Two strong-willed women wield their influence on a shy teenaged boy in this coming-of-age comedy from the United Kingdom. Seventeen-year-old Ben (Rupert Grint) is the son of a soft-spoken vicar (Nicholas Farrell), but it's his mother, Laura (Laura Linney), who rules the household, and she has put Ben cheerfully under her thumb, keeping him busy with a variety of good-will errands for the church and numerous local charity causes. With summer vacation looming before him, Ben is looking forward to learning to drive, but Laura is more interested in spending time with one of the more charming members of the church staff than helping Ben learn how to operate the family automobile. Wanting to earn some pocket money, Ben starts looking for a part-time job and ends up working for Evie Walton (Julie Walters), an elderly and slightly eccentric actress who needs help keeping her garden in shape. Laura believes Evie isn't an especially good influence on her son, though Ben is happy to find someone who encourages his interest in poetry and the larger world (especially girls). One day, Evie announces that she needs to ride to Edinburgh, where she is supposed to give a reading as part of the city's massive music and arts festival. While Ben doesn't have his license, he volunteers to take the wheel, and soon he's confronted with various forms of decadence that his mother has frequently warned him to avoid. Driving Lessons received its North American premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"I was a tad sceptical when I saw this advertised. As far as I was concerned, it had the ginger guy from Harry Potter in it. But on the other hand, it looked really good, was getting good reviews and it had Julie Walters in it. So I checked it out and I have to say that I loved it. It is one of my favourite films, one that always manages to make me smile no matter what. I also feel that I have to say that Rupert Grint has more than proved himself to be a good actor in this film, he is now in my opinion, one of the best young English actors that we have produced. He gets brutally underused in the HP films and lets be honest, is a far better actor than Radcliffe, which is reportedly why he was given the role so I suppose that I can't complain because if he was employed to his full potential in those films, he might never have made this. However, having said that, the film is heavily dominated by Julie Walters as would be expected given what a great acting force she is. I t ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Maybe before bizarrely boasting in the New York Times that its country is home to, among other good stuff, “the planet’s largest population of wolves,” the Foreign Ministry of Kazakhstan should have realized this: The intolerant, misogynistic, and backwoods Kazakhstani journalist and the documentary-style film the government is unofficially responding to is fictional. The United States, however, doesn’t have any excuses for some of the very real citizens depicted in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Borat Sagdiyev is the creation of British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen of Da Ali G Show, whose sketches involve Cohen inhabiting one of three ridiculous characters (including Borat) around unsuspecting audiences. The concept is a little Candid Camera, is a bit more of Punk’d, and most closely resembles the non-crotch-crunching skits of Jackass. But Cohen’s Borat is a departure: His ... " [More]

"Haven't seen Order of the Phoenix yet, but did watch Driving Lessons last night. For those interested in seeing the Potter crew in other movies, this one starred Ron Weasley and Mrs. Weasley and they both did fine (in spite of a little Ruppert-Grint snark in the last Filmspotting).I've read two speculations about the look of Order of the Phoenix. On Hot Blog, the thought was that the only way to increase profits with this outing was to hire a British director who would give the film a look that would save $50 million. However, an NPR critic said that the grainier, more subdued look of the film matched the paranoia and teen angst in it. Or something like that. " [More]

"To say Julie Waters steals this movie is an understatement. It shines whenever she is on screen. Laura Linney has been one of my favorites since Barbary Lane, and she plays the very British wife of a priest and a holy roller to boot superbly. Rupert Gint (Ron Weasley in Harry Potter series) is very good as an awkward seventeen year old, browbeaten by his mother, ignored mostly by his father, and shyly breaking in to the real world. But it really is Julie Waters movie, from the time we meet her dropping some serious "F" bombs, until the very end she is terrific. based on the USA rating system I'm suprised it was a PG 13, I thought more than 2 "F" bombs automatically raised you to an "R". But maybe it was the gentile accents. " [More]
