Directed by Andrew Davis.
A decorated Coast Guard search and rescue specialist still haunted by the death of his teammates during a disastrous mission off the coast of Alaska is charged with the task of training the next generation of Coast Guard rescue swimmers in director Andrew Davis' ocean-bound adventure drama. Ben Randall (Kevin Costner) was the best swimmer of his graduating class, but upon surfacing as the sole survivor of an Alaskan rescue mission attempted during a Category Three storm, his outlook on life has grown increasingly jaded. Now, as hotshot young swimmer Jake Fischer (Ashton Kutcher) arrives at Coast Guard rescue school looking to accomplish something meaningful with his life, he will be forced to endure the rigorous training methods of a man who expects nothing less than the very best in order to become a member of one of the most elite rescue squads on the planet. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"So I wasn't really that interested in seeing this movie because they casted the goofy Ashton Kutcher for the main part. But his performance as well as that of Kevin Costner were good and the movie was very entertaining. So if you like action movies I think you would enjoy this movie. " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski In The Guardian, Kevin Costner’s Bull Durham of the sea, you can snicker at teacherisms such as, “I have high hopes for this class. I have high hopes for you.” Or you may choose to lower your standards a bit and enjoy Andrew Davis’ movie for what it is: a Perfect Storm–brutal, Tough Mentor/Stubborn Student Flick of the Season cliché that’s better than any Costner–Ashton Kutcher vehicle ought to be. Maybe it’s because Davis, director of The Fugitive and Collateral Damage, knows that the roughest battle here isn’t man versus man, nor man versus himself, though both of these options are well-represented. No, it’s Mother Nature who will bitchslap tough guys and their egos back to the first day of kindergarten. Just like Costner’s grizzled veteran ballplayer in Durham—and his grizzled veteran golf pro in Tin Cup, and his return to grizzled veteran ballplayer in For Love of the Game— ... " [More]

"It is a guy's movie. We want to become a coast guard. We want to be cocky -funny to pick up the chicks. We want all the muscle so chicks can go crazy about us even if our pick up line does not work. We are great in in the bed eventhough she did not enjoy it. I liked the action sequences...the composition to real and fake was excelent!!! Yes, it is a good rental but then you have to see a chick flick with your girl to compensate that she watched this with you...and of course chicks that love Ashton Kutcher will enjoy it too. Cocky - funny have to done right otherwise...she is not sleeping with you... " [More]

"Someone told me this was like top gun. It was similar that they trained, learned a few lessions, struggled, then went on with a career and learned more lessions and fell back on training. I did enjoy this film and would watch it again if it was on TV " [More]

"Next stop on the movie marathon train: The Guardian. If you liked Top Gun and A Perfect Storm, you will love this movie.I will admit there were times when I expected Ashton Kutcher to start singing "You've lost that love and feelin' ". It was pretty good in the suspense department and the ending made me want to cry. I now know that I will never want to go to Ace School in the Coast Guard, but now have a new found appreciation for a part of the military I really didn't know much about to begin with. Ashton of course played the cocky young student with a troubled past and Kevin Costner (who in my opinion has not made a decent film since Dragonfly) played the guy that not only teaches the cocky young student a lesson but learns a lesson from him as well. I won't spoil the ending so I will stop here.Overall Score: B " [More]
