Directed by Woody Allen.
Both laughs and thrills are on the masthead in this comedy drama about a would-be reporter written and directed by Woody Allen. Sondra Pransky (Scarlett Johansson) is an American journalism student who travels to England to visit friends. While in London, she attends a magic show where magician Sid "Splendini" Waterman (Woody Allen) brings her on-stage as part of a trick in which he makes her disappear. However, while waiting to be "de-materialized," she's visited by the ghost of a murdered reporter (Ian McShane), who passes along the scoop of the decade. The spirit claims that Peter Lyman (Hugh Jackman), the wealthy and handsome son of a well-known aristocrat, is leading a double life as "the Tarot Card Killer," a serial murderer who has been terrifying the nation and eluding police. With the magician's help, Jane begins investigating the story and is able to piece together some incriminating evidence against Lyman. However, the more she learns, the more dangerous her investigation becomes -- especially when she falls into a romance with the suspected killer. Scoop was Woody Allen's second consecutive film with leading lady Scarlett Johansson, after the critically acclaimed Match Point; it was also Allen's second feature to be shot in Great Britain. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Out of all the films in the director's cannon, Scoop is probably the closests to being the most typical. Aside from the fact that it is set in the UK instead of New York, it is has all of the elements we associate with Woody Allen, pro and con, funny jokes, not-so-funny jokes, a film with some scructural problems, metaphysical issues, strong performances, a somewhat predicatable plot. The movie takes a while to get to the main story. Famed London Observer reporter Joe Strombel (Ian McShane) is dead- of natural causes. While boating to his final destination on the River Styx, he gets a tip to the real identity of the Tarot Card Killer, a serial killer that is keeping the city in fright. He manages to communicate with journalsim student Sondra Pransky (Scarlett Johanson) while she is taking part in Sidney Waterman's (Allen) magic act. The two team up to try to prove that aristocrat Peter Lymon (Hugh Jackman) is the killer- but unfortanley, Sondra begins to fall for who may be a ... " [More]

"SCOOP**1/2PG-13 for some sexual content1 hr. 36 min.written by: Woody Allenproduced by: Letty Aronson & Gareth Wileydirected by: Woody AllenThere may be some folks out there who find it rather odd that I am a film enthusiast and have never really gotten into a whole lot of Woody Allen films. Maybe cuz at the height of his comical zeitgeist, my age ranged between the ages of five and fifteen....not the best age range for the romantic dramas, comedies, and murder mysteries for which he would come to be famous for. Yeah, my concern was more for wookies and nerf herders at the time than whether or not men and woman can be platonic friends. I've never even seen "Annie Hall", the classic that beat out "Star Wars" for Best Picture (if ya can believe that!) at the Oscars back in 1978. For a while, it just seemed to me like Woody Allen movies received heaps of praise all the time and it got old.I find Allen's acting entirely one-dimensional and borderline grating. Always with th ... " [More]

"I watched Scoop with my wife and her best friend at home the other weekend. I wasn't expecting much and got less than that. While Hugh Jackman was kind of charming and Miss Scarlett was gorgeous, the whole thing was souless and empty. Woody Allen has missed the mark before, but this was just the work of a man killing time in London, looking for an excuse to spend more time with his current favourite actress. Match Point was a return to form for Woody Allen. It was well-acted and had thought behind it. Scoop has neither of those things. There is also no sense of place in this movie. Perhaps Woody Allen should stop trying to entertain himself so much and try entertaining his loyal audience. " [More]

"I haven't seen many Woody Allen films, but I'm pretty sure he's played the exact same person in everything I've seen him in. He annoyed the crap out of me in Scoop. He's just not that funny or fresh. There is some wit to be found, but you've got to be paying attention -- and that's no easy task.My real beef with the story was that there were only 2 possible outcomes, and neither one was going to be particularly entertaining. Turns out I was wrong... sort of. The final reveal was a twist of one of the 2 possibilities. Meh.Skip this DVD. " [More]

"What is it about Woody Allen that prevents him for watching his films and possibly seeing what is so apparent to the rest of the world? You know, that he's just getting creepier and creepier when he insists on being in FRONT of the camera as well as behind it. I thought I'd never say he's ruining his films, but he is. Hey, Woody, loved you in the 70's and 80's, but when you stand next to young nubiles such as Johansson and Jackman, it's like we took a left at Yikesville! Remember "Match Point" and how really, really good it was? It's because you weren't in it! Duh! Oh, yeah, and stop putting other actors in your persona (i.e., Will Ferrell?) Run, Run, Run from this movie and then take a good hot shower to remove any of its remains. " [More]

Woody Allen's Scoop is familiar in the best sense of the word. A return to comedy after having his biggest success in quite some time with the drama Match Point, this comedy finds the director falling back on many elements and themes familiar to those with an affection for his work. He uses magic, a topic that the real Allen has always been interested in, and his obsession with the afterlife in order to create his most appealing comedy in almost a decade. Allen's on-screen persona has become little more than a collection of tics, but that is not to say he doesn't know how to use that persona for great comic effect. In this film his third-rate magician's endless stage patter, a patois he maintains even when not on-stage, allows him to poke fun at show business insincerity in a number of funny ways. Scarlet Johanssan does a fine job with her line readings managing to make Allen's signature dialogue her own while still respecting the familiar timing. Solid performances by Ian McShane and Hugh Jackman help keep the film humming along, and Allen cooks up a dozen or so one-liners that are worthy of his reputation. While none of this will win over those who don't care for Allen, fans will warm easily to this enjoyably silly enterprise. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
