Directed by Nancy Meyers.
Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy Holiday stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two women who exchange houses in order to get a new lease on life. After each suffers her fair share of romantic disappointments, Englishwoman Iris (Winslet) and L.A. woman Amanda (Diaz) meet on-line at a website devoted to helping people exchange houses for vacations. Each agrees to spend the Christmas holiday at the other's home. While each suffers from a minor case of culture shock, both women also end up becoming involved with a man. Iris makes the acquaintance of an upbeat everyman played by Jack Black, while Amanda spends time with a handsome Brit played by Jude Law. Both women must decide what to do with these new relationships as their pre-arranged house switch is scheduled to last less than two weeks. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

"Everything you could want in a Romantic Comedy and more with the double plot. Both stories were well developed and when the movie ended, I found myself hoping for a sequal. This is one of the few movies that I have bought. " [More]

"I am not a sucker for romantic comedies. I am a chick and will watch some flicks, but I am not a chick who can actually stomach many chick-flicks. It's not that I don't try. Yet, so many romantic comedies, those films typically deemed 'chick-flicks,' recycle the same formula and have little original about them. They end up feeling a bit like a half-eaten stale doughnut: sweet, but too chewy to swallow.I heard some mixed reviews about the Holiday, so I added it to my Netflix queue just in time for the holidays. I did like the concept of an American fleeing to England for a little while. That's something I'd love to do if I were a woman with time and money. I am not, so that bit of fantasy was appealing. Also, there seemed to be a stellar assembly of stars for this vehicle. Nancy Meyers, further, directed this piece of cotton candy, and her other romantic comedies usually have something interesting or original going for them, even if the movie isn ... " [More]

"I'm not a huge fan of chick fix, chrsitmas is my bag, but this is the two combined (kind of). In this movie we don't actually get to see their Christmas day celebrations, it goes from Chrsitmas eve to New years eve. At 2 hours 15 mins I found it dragged, Black was not on screen nearly enough and Law's charachter was completely unbeleivable (the whole dead wife thing). If you've seen 'Vanilla Sky', then your know what I mean, Diaz's charachter was the same as the one in VS (except for turning out to be a phyco-maniac) and I felt she was going to turn any second. This is a shame, because I love Diaz, but, again, I found her character unreal, someone who's never cried before, even though they try their harest - come on. Highlights - Black, Winslet's Cottage, Law's kids. " [More]

"I watched this twice in two days which should give you an inkling of how much I adore it. The Holiday has 2 parallel story lines, the first(with Cameron Diaz) of which is stronger. Cameron Diaz completely steals the show, bringing her quirky(which carried There's Something About Mary) to the next level. She obviously toned up for this film, and justifies the "Barbie" comment what with her fantastic hair and wardrobe. The movie is incredibly easy on the eyes, and you fall in love first with the setting(gorgeous LA home) and then the cast. It has all the ingredients: the sudden twist(Jude's history), the heartbreaking triumph of the underdog (the scriptwriter gets his night), the complete relatable-ness(Iris stands up for the 60% of women out there stuck on pesky men). Despite the completely predictable plot which is a turn-off if you read it on a DVD cover, you find yourself wanting to believe and engage with what's occuring on the screen. The ending is no fairytale but ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Right at the gate, The Holiday has two things working against it: It’s seasonally themed. And it’s a romantic comedy. You can’t stitch together a more dangerous combination, even with writer-director Nancy Meyers (see: Something’s Gotta Give) in charge—or perhaps that should be “especially with” (don’t see: What Women Want). Meyers is known for nailing the realities of romance, and she sometimes does. But, dammit, she just can’t resist that sprinkling of fairy dust, and The Holiday gets a generous dose. The focus is on two hardworking women who, trying to recover from bad relationships, agree to swap homes for solo vacations. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) is a movie-trailer editor who sleeps with her BlackBerry instead of her straying boyfriend (Edward Burns). Iris (Kate Winslet) is a newspaper reporter who’s getting mixed messages from an ex (Rufus Sewell) and is devastated when she finds out he’s getti ... " [More]

"A perfect movie for the holidays. It's predictable and totally unoffensive. I gave it two stars -- one for the wardrobe of Diaz's character and one for casting Jack Black as a leading man. " [More]

"I thaught it is one of the best chick flicks ever. Yes I am a guy who likes chick flicks. People think i am wierd (and gay) but i am not. The story was so clever. It had a story that only a wemon could write. And a women did. The casting was perfect. Kate Winslet shined as always, my favorite movie of hers is Titanic of course. Cameron Diaz was at her funniest making me laugh all the time. Jude Law is a man much like me. "I am a major weeper!" Is a quote from the movie that he said and i am the same, i cry. He also likes the girls. By far it was one of the best. " [More]

"I absolutely loved this movie. Yes, I am a chick flick kind of girl, but don't dwell, I love not so chick flick movies as well! The idea behind this movie was a great one. I never would have thought of trading houses with a strager living on a different continent. If my heart has just been broken (again) that would be the perfect idea! I also loved how the characters were so easy to relate to. Great movie! " [More]

"From now on, I'm watching Cameron Diaz movies in full-screen. I can't handle the widescreen close-ups of her smile.I didn't think The Holiday was bad. I've seen my fair share of chick flicks to satisfy my wife... this wasn't bad, but it was forgettable. So many movies that try to fit into the romantic comedy genre plod along like reasonable entertainment until they jump the shark in some way or another. An ordinary guy suddenly has time time and money to fly across the world in pursuit of his love. Or two lovebirds suddenly don't have to live like the rest of us (getting up on time and reporting to a job), so they kill 8 consecutive days under a shady tree in Central Park. You get my drift. So maybe it was a stroke of genius that the writer removed the "jump the shark" threat by making all of the main characters quasi-celebrities. An editor, a movie trailer producer, a film composer, and a newspaper writer. I don't roll my eyes because I ... " [More]

With The Holiday, director Nancy Meyers aspires to something more than your average chick flick. At least, that would seem to be her intention, since she's building a standard romantic comedy using non-standard parts. Cameron Diaz is the only real genre veteran here, with Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black all relatively new to the experience. But instead of their outsider talents elevating the material, under Meyers, Winslet et al fall quickly in line with genre norms. This leaves The Holiday -- a film about the desperate need for new scenery -- feeling all too familiar. Which isn't to say it's not a watchable piece of seasonal romantic fluff; just don't confuse it for more than that. Winslet, the most surprising inclusion in the cast, actually seems rather joyous, liberated from the serious demands of her more typical roles. Quite the opposite is the case for Black, who's usually the zaniest guy in the room, and seems a little subdued playing it straight. But the Tenacious D prankster does sneak in some of the improvisational scatting his fans love -- a much-needed, all-too-brief reminder of how going outside the box is supposed to feel. Too bad the Black-Winslet storyline gets the short shrift, given only a hasty romantic angle after she's already spent considerable time befriending an octogenarian screenwriter. Diaz' high-maintenance film editor gets more celluloid, even though she's harder to warm up to -- and not just because she's in an actual wintry environment. Law's charm makes that task a little easier, especially when a surprise revelation gives the impossibly handsome womanizer -- both on screen and in real life -- some extra dimension. The Holiday may not be as different as its director envisioned, but the target audience should be happy enough in these familiar surroundings. ~ All Movie Guide
