Adapted from the bestselling novel, the whimsical, heartwarming comedy The Nanny Diaries concerns Annie Braddock (Scarlett Johansson), a recent college graduate from New Jersey whose nurse mother makes an unsuccessful bid to pressure her into a white-collared business career. Sidetracking this path for more colorful pursuits, Annie accepts a position as nanny and domestic servant for a wealthy couple on the upper east side of Manhattan, known only as "The Xs" (Paul Giamatti) and a heavily coiffed and accoutred Laura Linney). Annie has her first real taste of servant life when she arrives at the family's residence and promptly sinks into Mrs. X's luxury tub, but is soon shuttled off to her own bare-bones room. Face to face, for the first time in her life, with the vast socioeconomic differences between herself and others, Annie must spend her days catering to Mrs. X's every whim, navigating the emotional landmines set by the domineering Mr. X, and tending to the demands of the couple's mischievous and bratty son, Grayer (Nicholas Art). The situation grows a bit more awkward and sticky when Annie begins to fall for a young man who lives near the Xs, whom she's nicknamed Harvard Hottie (Chris Evans), leading her to seriously reevaluate her career goals and priorities. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

"I left the following comment on csprague's filmblog about The Nanny Diaries, in which she wrote "The love story was a side note, or at least it seemed that way since it was so underdeveloped." I have to agree with you. I can't help but think that the relationship between Annie and "Harvard Hottie"/Hayden should have been more than a side story, especially given the film's conclusion. But a more intense courtship would not have fit with the overall motif of the film. Instead of striking a good balance, the love story is awkward and out-of-place. " [More]

"It was more of a female, coming-of-age, I-don't-know-who-I-am kind of story than a romantic comedy. The love story was a side note, or at least it seemed that way since it was so underdeveloped. I really liked Laura Linny's character, I think she and Paul Giamatti did a great job. They were nerotic and overbearing, easily dispised. But I thought the tension between Johansson and Linny was a bit much. I have a hard time believing Johansson's character didn't snap earlier in the film. I found her capactiy for tolerating Linny's neglegence a bit unbelievable. Over all, I enjoyed it, but it is certainly not one of Johansson's best. " [More]

"Stripper-turned-blogger-turned -Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody has “revised” the script for a new musical called Burlesque. Concieved by Pussycat Dolls co-creator Steven Antin, the musical will incorporate “established songs” into the story of “a young woman who tries to escape a hollow past and finds it performing in a neo-burlesque club in Los Angeles.” So it’s like Flashdance meets Moulin Rouge, with Cody undoubtedly supplying references to Thundercats and “porkswords.” In what The Hollywood Reporter is calling “an industry first”, the upcoming special edition DVD of Live Free or Die Hard will include an extra version of the film specifically for use on computers and mobile devices. The file, which will carry no DRM, will be compatible with all “Windows-based computers or portable video players equipped with Microsoft Windows’ PlaysForSure feature, available from such manufacturers as Archos, Toshiba, Samsung, RCA, Dell and Creative Labs.” So those of us with iPods can suck it. "I thought The Nanny Diaries would be super cute. And I used to really love Scarlett Johansson ("The Prestige"), but ever since The Black Dahlia, I've started to lose confidence. And Nanny Diaries didn't really assuage my doubts. This film follows Johansson as she graduates from college, freaks out about who she is, lies to her mom and takes a job as a nanny for a super rich family. Laura Linney ("Breach") is beautifully neurotic. But you see where the story is going almost from the minute it starts. Johansson doesn't really have any chemistry with Chris Evans ("Sunshine"), though I'm not sure whose fault that is. Still entertaining fluff, but definitely a rental or a Lifetime movie one day.I was mostly drawn to A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints because of my unabashed love for both Robert Downey Jr. ("Zodiac") and Shia LaBeouf ("Transformers")., but it turned out to be a pretty good movie. It's a better than average coming of age story told in flashbacks from t ... " [More]

"There are times when I have to ask if the makers of the movie realized just what exactly are they making. While I do ask that when it’s a new or innovative, it’s usually when I see a movie that skips the track and careens off the edge of the Grand Canyon. Directors Shari Springer Berman and husband Robert Pulcini directed one of the most inventive biopics ever with American Splendor. For their follow-up they take on the soul-sequel to the strange yet trashy The Devil Wears Prada; The Nanny Diaries. And here I am, asking that same darned question again. The Nanny Diaries has the makings of decent movie, new college graduate Annie Braddock (Scarlet Johansson) takes a sidestep in life when she allows herself to become the nanny for an Upper East Side couple (Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti, whom I sense is paying back a favor on this one). The opening of the movie starts off interesting enough; starting off like an anthropology report while we stroll though the Museum of Nat ... " [More]

"We'd like this off our resumes, pleaseThe setting is Manhattan's Upper East Side. A fresh college graduate, eager to put some sort of imprint upon the world but clueless about how to properly do so, takes a job – so easily gotten! -- as a nanny. If she squints really hard, this young woman can see the position being sorta-kinda related to anthropology, the field she eventually wants to enter. She's thrilled. Until she finds out that the exhausting, humiliating, and often just plain impossible mother-child-nanny power struggle she's now engaged in is its own circle of hell. If The Nanny Diaries sounds familiar, it's because you've seen it before – only it was called The Devil Wears Prada, with a fabulous spring collection standing in for the baby that a slave-driving bitch casually bears, then orders an exasperated lackey to kill herself trying to care for it. Oh: And it was also a book, a novelized bit of composite nonfiction by former New York ... " [More]

"Rare is the year that a studio moves up a release date, in order to ensure that their film is "the first Western in the marketplace." But such is the case this fall, as Lionsgate has decided to open James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma a month ahead of schedule, in order to get a jump on the competition (ie: The Coen Brothers' No Country For Old Men, and The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, starring Brad Pitt). But while Lionsgate might have dodged their genre competition, September's an increibly crowded month for "prestige" releases; still, 3:10's biggest competition on that particular weekend will be hardly-fearsome The Nanny Diaries. Spike Lee held another press conference in Italy yesterday, in which he wowed the local journalists with his usual "don't call me mainstream, I'm just here to scout locations for my $45 million film" bon mots. Amongst other revelations, Lee intimated that recent success has hardly made his life in Hollywood any easier. "My last feat ... " [More]
