Directed by Sunu Gonera.
A college-educated African-American schoolteacher frustrated by his inability to find a job repairs an abandoned recreational pool hall in hopes of starting Philadelphia's first African-American swim team in this inspirational drama that takes its cue from the true-life story of charismatic 1970s-era schoolteacher Jim Ellis. The year is 1973 and the job market is tight. Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard) may have a college diploma, but despite his education he still can't seem to find a job. An aspiring teacher with a lifelong love of competitive swimming, Ellis determines to take his future into his own hands when he discovers a deserted recreational pool hall in the slums of the city. Though he and kindly local janitor Elston (Bernie Mac) do their best to get the crumbling pool hall in working order, the pair find their benevolent efforts thwarted when the building is targeted for demolition. Little do the forces that be know that Jim isn't a man to quietly lie down and admit defeat; despite the racism, violence, and threats made by an unsympathetic city official that all threaten to destroy his vivid new dream, the man who was once without purpose boldly resolves to recruit troubled street teens and transform them into capable swimmers in time for the upcoming state championships. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"By Tricia Olszewski With lines such as “If you quit now, you quit on those kids...but most importantly, you quit on yourself,” Pride doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. The components of its story arc are predictable: underdogs, resistance, determination, conflict, success. Whether the challenges are spiritual or tangible doesn’t matter: You need only pass the first checkpoint to know the rest of the way. But with Terrence Howard around, the ride isn’t quite so dull. Howard plays Jim Ellis, a Philadelphia swim coach who, in 1973, helped save a recreation center slated to be shuttered. A competitive Southern swimmer who was often forced out of meets back in the ’60s because of racism, Ellis moves north after obtaining a degree and tries to get a teaching position at an all-white academy. When he’s shut down—no subtlety here—Ellis is sent by the city to help pack up a decrepit rec center that still houses a stubborn j ... " [More]

"Pride- ***1/2Directed by Suna Gonera March 23, 2007When a movie is based on a true story, I try to do whatever it is to steer away from it and not learn anything about it. It's best this way and you don't know what you're going to be in store for. Pride is a true story that isn't all about a black swimming team who wants respect from the other white swimming teams but about how something good can effect a whole. It's these little inspirational true stories that we have no clue about until they get put on the silver screen with a great actor and script. It's only when this happens that we get to see such a good story be told to the entire world.A man comes to a run down, dirty, and drug filled community, who at first, has no means of changing that community but when he encounters some young men in search of guidance, he has nothing else to do but change that community for the better. And boy, does he ever. That man is Jim Ellis (a pitch perfect Terrence Howar ... " [More]

"Terrence Howard plays Jim Ellis in this based on a true story film about an abandoned recreational pool in Philadelphia's ghetto. Jim was one of I am sure very very few African American swimmers in the 70's who was often times not allowed to swim. Struggling to find a job, the City hires him to clean up an old building before it is going to be tore down. After some hard work he fixes up the swimming pool and invites some of the neighbor boys who had played basketball outside everyday inside to swim and cool off. After a lot of training they form a team and begin to compete with other schools. It is a great feel good movie, if you liked Remember the Titans and Coach Carter you will like this. Another great story, just with a different sport. " [More]
