Directed by Adam Green.
A handful of college students looking for a good time are thrown into a world of danger in this homage to the slasher film cycle of the 1970s and '80s. Ben (Joel David Moore) has just been given his walking papers by his girlfriend and is deeply depressed. Needing a pick-me-up, Ben and his friend Marcus (Deon Richmond) head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and take in a "Haunted Swamp Tour," with master of ceremonies Shawn (Parry Shen) guiding guests through a spooky patch of bayou country. Along the way, Ben and Marcus meet a pair of half-bright exotic dancers, Misty (Mercedes McNab) and Jenna (Joleigh Fioreavanti), as well as Marybeth (Tamara Feldman), a pretty girl who is secretive about her past. As they tour the swamp, Shawn tells his customers about the local legend of Victor Crowley, a deformed man who was taunted by the other children living near the swamp until he was nearly bludgeoned with an axe by his father while trying to open the door of their burning shack. While Ben and Marcus don't think much of the story at first, it doesn't take long before they have serious reason to believe Victor Crowley is still at large -- and is looking to settle some old scores. Hatchet received its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Yes, I saw the previews for Behind the Mask and put it on my Netflix Queue and it did have Robert Englund in it. It looks pretty good. I haven't heard of the Tripper, I'm going to have to check that out too. I agree, comedy and horror together are a great mix. The Gore in this movie was Extreme but it was the kind where I put my hands over my eyes and had to peek out and laugh. I loved how he killed the older woman tourist (okay I know that sounds sadistic when I say I LOVED how he killed the woman but I had never seen that in a movie before...YUK). " [More]

"I enjoyed Hatchet as well. I'd gotten away from recent horror because of all the sadistic, torture crap that's been coming out the past few years, but movies like Hatchet, The Tripper and Behind the Mask have brought me back. I love some laughs with my splatter. If I remember correctly, old Robert Englund was in Behind the Mask as well. I haven't watched Hatchet's commentary yet, but I'd like to think it was purposely tongue in cheek, otherwise it comes up a little short. Either way it was a fun movie. " [More]

"I know I've already written something about this movie in the Horror Movies 101 group, but I thought I'd write a little more about it. Although it was the typical slasher movie and got really disgusting and horribly bloody at times, there were also some really funny times in this movie. I REALLY liked Deon Richmond, he had also played the token black guy in Not another Teen Movie (which was pretty cute) and he was hilarious in that so he really brought a few really good laughs as well as the Cajun Asian guy (Parry Shen) who takes them on the "Haunted Swamp Tour" he was really funny. All in all it was a typical slasher film, you know they shoot him or impale him and he just keeps coming back over and over. It always amazes me too that the stupid idiot tourists think that he is dead each time they kill him. Won't they ever learn? Also had a few short appearnces by Robert Englund and Tony Todd (Candyman). I think it was definately worth a watch! " [More]

"Has anyone seen the movie Hatchet? I had just gotten it on Netflix because I saw the preview for it and brought it over to a friends house to watch. Whew, it was really gorey but it was pretty good too. Robert Englund is in the first part of it and it is pretty entertaining. One of the more interesting things about this movie is the young director and his story of how Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister inspired him, not in the horror sense, but the life in general sense. Anyway, it is pretty gorey, it's set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, so yes, Gor, there are plenty of boobs everywhere, no sex though. It also had some good humor in it, plus horror, two of my favorite combinations in movies. Has anyone else seen it? " [More]

"Lately I've had more time to watch movies than I have had to write about them. Actually, that statement is a bit misleading, because any time I'm watching a movie I could be writing instead, but forgive me, I recently got cable for the first time in about 20 years, so I've been overwhelmed lately by so many viewing options. Some of the movies inspire a few random thoughts, but sometimes not enough to warrant a full review. So here goes, my first weekly roundup of the movies I've seen, but don't think I can stretch a full post out of. A little disclaimer; these weren't ALL within the past seven days, lest you think I've done nothing but sit on my couch 24 hours a day. I'm being a bit lenient in my first post so I can clean out the backlog.Justice League: The New FrontierI haven't read the graphic novel this is based on, but seeing how closely the animation follows the stylistic illustrations of artist Darwyn Cooke, I'm going to assume it's ...
