Directed by Rob Reiner.
Based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, The Princess Bride is staged as a book read by grandfather (Peter Falk) to his ill grandson (Fred Savage). Falk's character assures a romance-weary Savage that the book has much more to deliver than a simpering love story, including but not limited to fencing, fighting, torture, death, true love, giants, and pirates. Indeed, The Princess Bride offers a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale depicting stable boy-turned-pirate Westley's journey to rescue Buttercup (Robin Wright), his true love, away from the evil prince (Chris Sarandon), whom she had agreed to marry five years after learning of what she had believed to be news of Westley's death. With help from Prince Humperdinck's disgruntled former employee Miracle Max (Billy Crystal), swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and a very large man named Fezzik (Andre the Giant), the star-crossed lovers are reunited. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

"I never knew it was so easy to add lightsaber effects to any YouTube clip. Earlier this week, when I wrote about the new Clone Wars lightsaber game for the Nintendo Wii, I saw it done with the infamous “Star Wars Kid” video (see it here). And now, thanks again to Fark.com, I see it done with a clip from The Princess Bride (above). Apparently, this is only the latest in a trend; people have been changing swords to lightsabers in nearly every movie featuring swashbuckling, including the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (see here and here), the Lord of the Rings movies (here), the recent Zorro movies (here), Kill Bill (here), Gladiator (here) and 300 (here). Someone even recently added the effect to the end of Boogie Nights (here). This clip, though, seems most relevant, because now it seems as if the six-fingered man didn’t kill Inigo Montoya’s father, he is Inigo Montoya’s father. It’s just like the end of The Empire Strikes Back, except Inigo Montoya is so much cooler than Luke Sky ... " [More]

"These are just some of my favorites that are kid-friendly and NOT Disney: Babe - Brings the tears every time I watch it. The Princess Bride - My favorite movie to watch when staying at home from school with a cold as a kid. The Bear - A live-action version of Bambi, but with a bear. Beetlejuice - I've always viewed this as a kid-friendly horror movie; a lurid sub-text to the film yet done without the bad language or overly horrific effects. Big - Just plain fun for kids and parents. Chicken Run - Not a favorite of mine, but know lots of friends with kids that love it. E.T. - Again, always brings the tears. Edward Scissorhands - Parents might want to exercise discretion with this one: there are some adult themes, but it is done in such a magical / fairy-tale manner that older kids can understand it. The Iron Giant - LOVE this film and perfect for the whole family. Jurassic Park - Might be a little too intense for the little kids, but definitely a great action flick for the junior c ... " [More]

"Well now that it's over, I guess I'll chime in. My idea is to recast this film with characters from other movies. Meaning, new actors, playing the Princess Bride character as a character they have allready played in another movie. This would probably be the worst movie ever so.............. here it goesWestley ..... Zach Braff as Andrew Largeman as the retarded football player in the made for TV movie referenced in Garden StateButtercup / The Princess Bride ..... Christina Ricci as Rae from Black Snake Moan - this will probably change the rating a bit.Inigo Montoya ..... John Turturro as Jesus The Bowler in The Big LebowskiPrince Humperdinck ..... "As I mentioned back when I reviewed the film’s trailer, I will be seeing Tarsem Singh’s The Fall for the eye candy alone. But now Roadside Attractions has unveiled a clip from the fantasy drama (via Yahoo!), and there’s not one bit of that sweet, delicious spectacle I crave. Fortunately, the scene actually works for the film because it has none of the flashy visuals. The young actress here is terrific, seemingly working off her costar with a combination of innocence and improvisation (the miscommunication at the end is priceless, whether it was off the cuff or scripted that way). It gives us a sense that this isn’t a film only for the eyes, but is also for the heart, as in a Cinema Paradiso or (2008 Sundance-winner) Captain Abu Raed or something. In fact I kind of wish the man in the scene was a much older fella. In the film, which opens May 9, the girl (played by Catinca Untaru) and the man (Pushing Daisies’s Lee Pace) featured in the clip are both bedridden in a hospital. The ma ... " [More]

"This week, we're recasting The Princess Bride (1987). It's a classic that would be a travesty for some money hungry Hollywood exec to try and remake, which is exactly why we're imagining a remake. I hope a new cast comes out of this that makes me salivate for a remake, but I predict this will be an exercise in imagining how bad a remake of this movie could screw up.This is a FIlmspotting contest and a winner will be announced on the Filmspotting podcast April 18, 2008. Extra credit goes to anyone who casts Samuel L. Jackson and rewrites a classic Princess Bride quote just for him. Cary Elwes ... WestleyRobin Wright Penn ... "After a second-half career slump, director Rob Reiner has taken great pains to critic-proof his latest film, “The Bucket List.” “I'll pair two of America's best-loved elder actors, give them oddly endearing eccentricities, saddle them with a terminal illness, but show how they learn to LOVE LIFE!!!” he says (exclamation marks are a necessity here). So when a critic attempts to lay into the film for being rote and pandering, he or she will be derided for besmirching the actors' good names and callously drubbing those dealing with cancer.Well, bring on the hate mail. This is “Wild Hogs for the septuagenarian set (“Mild Hogs?” “Terminal Hogs?”), and it is a TV dinner of a film – everything spooned out in carefully measured proportions, pre-packaged and cold, without a hint of spice or surprise. The two ailing leads are a cantankerous old wisecracking coot and a gentle, grounded guru who are both diagnosed with the b ... Both a tribute to and revision of fairy tales past, The Princess Bride manages to combine subtle, acerbic humor with a classic understanding of what makes the elements of fantasy so appealing to children. Director Rob Reiner took a chance on William Goldman's novel of the same name; though the central plot is unarguably Westley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup's (Robin Wright) journey to happily-ever-after, a variety of subplots and personal quests make for the daunting prospect of producing a film that very well might have too much going on. A surprisingly gentle performance from late wrestling icon Andre the Giant, along with an excellent supporting team including Billy Crystal, Wallace Shawn, and Mandy Patinkin, however, not only make the intermingling of plots seem perfectly natural, but express a sense of camraderie so realistic that one hardly notices the subject at hand is as likely to be the pitfalls of life in the revenge business as it is the tedious process of bringing one back from the dead. Patinkin in particular is compelling as Inigo, a Spanish swordsman on an obsessive quest to avenge his father's murder, while Wright plays the title role of with all of the angst, priss, and unbending faith in true love expected from a princess. Elwes' Westley, however, is far cry from the traditional knight in shining armor--clothed in all back and well-versed in the pirating industry, Wesley is a verifiable fairy-tale bad-boy--and like the film itself, somehow, it just works. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide
