Directed by Michael Lehmann.
Diane Keaton stars as a unconditionally loving, but meddling, mother whose vain attempt to prevent her insecure youngest daughter from repeating the same mistakes that she made leads to a series of comic misunderstandings in director Michael Lehmann's affectionate family comedy. When it comes to the topic of motherhood, Daphne Wilder (Keaton) has seen it all. Her eldest daughter, Maggie (Lauren Graham), is a highly respected psychologist and her middle daughter, Mae (Piper Perabo), is both sexy and smart, but youngest Milly (Mandy Moore) just can't seem to get things right no matter how hard she tries. Recognizing that the romantic exploits of her charming-but-struggling youngest always seem to end in tears, concerned mother Daphne vows to find Millie the perfect man. Though she always means well, Daphne's misguided attempt to set her daughter up by placing a carefully worded personal ad proves once and for all that even the most well-intending of mothers can sometimes overstep their boundaries. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Released: February 2, 2007Director: Michael Lehmann*****How can a movie with such good actors fall completely flat? Insipid writing and a borderline psychotic character parading around in the so-called best interests of her daughter. Is Because I Said So the disaster it was made out to be earlier this year? No. But it's not exactly at the top of any 2007 list, either. The greatest disservice the script does is to Diane Keaton, who has made a career out of playing the pushy mother type. It's a fine line between well meaning and amusing mother and what she's reduced to here: aggravating, needy and nosy.So what makes Daphne (Keaton) such a busy-body mother? She harasses her youngest daughter Milly (Mandy Moore) about her love life, going as far as to place a personal ad for the girl. Daphne ends up pulling the strings behind a meeting between Milly and architect Jason (Tom Everett Scott) even though she'd rather see Johnny (Gabriel Macht) and his son Lionel. As these types of ... "You'll like this movie... Because I Said So!! Okay not so much maybe. This is a very good example of one of those films whose trailer is at least 15.5 times better than the film. This film stars Diane Keaton, Mandy Moore and Lauren Graham, Piper Perabo and Stephen Collins both have smaller parts and I actually like all of these actors very much. The actors and director Michael Lehmann really aren't at fault here... well other than not knowing a bad script when they see it. At times I didn't even know what was going on in this movie or what they were talking about. None of these characters were particularly likeable. Keep at it Mandy, I think you're great, I'm hoping Southland Tales turns out to be a better movie for you. This movie was a waste of time I can't believe how many good reviews this has gotten on this site!!! " [More]

"well, if you put aside that the main character is cheating on her boyfriends throughout a majority of the film, then it’s a good movie- I liked the idea of the movie, but I hate how they made it seem like cheating on somebody was easily dismissible and forgivable... its at least worth watching, but not good enough to be a favorite movie. "By Tricia Olszewski A movie is at a certain disadvantage when you want to punch its main character in the face. Because I Said So is, give or take, a torturous 102 minutes, thanks to Diane Keaton’s irritating portrayal of an overprotective mom. It’s not entirely Keaton’s fault, though considering her similar role in 2005’s The Family Stone, she’s not on a good track. Stepmom scripters Karen Leigh Hopkins and Jessie Nelson went delirious inventing Daphne (Keaton), an unbelievable nightmare of a woman who gives her youngest daughter, Milly (Mandy Moore), advice about her standards in men by saying, “Don’t forget that you have one breast smaller than the other.” Milly, you see, is “headed toward a cliff” because she’s in her mid-20s and isn’t in a serious relationship, unlike her married older sisters, Maggie (Lauren Graham) and—ugh—Mae (Piper Perabo). So mother, thinking she knows best, takes out a pe ... " [More]

"I really didn't think this movie was good. In fact, after it was over, I was kinda mad that I had spent almost two hours watching it. I like Diane Keaton, but she wasn't good at all in this movie. And, although Mandy Moore has done some pretty good work in the past, this role was not suited for her. The whole movie just seemed really over-acted and very predictable. I would not recommend it unless you are the teenaged-Mandy Moore-crazed type. " [More]

"The idea of a mother meddling in the lives of her children is not new. The happy ending where everything works out for the best isn't new either. The method with which these ideas are expressed is tolerable, and even cute. If you can be satisfied solely on character development, you probably will like this movie. " [More]

"This is a funny, good fun, go eat popcorn, and laugh movie, to share with your girl friends. Noticed that women outnumbered men at the theator about 10 to one. So if your a single guy, hhmmmm, might meet a happy woman. Crittics sorta bummed it out, but I enjoyed it and laughed. Anything that makes you laugh cant be all bad. " [More]
