Directed by Will Speck, Josh Gordon.
Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, and Will Arnett headline this high-concept comedy concerning two male figure-skating rivals aching to compete despite having been banned from the sport. Their medals stripped after getting into a highly publicized fight at the World Championships, star figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) are barred from ever competing in the sport again. Upon discovering a loophole that will allow them to perform together in the pairs figure skating category, the two athletes determine to put their differences aside in order to pursue their gold medal aspirations. "Semi-Pro could have been an extremely funny movie. There are moments of absolute hilarity that had me rolling over in my seat, and several scenes during which I was shaking with uncontrollable mirth through several jokes. However, there were also times when I almost turned the movie off because it was so bad...that's something I've never done during a Will Ferrell movie. Will Ferrell tends to keep the jokes coming at an alarming rate, no matter how cheap or stupid the gags are. Even last year's Blades of Glory was funny throughout, and it was probably one of the shallowest comedies I'd ever seen. The thing with Semi-Pro is that it often shies away from things that could've been VERY funny, or just mentions them in passing and only allows for a few chuckles. Half the jokes even feel recycled from Anchorman, such as Jackie Moon's (thankfully underdeveloped) obsession with his hair. Also, the fact that Jackie hasn't even had sex with his smokin' hot wife while hundreds of other ... " [More]

"If you go into this film with as low expectations as I went into it, you'll find you might enjoy this film. Especially if you're in the mood to laugh. A Will Ferrell movie is chock full of his idiosyncrasies, and this movie is no exception. But this time, it's tempered with Jon Heder's brand of humor, and they make a perfect odd couple. I found myself laughing throughout, even at the scatological humor, which most of the time I find to be puerile, but it's actually funny here. The "killer" move they attempt to learn is lifted right from the film "The Cutting Edge", that film being a guilty pleasure of mine, I found extremely humorous. It's definitely not a classic, but it's ludicrousness is good for a few laughs. " [More]

"This has not been a good week to be at New Line Cinema. After getting enslaved by the Time-Warner media monolith last week, the company could not even trumpet its swansong. “Semi-Pro,” the Will Ferrell sports comedy, was the last film to be released while still remaining a “free agent,” tanked at the box office, squeezing out $3 million less than “Meet the Spartans” just a few weeks ago.Let that sink in.Will Ferrell, who has a string of successes and is a worldwide box office “star,” made less in a comedy than a film that’s biggest asset was a Britney Spears clone shaving her head and breakdancing gladiators.Prognosticators are scratching their heads as to how this could happen, offering theories of a tired formula (Will Ferrell + a sport + wacky non-sequiturs = funny), an unstable movie-going weekend (though “Ghost Rider” did better in its second week last year at the same time and “Madea’s Family Reunion ... "There are so many on my list that it would be hard for me to remember them all. But I just watched Blades of Glory the other day and really thought this was cute. I have to say I really laughed out loud at a few parts. I love Will Ferrell movies, I get his sense of humor and he just cracks me up. I think my all time favorite comedy, though, has to be Airplane - I still love watching that movie over and over again. OF course I also love the old, old Classics like any Marx Brothers film, Abbott and Costello (especially when they meet the different monsters), Bing Crosby and Bob Hope movies...let's see there is also, Some Like it Hot, Bringing up Baby, so many others. What are some of your favorites? " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski You’ve lied. You’re called on it. What do you do? Certain people crumble. Others, like author Clifford Irving, are further emboldened: They don’t merely deny the charge; they add a few more layers to their story, plus lots of outrage. Irving, the subject of Lasse Hallström’s The Hoax, nearly got away with his most famous lie in the early ’70s, and it was far from a tiny fib. Frustrated by his failure as a writer, Irving pitched a biography on reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes, telling publisher McGraw-Hill that Hughes selected him to tell his story. Irving had a handwritten directive from Hughes as evidence and whispered of communications with Hughes. He humbly admitted to the execs that he was as astonished as they were. The thing is, Irving had never met Hughes, and the letters were forged by Irving himself. At least that’s how it started according to the film, which was written by William Wheeler based on Irving&rs ... " [More]

"I guess my perspective as a believer is different because I barely lasted ten minutes into the film. Its rated PG13, but it should really be rated higher then that. Maybe it got better later on, but it just wasn't worth sitting through. There were several other people that left the film even before we had made the same discission. As we were leaving we were joined by many other occupants of the theater. I was shocked because when we asked for a refund- they not only denyed my money back, but they wouldnt let us view another movie instead. The movie was so bad- I wanted my $1.50 back. " [More]

"Going into a movie like Blades Of Glory, you expect certain things. A silly movie with guys in spandex, and lots of laughs. Well I got a silly movie with guys in spandex, but no laughs. there were absolutely no laugh out loud moments in this film for me. In fact I only smiled 2 or 3 times. Will Ferrell, who I love and always seem to enjoy his films is just rehashing stuff in this one. I'm beginning to think that he always does this, and maybe It's starting to get old for me. John Heder is not funny at all. In fact, most of the cast is not funny in this. I really wasn't expecting much, and I'm not giving up on Ferrel, but I'm starting to grow weary of these films. "If you accept the fact that it is just going to be silly, then you might enjoy this film. Personally, for me it was just OK -- I only really laughed out loud once ("FLASH ... AAAAHHHHAAAA ... Master of the Universe!"). But, then again, just looking at Will Ferrell makes me laugh, so I am kind of biased. Jon Heder was horrible, though. Just horrible. " [More]

Blades of Glory may well be the Will Ferrell movie for people who don't like Will Ferrell movies. It's hard to believe, since an outlandish sports comedy where the SNL vet plays a slovenly egomaniac probably sounds like the quintessential Ferrell flick. But where movies like Anchorman and Talladega Nights -- and even non-Ferrell sports comedies like Dodgeball -- depend on comedian improvisation, and on scenes in the script that delve into the truly bizarre, Blades of Glory actually sticks fairly rigidly to its story. This has its benefits; Ferrell rarely indulges in his usual uncontrollable rants, and while he may be treading on fairly well-worn territory with his character, it's a persona that works well for him. Likewise, Jon Heder finds success in a role that's quite the opposite of Napoleon Dynamite, playing a dainty and elegant figure skater with a mane of blonde, Leif Garrett-like curls (though you'll catch him slipping into the Dynamite voice here and there, like a suppressed foreign accent). Unfortunately, while these concessions may tone down the elements that don't agree with non-fans of the cast, they also rob the movie of what many viewers are looking for. Co-stars Amy Poehler and Will Arnett are surely capable of extreme hilarity as an uncomfortably close rival brother-sister skating team, but the script provides them little dialogue besides words to further the plot, and we're even cheated out of seeing the entirety of their skating routine as Marilyn Monroe and JFK. The Office's Jenna Fischer is as adorable onscreen as ever, but she's given little opportunity to utilize her great comic timing (though we're offered the consolation prize of seeing her in a bustier). There are plenty of funny moments, most of them dependent on the homoeroticism of male-male pairs skating -- which you can't really claim you didn't see coming. There are also, somewhat surprisingly, a number of skating in-jokes; pretty much every prominent American skater from the past 30 years makes an appearance, and you might notice that the secret, experimental move in Ferrell and Heder's routine is the exact same one from 1992's The Cutting Edge -- though it's much more impressive here, where we're given shady footage of it, previously only being legal in North Korea. In the end, Blades of Glory has what its target audience is looking for, it just doesn't have a lot of it. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
