Arnold Schwarzenegger gained his first real notoriety outside body-building circles with this documentary about a group of men training for the Mr. Olympia contest. Arnold had already won the title six times before, and was training for his seventh victory before retiring to fully pursue his acting career (which began to catch fire with his likable turn in Stay Hungry, released the same year) when this was shot. Here he displays an easy charm and wicked sense of humor as he plays mind games with his competitors and explains how getting pumped up for competition always reminded him of sex (which might explain why he seems so cheerful). And what is Arnold smoking in his dressing room after the contest? Future Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno is also on hand, and his fierce determination as he goes through a brutal weight lifting regimen shouting "Arnold! Arnold!" speaks both to his own desire to win and how strong a presence Schwarzenegger was in body-building at the time. You don't have to be a body building fan to enjoy Pumping Iron, though Arnold is the one contestant who shows obvious star quality. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Are you a supporter of gay marriage? “I know nothing about it. I don’t follow that.” Why doesn’t it interest you? “The same reason heterosexual marriage doesn’t seem to interest me.” –From Questions for Gore Vidal in The New York Times Magazine, 6/15/08. Amen, sister. One of the perks of being queer is that you’re not expected to engage in unnatural acts like high school proms and monogamy. So in honor of the hedonistic right to our own guilt-free, queer Mardi Gras, here are some subversive suggestions that will get you in the mood and take you back to that more innocent, less commercial “Over The Rainbow” time. For vintage gay porn nothing beats George Butler’s Pumping Iron (1977) – and not just because the governor of California unapologetically indulges in a big fat phallic joint straight to the camera. Ostensibly a smackdown between pre-Governator Schwarzenegger and pre-Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno, captured in a pre-reality show documentary about the pro-bodybuilding path ... " [More]

"This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”. To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.Pumping IronAs is the case with many behind-the-scenes documentaries, what is actually behind-the-scenes of the documentary itself is even more interesting. There is a lot here that was essentially faked or constructed for purposes of interesting narrative.Arnold Essentially created a character for himself. He had already retired from Body Building and was only convinced to try for the Mr. Universe title again by the filmmakers who knew there was no doubt he would win from the start. The idea that Lou Farrigno ever had a chance was ridiculous, but they played up that idea and a rivalry that never really existed. Arnold stated later that he was not playing himself straight, but basically a character of himself. He made up a lot of lies and said a lot of outrageous things to make the movie seem more interesting. There were story lines with other chara ... " [More]

"Here’s the dilemma. I have a list of well over three thousand movies I want to see saved on IMDB. I have a subscription to Netflix and recently every time I return a DVD it has been an extremely arduous task to make the decision as to which movie I should see next. In an effort to narrow down my choices and make the process of choosing slightly less overwhelming I have devised a system, almost a bit of a game for me. Here’s how it goes. For my first film selection, I have narrowed the options down to only films that were released in the year 2006. Then after I have watched that movie, my next selection would have to be a film released in 2005. Then I would see a film from 2004, then 2003, etc. The process of deciding is still laborious, but actually quite a bit more exciting. (I'm going by IMDB as my source for release years)I have already been making a list and have also already begun watching the films. I decided this might be a good time to start fooling ...
