Directed by Edgar Wright.
A top London cop who is so good at his job that he makes his fellow officers look like slackers by comparison is "promoted" to serve in the sleepy village of Sandford in this contemporary action comedy from the creators of Shaun of the Dead. Police constable Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) always gets his man, but these days his impeccable record seems to be more indicative of his fellow officers' shortcomings than his own formidable skills as a keeper of the peace. Loathe to stand idly by as their once respectable track record is steadily soiled by the hyper-competent actions of one lone overachiever, Sergeant Angel's superiors at the Met soon determine to remedy their problem by relocating the decorated constable to the West Country village of Sanford -- where tranquil garden parties and neighborhood watch meetings stand in stark contrast to the violent crime and heated gunplay of the city. As Sergeant Angel does his best to adjust to the relative calm of his new environment, his oafish new partner Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) strives to gain the respect of his fellow constables while sustaining himself on fantasies of his favorite action films and police shows. Later, just as it begins to appear as if Sergeant Angel has been relegated to an uneventful existence in the relative calm of the countryside, a series of horrific "accidents" lead him to suspect that the tranquil hamlet of Sanford has fallen prey to a sinister plot which reeks of foul play. Jim Broadbent, Timothy Dalton, Steve Coogan, and Martin Freeman co-star in the Edgar Wright film. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Hot Fuzz is one of the funniest movies that I have seen in a long time- and one of the best. It has more pure laughs than even Borat or Clerks II and is a little sweeter, in both senses of the word, than both of those films. If you have ever had to sit through a dumb action film, you will find Hot Fuzz to be massively entertaining. The movie is directed by Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg, both of whom co-wrote the script and previously collaborated on Shaun of the Dead, which I haven't seen but you can sure bet I am planning to now. The story concerns police Sgt. Nicholas Angel (Pegg) who is the best and most bad-ass officer on the London force. How good is he? He's so good he makes the rest of the force look bad, so they ship him off to the small shire of Sandford, where things seem to be sort of like a British version of the Andy Griffith Show town. The police force is easy going and not very competent, mainly because there's not much crime. Of course, Angel ... " [More]

"Wow, it was hard to pick a winner, but it’s frozenhamster for his 4/20 post-- “Ghostbusters: London Calling. An Edgar Wright Film …England is about to get slimed! When ghosts get a passport to Europe they take London by storm and it's up to a special team of British parapsychologists to save the city. Killing ghosts and making jokes, all before tea time.” Steve Coogan (24 Hour Party People) as Peter Venkman, Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) as Ray, Martin Freeman (Tim on the British Office) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as Winston. Besides being a really fun idea, I like it because it’s its own thing and doesn’t try to “replace” anyone, especially the inimitable Bill Murray. Second prize: minerwerks – your post is a tour de force of film history, and thank you for directing our thoughts to the demented world of David Heavener (Kill Crazy). I'd also like to mention lazyalchemist's post. I especially liked imagining Rainn Wilson (The Office&rsq ... " [More]

"Awesome TopicThe New World - Just as T-Money said, this movie seemed advertised as a war movie, instead of the contemplative piece it was.Shaun of the Dead - I thought this movie looked so incredibly stupid from the trailer. So much so I never wanted to see it, until finally I was forced to, and thought it was the best comedy I had seen in a long time.Hot Fuzz - This time i didn't let the trailer discourage me, but still...people can't seem to give these films the advertisement they deserve.Night Watch - After seeing the trailer, I was so excited to see this film. I had to...every moment without it was painful. And then I watched it, and was disappointed. The movie isn't necessarily bad, but it's not nearly as good as the trailer makes it out to be. Although, I might just be partial to the M83 song they played over it (which never actually makes it into the film).Domino - Okay so the movie was exactly like the trailer. Just extended. When I first saw the trailer, I ... " [More]

"Edgar Wright has been linked to an adaptation of the Marvel superhero Ant Man since before even Shaun of the Dead was made. Surprisingly, he’s still attached to the project, a feat that is rare in Hollywood. But since Ant Man is a lesser character in the Marvel Universe, there seems to be less of a rush to get him up on the big screen. However, last week Wright told Empire that he has at least completed a screenplay after all these years, and he is taking a meeting (undoubtedly with someone from either Marvel Studios or Paramount) about the movie this week. The writer-director, who last gave us Hot Fuzz, is still unsure what his next gig will be, though he seems to have it narrowed down to Ant Man and another comic adaptation titled Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, the plot of which sounds more in line with Wright’s penchant for comedic gore. While I eagerly anticipate anything that Wright serves up, I’m especially interested in the Ant Man adaptation. In an interview with Mov ... " [More]

"A cop par excellence is re-assigned from his London beat to a small town in England's West. He arrives to find a serene and tight-knit community and a lax and not exactly competent police force service. As he follows his policeman instincts, he causes a lot more disturbance than the town is used to. Of course, nothing is what it seems in this sleepy place, and very soon a string of gruesome deaths ensues... Hot Fuzz starts nothing short of brilliant. Simon Pegg projects both single-mindedness of Sgt Nicholas Angel and his general bafflement over why other people do not share his attitude with the perfect blend of body language, facial expressions and quietly impeccable speech. I love the quick cuts that bridge the narrative. Angel's equanimity, coupled with the haplessness and indolence of his new comrades-in-arms, makes for great situational comedy.Unfortunately, when the plot picks up speed, the movie slides into grotesque and loses its brilliance. Nicholas starts ... " [More]

"I have heard people say over and over again, how although this film is funny, it isn't as good as Shaun Of The Dead. I personally think it is a hell of a lot better. I'm not saying that Shaun was a bad film, far from it, but I don't think it was as funny as this film is. The entire concept of this film just cracks me up. It's essentially a large number of gun weilding pensioners led by Jim Broadbent. The film is written perfectly with all the snappy little one-liners you would be expecting, as well as the whole buddy-cop theme being explored. It plays on conventions without over using any and whilst maintaining a little twist for you at the end. The laughs are constant the whole way through and the ending almost had me in tears - 'the greater good' - Certain aspects of the film may not appeal to an American market as much, although for all I know, they could have a different cut out there. But many of the jokes may not hit out there because of the di ... " [More]

"I dunno whether it was the fact I was railed to hell and gettin' drunk while I was watching it or what, but to me it lacked horribly. After Shaun of the Dead, I was expecting a great supertrooper-esq movie, I just wasn't feelin' this one guys, and for once I don't think that's thedrugs talking. " [More]

Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg don't simply parody their favorite genres of film and television, they skillfully mimic the most minute details that define those genres while simultaneously instilling them with their own unique comic sensibilities to create something truly original. Whereas the Scary Movie or The Naked Gun films are content to merely spoof the standards of their respective genres by cramming as many jokes about their targets as possible into the script, Wright and Pegg's efforts transcend self-aware mockery to actually fit into the genres that they appear to ridicule -- right down to the structure, characterization, and execution. With Spaced the duo offered a pop-culture-strewn spoof of the common television sitcom, with Shaun of the Dead they set their sights on the zombie apocalypse films and romantic comedies, and now, with Hot Fuzz, they have targeted the police detective film and the slam-bang action thriller -- specifically such overblown, testosterone-fueled shooters as Point Break and Bad Boys II. As par for the course with Wright and Pegg, Hot Fuzz delivers a smart balance of visual gags, subtle jabs, and gut-busting laughs that will have most viewers planning a second viewing as soon as the credits begin to roll. Some jokes pay off in the very same scene as the setup, and others are smartly spread out through the span of the entire film. Likewise, the timing of each joke is expertly handled by ace editor Chris Dickens. Having been with team Wright-Pegg since the early days of Spaced, Dickens truly understands the comic sensibilities of his collaborators and deserves nearly as much credit as the writers themselves for his skillful handling of the material. But the timing isn't the only thing that Dickens does right, his aping of the frantic editing style so predominant in big-budget action blockbusters is so effective during the final showdown that viewers who stepped in late may momentarily mistake Hot Fuzz for a Michael Bay flick. Of course, anyone who is familiar with Spaced or Shaun of the Dead knows that the onscreen chemistry between writer/star Pegg and Cornetto-loving pal Nick Frost is reason enough alone to warrant the price of admission, and while it's great to see such familiar faces as Spaced's Julia Deakin and Shaun's Bill Nighy popping in to have some fun with old friends, it's the malevolent hand-wringing of Timothy Dalton, the carefree cake chomping of Jim Broadbent, and the mustachioed machismo of Paddy Considine that truly push Hot Fuzz over the top. As Shaun of the Dead proved it was indeed possible to entertain both well-versed horror fan and the adventurous mainstream audience in equal measure, Hot Fuzz maintains that smart sense of balance by walking the line between action and comedy in a way that will have keen-eyed action fetishists struggling to keep up with the nonstop film references as the rest of the crowd just sits back and laughs. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
