Directed by Zackary Adler.
Reed Fish (Jay Baruchel of Million Dollar Baby and Undeclared) seems to be leading the life he's supposed to. He's followed in the footsteps of his late father, doing an early-morning radio show with the town's mayor, Maureen (Katey Sagal), through which the eccentric locals of Mud Meadows voice their complaints and have them addressed. He produces the show with his old high school buddy, Frank (Victor Rasuk), and he's engaged to be married to another high school chum, the gorgeous Kate Peterson (Alexis Bledel), whose dad (Blake Clark) seems to own every business in town. But Reed's plans are upended when his high school sweetheart, Jill (Schuyler Fisk), comes back to town. She's supposed to be away at law school, but she confides to Reed that she quit school years ago, and has been working as a waitress while she fruitlessly pursues a career in music. Reed encourages her to play on Open Mike Night at the local bar. He inspires her to find her voice, which leads to some complications in his relationship with Kate, forcing Reed to reexamine every aspect of his safe, secure life. I'm Reed Fish also features performances by DJ Qualls, Chris Parnell, and Shiri Appleby. The comedy marks the feature debut of director Zackary Adler, and had its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

"1) Earth is really only understood through its small towns, thus I'm Reed Fish introduces the Aliens not only to the mindset of small towns, but to the function and purpose of movies in general. 2) La Dolce Vita then gives them an artful, European, and somewhat historical yet modern perspective of the trivial pursuits of mankind and the emotional toll they take on us. 3) Blade Runner is a required viewing to understand how humanity's mind has evolved into postmodern thought. It is the perfect illustration for us being tools of our tools, failing to believe in the promise of modernism that La Dolce Vita illustrates, living in the remains of society, lack of an absolute truth, etc. 4) Minority Report is our most accurate depiction of what we believe our world will be like in 25 to 50 years time. How we think the world will be reveals a whole lot about what we think our current world is. 5) Finally, these aliens would need to see a little something about our beautiful dependency ... " [More]

"It's a heart warming film. Very cute, but something that I liked most about it was Schuyler Fisk's singing. She's very talented and the song that she sings in this film is one of the best. This movie has a great cast and it's short so if you have a couple hours you should check it out. " [More]

"I haven't seen the movie. Sorry to all those looking for a hard and fast review. But I did meet Reed Fish, no really, I did. If the movie is anything like the man and his friends it should be quite entertaining. Plus the story behind the playwriter and production is classic Hollywood. Hope to see this movie released so I can see it! " [More]

lost interest.
I'm Reed Fish is a reasonably engaging romantic comedy, featuring endearing performances from its young leads. Jay Baruchel, as Reed, utilizes the same goofy gawkiness that made his work on Undeclared such a pleasure, while Schuyler Fisk exudes a refreshing guilelessness as "the other woman" in his life, and she pulls off a convincing musical number, to boot. The supporting cast is equally fine. These are enjoyable people to spend time with, and that helps give the sense that Mud Meadows is a friendly community, despite the presence of a few cranks. The story putters along amiably enough until its sneaky film-within-a-film framework reveals itself. Once the cleverness of that moment subsides, the film snags on its malnourished framing story. The film-within-a-film conceit actually detracts from the main story, and more cynical viewers might see it as a cynical way to throw a little crafty but wholly unnecessary ingenuity into an otherwise routine if well-executed small-town romantic comedy. In the film, the "fictional" part of the story is presented as a bit of a ruse, but ironically it's the making-a-movie-about-making-a-movie aspect that comes across as somewhat weak and contrived. I'm Reed Fish demonstrates a lot of talent, but it's another case of a neophyte filmmaker not recognizing where his true strengths lie, and feeling the need to embellish a perfectly charming first feature with distracting whistles and bells. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
