Directed by Gabor Csupo.
From the producers of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and mind of author Katherine Paterson comes a rousing fantasy adventure about family, friendship, and the wondrous power of imagination. A perpetual outsider both at home and at school, Jess Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) just never seems to fit in no matter how hard he tries. When his goal to become the fastest runner in middle school is unexpectedly thwarted by newly arrived classmate Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb), who enters in an "all boys" race and leaves her competitors in the dust, Jess soon strikes up a friendship with the imaginative outsider. Their bond is soon cemented thanks to Leslie's love for storytelling and Jess' skill as an artist, and the two lonely kids create a secret kingdom called Terabithia that is only accessible by swinging over a stream on a nearby rope. Though Jess and Leslie may be considered outcasts by their classmates, their adventures in Terabithia find the pair doing battle against the dreaded Dark Master and his malevolent creatures while plotting revenge against the schoolyard bullies. Now, thanks to his adventures in Terabithia and his friendship with Leslie, Jess finally finds the confidence needed to stand tall and be himself. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"This film was not what I had expected, and I guess I should have read the book first. My eight year old suggested we put this one on our queue after seeing the trailer when it was realeased to dvd. I wish someone would have warned us not to watch this film so close to my "womanly time" and also not until my son was a bit older so he could understand the need for the tragedy in the film. I had to spend the better part of bedtime explaining why things played out as they did so my son could stop crying and get to sleep. I did enjoy the film though I spent the last half sniffling and putting on a brave face for my son. " [More]

"This movie is about a boy who likes to draw. He meets a new neighbor, a girl who has a big imagination. Together they create this world called Terabithia. What I didn't realize is that this movie is horrible depressing. Its so sad, I don't think children should watch this movie. " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Wonder, inspiration, friendships forged, and lessons learned—in a children’s movie, these positive elements are tough to project without ruining a parent’s lunch. The now-tired approach that Disney and its imitators have taken, of course, is to fill an otherwise syrupy script with rapid-fire pop-culture references that only grown-ups will understand. Wisecracking animals have been popular, too. Really, how else to grab the tykes and entertain the adults if it doesn’t involve Robin Williams and a couple of stealthily racy jokes? Well, see 2005’s excellent Zathura. (No one else did.) And Bridge to Terabithia, a nonmangled interpretation of Katherine Paterson’s 1978 tween novel. Both movies are smart, imaginative, thoughtful, and fun; instead of throwing in a barrage of jokes aimed toward different demographics, Zathura and Terabithia simply ace their “whoa, cool!” factor in a way that makes the more mature audience ... "Bridge to Terabithia marks director Gabor Csupo’s first attempt at a feature-length, live-action film. He seems to have a propensity to animation; he spent the eighties and nineties producing everything from a few episodes of the children’s cartoon Rugrats to the more adult Duckman. So it seems strange that the only real movie he’s ever made is as good as it is. Terabithia stars Josh Hutcherson as Jess, a boy with four sisters and parents who struggle to provide. He deals with the cruel way his middle-school classmates treat him with class and dignity, and releases with his talent for art and the fact that he races faster than any other kid in his grade. Along comes Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb), the new girl, who also seems to have a natural placeholder near the bottom of the social ladder. Together, they bond in the strangest of ways – they imagine a world of magic and trolls and dark wizards. In Terabithia, as their hand-made sign says, nothing can crus ... " [More]

"Bridge to Terabithia is the second film directed by Michael Rabiger, who is best known for creating Rugrats. It could be described as a bittersweet film about the struggles of childhood and the importance of imagination, and it certainly has the right ingredients: Jesse Aarons is a poor farm boy that is constantly bullied at school, but he has a hidden artistic talent which keeps him going through the rough patches. His melancholy is interrupted by the arrival of the new girl, Leslie Burke, who quickly learns her place in the playground pecking order. The two form a friendship, retreating to a fantasy world of their own making. It sounds promising, but this film uncomfortably straddles fantasy and reality, I’m guessing in an attempt to reflect the uneasy transition period between childhood and adulthood. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of imagination is that it does not keep its promise. I am all too familiar with the kind of disappointment that comes from realizing that ... " [More]

"basically, with some minor adjustments.  the first of which would be that the actors/actresses faces reminded me more of a glass of milk that has been left on the table for 47 years.  the plotline was ok, only because they ripped it off from narnia.  the screenplay would have been more origional if it were written by 1000 monkeys in about 13 minutes and 27 seconds.  the acting was reminicent of star wars episode 4, that is chewbaca in episode four. this movie would be better classified as a torture device than a entertaining motion picture. Dealing with subjects of life and death in a story aimed at kids befuddles many storytellers. The best aspect of Gabor Csupo's adaptation of the classic novel Bridge to Terabithia is the very personal, unique way the character responds to the profound events that affect him. Jess Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) is a shy boy, unable to express his frustrations with bullies, his father, and the fact he is forced to wear hand-me-down sneakers from his sister. Only by drawing can he get these feelings out. That is until a new family moves in next door, and soon he has a friend for life in Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb), the daughter of authors who love her but let her spend a great deal of time alone. She can create a story with as much facility as Jess can draw, leading to their creation of Terabithia, a fantasy world where the pair symbolically confront the problems they face in the real world. Csupo manifests this fictional world in the most natural ways, the magical creatures they create in their minds simply appear without any fanfare. These sequences become more and more ornate as the film progresses, but Csupo manages to keep these sequences grounded in an uncomplicated psychological truth. By staying true to these characters' unique personalities, the audience can see them not as symbols but as real people with familiar problems. When fate deals Jess a very painful life lesson in the film's third act, the filmmakers have gotten so far inside the character that the they don't have to overwhelm the viewer with any gaudy emotional excess. For a film that deals with powerful feelings of mourning and grief and guilt, the screenwriters and the director earn profound emotions without magnifying them into melodramatic excess. The viewers experience the pain and catharsis exactly as Jess does. It would be enough that Bridge to Terabithia never talks down to its preteen audience, but it turns out to be something much better because it doesn't talk down to the adults in the audience either. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
