Directed by Walter Becker.
A mismatched group of bored suburbanites longing to escape the stress of their daily lives and embrace the freedom of the open road finds that it takes more than polished chrome and leather jackets to truly experience the biker lifestyle in this revved-up road comedy starring John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, and William H. Macy. Upon trading the comfort of their couches for the thunderous rumble of two-wheeled street machines, these four adventurous riders cross paths with the notorious Del Fuegos -- an authentic biker gang that doesn't take kindly to the weekend warrior type. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"After a second-half career slump, director Rob Reiner has taken great pains to critic-proof his latest film, “The Bucket List.” “I'll pair two of America's best-loved elder actors, give them oddly endearing eccentricities, saddle them with a terminal illness, but show how they learn to LOVE LIFE!!!” he says (exclamation marks are a necessity here). So when a critic attempts to lay into the film for being rote and pandering, he or she will be derided for besmirching the actors' good names and callously drubbing those dealing with cancer.Well, bring on the hate mail. This is “Wild Hogs for the septuagenarian set (“Mild Hogs?” “Terminal Hogs?”), and it is a TV dinner of a film – everything spooned out in carefully measured proportions, pre-packaged and cold, without a hint of spice or surprise. The two ailing leads are a cantankerous old wisecracking coot and a gentle, grounded guru who are both diagnosed with the b ... "If you love motorcycles and have gone through a mid life crisis, then this is a flick for you! It is exactly what I have felt for a while and was able to do.. A biker road trip. Good movie, lots of laughs and the beginning of the movie sets the tone. Casting was incredible and all the stars really played well off of each other. The movie kept my attention through out the entire time and I have watched it about 20 times on DVD. Truly a great movie.2 words.. Marissa Tomei - how can one go wrong? " [More]

"Wow. I just looked at some of the reviews below this and it doesn't look like people are taking too kindly too it. However, I will say that I liked it. It's not a great fim that deals with tough issues or anything like that. It is just a film that I think is perfect to just stick on in the background really. It is a film that I can watch and completely turn off. Every once in a while I like to watch a film that I don't have to really think about and follow, so I watch films like this. They are 'switch off' films to me. Also, this film really has no right to be as tolerable as it is, especially given that it contains John Travolta AND Tim Allen. Considering this, I think the film was pretty good. Though I have to say that I flinched each time one of those bikes got damaged. Makes me shudder just thinking about it " [More]

"I went into the video store which changed it's hours to close an hour earlier than it normally did. The woman behind the counter told me that it was past closing while I was looking. She was very patient, and I didn't want to hold her up. I told her I was looking for a good comedy, and she swore by this movie which was made with a bunch of washed up actors. Will somebody please tell Tim Allen that his Tool Time antics were ok for family prime time viewing, but it's friggin old now! The last time I saw John Travolta in anything good, was.... hmmm.... Welcome Back Kotter. Martin Lawrence? You've seen his character in one movie, you've seen 'em all. If I wanted to watch repeats, I'd watch TV in the summer time. One thing I did find out though. If you ever suffer from insomnia, just shell out a few bucks for this rental, and save your Lunesta money. " [More]

"This movie is a bad version of City Slickers on motorcycles. They're not even learning to ride motorcycles... they already know how... they just go on vacation and run out of gas. And I'm really supposed to buy that two of the characters fall madly in love over the course of approximately 3 hours real people time? "Hey John, why don't we hang out this weekend and act in a lame movie.. just for the fun of it?" "OK Tim... sounds like a blast." That's about as much thought as was apparently put in the screenplay.Oh and I've put this in the "Gay" list because there is one gay character in it... but he's in it for the jokes. Boo. Haven't we grown past that? " [More]

"***Proving that anyone who's ever had a beer with Judd Apatow is going to have no trouble finding work this summer, Freaks and Geeks star John Francis Daley (seen above) has sold a script to New Line called The $40,000 Man. Per Variety, it's about a "legendary astronaut and true American hero who finds himself horribly injured in a car accident and rebuilt by the government to be a bionic man, on a budget of $40,000 -- which makes him not that bionic." ***In other dude-com news, Jack Black and Todd Phillips are teaming up to develop something called Man-Witch for Warner Brothers. The pitch sounds something like School of Rock meets The Craft, but with Jack Black in the Neve Campbell part. Sexy! ***Steve Carell, Daniel Craig, and J.J. Abrams are among the notables who have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for 2007. ***Oh good! A Wild Hogs sequel is on the way! Your dad's half-wit friend will be so pleased. Originally posted on:SpoutBlog " [More]

"I love it when film critics and other journalists and op-ed people get into debates via their articles and columns. A little drama between national media outlets never hurts. Recently, Wall Street Journal movie critic Joe Morgenstern wrote a column in response to an article a few weeks back by Peter Bart, Variety's editor-in-chief. There are some personal digs between the two that I won't bother getting into (they're amusing), but the central question is interesting: Should critics be more in tune with what the masses (Bart calls them the "popcorn crowd") really enjoy seeing at the multiplex? Bart's column started with this: Box office data this year suggests that filmgoers seem to be having a great time at the multiplexes. The critics, by contrast, may be shopping around for a new line of work. He goes on to say that movies like 300, Ghost Rider, Wild Hogs, and Norbit have been slammed by critics but have done very well in the box office. "The situation underscores yet again th ... " [More]

"Hey Johnlinv - yeah, this movie could possibly be good...but again, what you said about the critics, everyone gives it bad reviews. Spill's animated review fleshed out abuot every thought I had on it, and Rotten Tomatoes had an overall score of 19% =/ So - I guess that maybe all of the big names earned it #1 at the box office - also all of the older women who want so see these guys., I guess " [More]

"I haven't seen this movie yet, but with Lawrence, Macy, Travolta, and Allen, how can it miss? There should be some way for Critcs to lose pay when they critic it incorrectly. The first weekend out, it hit no. 1 in the box office. " [More]

"I don't get it. I haven't seen this movie yet, but I'm leery about it. Plus, why the hell is William H. Macy in here? He's an incredible actor, what's he doing in this movie? Anyway - just seems like Hollywood trying to be funny - but - not so much...on the funny part ;) " [More]

There is no sane reason that such a low-brow, scattershot affair as Wild Hogs (2007) should possibly succeed as a comedy. The script is not even certain which character is the protagonist: in act one, it seems to be Tim Allen's Doug, in act two John Travolta's Woody takes over, and in act three the romance between William H. Macy's Dudley and Marisa Tomei's Maggie takes center stage. Only Martin Lawrence as token black pal Bobby is clearly relegated to B-list status. By giving equal time to almost every member of its ensemble cast, the film underutilizes each of them in turn and never fully explores any one of their characters, thus rendering dramatically slack their third-act transformations into better men. Ray Liotta, in the meantime, seems slightly embarrassed by his participation in this cluttered, potty-minded production, although he receives able supporting work from M.C. Gainey and Kevin Durand, a stand-up comic who, along with Macy, does the best work in the film. The humor is pratfall-heavy and rife with gay panic that borders on offensive until it crosses that border and leaves it far, far behind. And for a film about a quartet of buddies coping with their mid-life crises by embarking on a cross-country biker quest, the trip seems geographically truncated by its lengthy detour in the second half into the sort of small-town Nirvana only glimpsed in movies and television shows. Yet, despite all of its obvious and manifold flaws, Wild Hogs is the one thing it really needs to be: funny. The jokes work, dumb as they are, and while to call the story "mild" is an understatement, director Walt Becker clearly understands the thinness of the material he's working with here and maintains a steady, self-mocking tone and nimble pace that serve the picture well, while wringing some real energy and engagement from his sprawling cast. Wild Hogs was a sizeable box office hit, despite a raft of negative reviews, perhaps largely due to the fact that it was exactly the type of movie it seemed to be in its marketing campaign: dumb, likeable, and amusing. Its success is a potent reminder that audiences will forgive much if delivered a sturdy product that delivers the goods it promises. ~ All Movie Guide
