapped up neatly. Instead you're left with many things to think about and how this one body could affect so many lives. " [More]

"Totally disagree with zackmulcahy. This is an extraordinary film with a novel and surprising take on an old film trope - the discovery and impact of a murder. Here rather than focusing on the police investigation or the psychology of the killer, we have a nuanced, thoughtful and moving set of stories each of which concentrates on a different person involved in the case. Four of the stories explore the impact of the crime on four different people connected with the body or the victim: the woman who finds the body, the sister of a woman who disappeared 15 years before and who may be the victim, the wife of the murderer gradually realising what he is doing, and the mother of the victim trying to come to terms with her runaway daughter's short and tragic life. The fifth and last story goes back in time to fill out the victim's story in the day before she dies. Each could have been a short film, they are beautifully self-contained, but work together as a whole to paint a pictur ... " [More]

"Well acted, but underdeveloped, the story lines start out strong but become faded with time. "The Dead Girl" is an utterly disappointing follow-up to the director's debut (and brilliant) "Blue Car," and continues the long line of 2006's cliche arthouse films. The screenplay is Sundance-gone-bad, filled with empty dialogue that falls flat even in the midst of brilliant performances by Toni Collette and Mary Beth Hurt. Franco and Harden pull their weight, but Murphy and Ribisi are wholly unbelievable. All in all, the film is caught between the world of the art film and the Hollywood thriller and never fully satisfies the qualifications of either, leaving audiences in both circles wanting more. "This movie is kinda like 5 movies in one. It's split into 5 chapters (Stranger, Sister, Wife, Mother, Dead Girl) with each chapter detailing how certain people were affected by the death of a girl. The performances were outstanding and the film held my interest throughout. I just saw it last night and now I kinda want to watch it again. " [More]
