Directed by Antoine Fuqua.
A top Marine sniper who previously abandoned the military after a routine mission gave way to tragedy is double-crossed by the government after reluctantly being pressured back into service in Training Day director Antoine Fuqua's adaptation of Stephen Hunter's novel Point of Impact. There was a time when Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) was the best trigger-man in the military, but after growing disillusioned with the system, he disappeared without a trace. After being located at his remote mountain retreat by high-profile government officials following an extensive search, Swagger is coerced back into service in order to stop a determined assassin from taking out the President of the United States. In the process of carrying out his mission, however, Swagger suddenly realizes that he has been betrayed when he becomes the subject of a nationwide manhunt. Now wounded and desperate to reveal the culprits behind the conspiracy before it's too late, Swagger sets into motion a revenge plan that will send shockwaves rippling to some of the most powerful and corrupt leaders in the free world. Danny Glover, Rhona Mitra, and Ned Beatty co-star in this conspiracy-driven action thriller that asks what it truly means to serve one's country. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Shooter is the kind of movie asks that audience to accept as a bad guy a corrupt senator who laughs and says things like "They actually think America is a democracy!" It is a completely implausible and ridiculous, a two hour episode of MacGyver without the mullet fun. Of course, every thriller, even the very best (Seven, The Silence of the Lambs) is implausible if you really think about it. But in a good thriller, the director is able to make everything so compelling that you don't really notice the plot problems. In Shooter, however, Antoine Fuqua (who must have been made fun of in school over his last name) apparently decided to lower everything so that the dumbest person in the audience could understand exactly what is going on at all times. There are great many surprises in the film, and anyone who has not seen the trailer or will not be able to guess them (I.E. tenth graders and under) should stop reading now. For those who must know, Mark (insert your own joke here) Wahlberg ... " [More]

"SHOOTER***R for strong graphic violence and some language.2 hrs. 6 min.written by: Jonathan Lemkin (screenplay) & Stephen Hunter (novel 'Point of Impact')produced by: Lorenzo Di Bonaventura & Ric Kidneydirected by: Antoine FuquaHere's a well executed movie that feels like when of those solid, well-paced thrillers from the 80's. That's a compliment. It'd be far too easy to dismiss director Antoine Fuqua's film as mindless multiplex mayhem, but that's not the case here. there's a lil bit more to this movie than what you might be expecting. Underneath all the conspiracy and crazy action, there's actually a good degree of jabbing at the current administration. Imagine that! It's not out of context, it definitely fits the feel and story. You have to wonder just how many viewers caught on to the not-so-thinly-veiled caricatures of the government's elite. Watching this film and noticing all this, I had no idea if any political statem ... " [More]

"While highly involved and technically accurate in the area of distance shooting, this film suffers from a trite, hackneyed, predictable story line. Add to that the totally unrealistic combat sequences and the amazing medical recovery of our lead character and his sidekick, and you have Yet Another Mark Wahlburger. Would you like fries with that? It's okay for a late Saturday night viewing, I guess, but don't expect too much. And don't stay up too late. You've got church tomorrow morning. " [More]

"After watching this film for a second time last night, I left with the same feelings I had after the first time I saw it. While the movie is extremely predictable and cliche, that's exactly what its intended audience expects. While watching this film, the viewer can't help but pull for Bobby Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) and feel that it is "us against the world". Wahlberg delivers as the gritty, badass he is supposed to be and as a result the action in the movie is incredible, even if at times unrealistic. If you liked The Fugutive and The Bourne Identity, this is your kind of movie. " [More]

"I wasn't expecting much and I didn't really get much. The story is extremely predictable & way to long. Wahlberg is fine & Glover is horrible like always. It is however an amazing looking film with fantastic shots and color. Not bad, but not at all a great film. " [More]

"Although "Shooter" isn't going to win any awards, it was surprisingly entertaining. This is a standard mindless action/thriller movie, but it is done well. I went into the film with negative expectations, not being a big fan of Marky Mark Walhberg( I much prefer his older brother Donnie). The younger Walhberg acquits himself nicely, it certainly helps that he doesn't have a ton of dialog. The characters are likeable, and it was nice to see Danny Glover in a movie again. The movie is fast paced and keeps your attention. Of course there is a lot of suspension of disbelief, but you will have that with any action movie. If you are not a fan of the action/thriller genre, this is probably not your cup of tea. But if you occasionally enjoy a good blow 'em up shoot 'em up movie there are worse ways to spend 2 hours. Over all I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed watching this movie. " [More]

"Although Shooter was an entertaining film, it was filled with many cliches. The one that stands out most vividly in my mind is the walking in slow motion in front of an american flag. Also there's the obvious, cop who knows the accused is innocent but no one believes him. My mind is hazy but there is also quite a few plotholes in the story as well. I was impressed with Mark Wahlberg's performance though. There's a reason he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor last year. If you're into mainstream action movies, check this out, I'm not so much but it was lying around and i thought 'might as well give it a chance.' You should too. Every film deserves a chance. " [More]

If there's one thing to be learned from Shooter, it's that a fancy gun and a couple long-range feats of accuracy do not a movie make. Continuing to show less promise with each film he's made since Training Day, director Antoine Fuqua nonetheless launches Shooter with a visually arresting opening, in which a pair of snipers are compromised in the Middle East. Jump ahead a couple years, and a grizzled Mark Wahlberg still obliterates soup cans through his sniper's scope at a distance of a mile -- now just a hobby in the snowy woods of Nowhere, USA. But once he and the movie leave that environment, things take a turn for the disastrous. Not only does Shooter cease to be about shooting, but it develops a disturbing vigilante tone that builds toward a bloody denouement, basically destroying the sympathy for Wahlberg's character. Yes, he's framed for attempting to assassinate the president, and yes, that's not nice. But his reaction is so out of scale with the acceptable approach for a hero, it leaves the sour taste of bullet metal in viewers' mouths. The problem undoubtedly lies in Jonathan Lemkin's script, which crucially fails to produce a narrative explanation for the conspiracy that ensnares our poor shooter. As far as Lemkin cared, "some guys wanted to kill somebody for some reason," and knowing that should be enough for some good set pieces. It might have been, if Fuqua had remembered what made him an exciting talent in the first place. Even in the otherwise underwhelming Tears of the Sun and King Arthur, Fuqua maintained his keen sense of what makes for a kinesthetic action sequence. But outside of Shooter's opening, he's forgotten even that. Which makes Shooter just as easy to forget. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
