Directed by Russell Mulcahy.
Director Russell Mulcahy takes over for the third and final chapter in the Resident Evil film trilogy that finds genetically altered Alice (Milla Jovovich) joining forces with Carlos (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps) to take down the Umbrella Corporation once and for all. Upon emerging from her hideout in the Nevada desert, Alice is quickly joined by old friends Carlos and L.J., as well as survivors Claire (Ali Larter), K-Mart (Spencer Locke), and Nurse Betty (Ashanti). Now instilled with super-human strength, senses, and dexterity as a result of the biogenetic experimentation conducted on her by the Umbrella Corporation, Alice and the rest of the survivors set out to eliminate a virus that threatens to turn every living human undead, and ensure that the mysterious organization pays the price for their horrific crimes against humanity. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Okay so I know that this is probably a stupid thread but I'm going to do it anyway! I don't know about you, but I think Zombified Animals are way scary...maybe even more so than Zombified Humans. I know that there are zombie dogs in Resident Evil. And there's also a zombie dog in Night of the Creeps, though I'm not sure if this qualifies as a zombie movie or not. Oh oh! And, though I didn't much care for the movie, Resident Evil: Extinction had some zombie birds. Wouldn't that suck. Not only is Petey obnoxious and tweets nonstop but he's also dead and will bite your ankles off if he gets out of his cage...sucky. That kind of brings about a whole 'nother set of problems when thinking about the movie The Birds. Eep! " [More]

"The movie was everything I expected of it: entertaining and bloody with cool action scenes. The cinema was almost sold out and the audience participated vividly, clapping and encouraging during cool scenes. The only thing that shocked me at this movie was a 4-year old boy who was in his stroller in the aisle, accompanying his parents (the film was R-rated!). " [More]

"i'll go see almost anything at the cheap, last run theaters. So going into this film, and having seen the others, I knew what to expect. Still, I was hopeful that the Mad Max backdrop could add some level or visual flare and maybe, just maybe, it would turn out to be a fun action-horror piece. Boy was I wrong. The film is dreadful. Although the computer effects are better than in the series' past, Extinction can't get over the legacy of whats come before. The zombies are even lacklustre. Oh well, I have my fingers crosees for Cloverfield. " [More]

"I don't know... 4 or 5 out of 10, I guess. 20 minutes into this, I began to regret my impulse to queue up RE: Apocalypse after watching RE for the first time. It felt too much like a made-for-TV action flick. Not a low budget "we're being creative with limited funds" flick. A "we're cutting corners and using leftover tricks" sort of flick. But I didn't *not* like it. And now I feel obligated to catch the 2007 RE: Extinction that I didn't even know existed. I just watched the trailer (thank you, Spout) and I liked what I saw... filling that gotta-have-my-cheeseball-actio n/horror craving. Here's my beef with Apocalypse -- as the plot unfolded, it felt too much like an Alien Resurrection rehash. Heroine is made almost perfect and shares some sort of deep bond with the enemy. Sounds familiar, right? " [More]

"Time to play some catch-upI heard many bad things about Bug, but I think that's because it was marketed as a flesh-eating virus horror movie. It's really more of a psychological thriller. Based on a play, almost all of the action takes place in a hotel room. Director William Friedkin ("The Hunted") manages to keep the tension up, despite the lack of scenery change. Ashley Judd ("Come Early Morning") stars as a desperate and lonely woman who falls for a possibly crazy veteran (Michael Shannon, "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead"). He thinks there's a bug infestation in the hotel room. And the crazy spirals from there. Judd and Shannon really give themselves over to their roles. And the film might not have worked as well otherwise. I was caught up in this from minute one.Despite it's very cool poster and the lovely Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Suburban Girl"), The Return is a mess. The premise is good. Gellar has these visions o ... "I actually went to the theatre for this one...endured the mob of teens and tweens hooking up with their friends via text message until they all found their seats...ack! I was ready for some video-game-esque action - or so I thought - and found myself totally jumping out of my seat with all the flesh-eating gore... my husband got more entertainment out of watching me jump than the movie, I think. God, I'm so embarrassed......and I have a little girl-crush on Milla...again...<sigh> " [More]

By the time film franchises make it to a third entry, it usually either marks the end of the franchise or a depressing grab at what made the original films so special in the first place -- and then there's Resident Evil: Extinction. Not only have the filmmakers turned the series' premise on its head with the post-apocalyptic setting, but they've gone out of their way to further complicate the story -- even so far as demanding a continuation at its head-scratching finale. All of this would make more sense if the quality of the films demanded it, though if anything, the series has lagged in quality rather than becoming more focused by learning what worked before. While not nearly as outrageous as the action overload of the second film, the third settles into somewhat of a more serious tone as the original, except this time, it's all presented in a ho-hum fashion, thanks in part to Russell Mulcahy's glossy, but largely geriatric direction. As to what his lensing is missing -- for one, the scares that are there just don't work, which would be okay if the action were amped up to realize the pic's full potential. While Extinction evokes a distinct Road Warrior feel, there's nary a time that it delivers on that level of excitement, despite its obvious throwback nature in terms of visuals and stunts. On the plus side, Milla Jovovich still delivers a tough cookie performance that proves she still lives up to her action starlet status, with her acrobatics being some of the most impressive feats of the film (though what's with the digital smoothing they obviously threw on her face in the close-ups). Questionably aided dermatology aside, the flick gets points for expanding upon its own mythology while still throwing in a few nods to the gaming crowd -- it's just too bad that they couldn't have spiced up the recipe a bit more so that the onscreen action met the lofty ambitions of the script. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
