Directed by Tony Scott.
Adrenaline-loving director Tony Scott teams with iconic action producer Jerry Bruckheimer for this high-flung sci-fi action thriller concerning a New Orleans-based maverick ATF agent named Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) who is brought in on a top-secret government program to catch the terrorist (Jim Caviezel) responsible for a ferry bombing that kills hundreds. Able to do what most law enforcement officers only dream of, Carlin is now able to look back in time at the perpetrator's movements, and at the life of the innocent woman whose death would set the events into motion. Carlin's instincts tell him that something is amiss, however, and while the government agent who tapped him for the job (Val Kilmer) and the team of ultra-cool scientists who run the project (Adam Goldberg, Erika Alexander) tell him one story about the quantum physics behind this marvel of technology, the hotshot agent suspects that there is a greater power at their fingertips -- one that might not just solve the crime at hand, but prevent it. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Liked: Denzel Washington; the story and the concept.Disliked: Some scientific incongruities - avoiding nerdgassing is very hard when watching a sci-fi movie of this type. Verdict: Thwarting a mass murderer is one subject that I can get behind every time. Deja Vu is a gripping thriller, ably carried by one of the greatest actors of our time. " [More]

"A competent thriller that was better than I expected, but which just didn't do enough to engage me. The idea was both interesting and preposterous, but did lead to interesting situations. Somehow, I just felt that there was something missing. Denzel Washington at his "smarmiest". " [More]

"God Bless Movie Trailer Makers. I honestly believe that. Sometimes, the best thing in the movie you're about to see is the trailers. And they've gotten to be really good, so good that they can turn a movie you'd never pay for into an anticipated event. And then there's the trailer that makes you think you're about to enter a strange new world, only to find out that it's nothing more mysterious than what's been seen before a thousand times over.Deja Vu was packaged as a psychological thriller with action and suspense. The problem is that it cheated in every sense of the term. It cheats you into seeing the movie. It cheats its characters into being 2-dimensional. And then it cheats itself into being a confounded mess of confusion. It starts with a terrorist act, a New Orleans ferry is blown up, hundreds injured and killed. Enter Denzel Washington as an ATF agent that realizes that things aren't as they're supposed to be when he has his fingerprints ... " [More]

"What a great / fun movie to watch. I have glanced over this one at the video store a few times. Now I wish I would have checked it out earlier. There is some great tech humor in this film and also just an exciting plot line. " [More]

"DEJA VU (2006)**1/2PG-13 (for intense sequences of violence and terror, disturbing images and some sensuality)2 hrs. 6 min.written by: Bill Marsilii & Terry Rossioproduced by: Jerry Bruckheimerdirected by: Tony ScottIn my last review, I had taken a look at what director Ridley Scott gave audiences last fall, so it's only fitting that I now focus on what film his brother, director Tony Scott released at around the same time. "Deja Vu" shows a return to the techno thriller genre for Scott ("Enemy of the State" & "Crimson Tide") after the the powerful "Man on Fire" and the deeply bizarre ride of "Domino". ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington, re-teaming once again with Scott) is called in to recover evidence in the investigation of a New Orleans ferry bombing, carrying hundreds of military officers and civilians. At first, the tragedy is seen as a horrific act of terrorism but then Carlin finds the body of Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton), apparently washed up on the sh ... "Déjà vu (2006) is a big Hollywood production by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean; National Treasure) directed by the veteran Tony Scott (Man on Fire; Spy Game) from a script by Bill Marsilii (first time) and Terry Rossio (involved in various ways with many collaborative scripts such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Shrek). To see whether you would like it, read the following two movie plots. A shy but good looking girl meets a nerdy young man with no manners. Boy loses girl, and girl happily loses boy. He signs on as a roadie with his favourite rock band but discovers that they eat organic food and listen to personal development tapes. When he returns and bumps into the girl, she is impressed with the progress, and things look promising between the two. But in the last two minutes of the movie, he announced that he has just realized he is gay. The end. Or: The detective cannot decide whether the woman was murdered by her jealous husband or by her eccen ... " [More]

Tony Scott is in no shortage of the trademark bombast that marks the American institution known as the popcorn flick. But while the best directors in the action thriller genre either suck us in with an adrenaline contact high (Michael Bay) or invite us to laugh at their deliberately over-the-top antics (John Woo), Déjà Vu meanders between these two. The movie indeed covers most of its bases: Large, impressive explosions? Check. Badass, lone-wolf protagonist? Check. Totally preposterous scientific premise? Check. The only problem is that you can't quite give yourself over to a movie like this when you aren't sure if its creators are in on the joke. None of its escapades are screamingly crazy enough to prove that the movie's ridiculousness is intentional, so sometimes Déjà Vu's cocky horseplay goes from good-bad to bad-bad. This doesn't mean the film isn't lovable in its own (probably) blind fury. On the contrary, the bastardized quantum physics that drive the plot will provide substantial laughter for the geeks in the audience, and Denzel Washington delivers the cool bravado we want when his only job in a movie is to show up and play himself. Scott also appears to have cemented his own signature camera shot, a video-game-style move where the camera races forward at super-speed and then halts and swivels to the side in slow-motion to focus on the action for three or four seconds (it looks exactly like a fatality in Burnout 3, if that helps). All that this unapologetic swaggering does is allow you to get the most out of the delightfully absurd climax, but there's something considerably less satisfying about going along for the ride without knowing if you're doing it in spite of yourself. In the end, Déjà Vu is most certainly worth the price of admission, but it probably won't earn it a place on your list of hardcore action thriller guilty pleasures. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
