Directed by John McTiernan.
Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has a code of honor which he will not violate, even when his life depends on it. Paradoxically, his code of honor gives him the backbone to survive as a military special forces operative when he is sent on a covert mission to rescue another group which was sent in to assist some nefarious U.S. government plan in a Latin American country. Once there, he encounters an old army buddy (Carl Weathers) who has gotten too deep in the CIA's good graces for Dutch's comfort. When he and his team go into the jungle to rescue the others, they get involved in a pitched battle with local guerillas, but they are more than capable of besting these vicious fighters. However, not long after that, they encounter signs that the equally capable men they were sent to rescue were all killed unawares and in an unusually gruesome fashion. Given their training, it should have been impossible for anyone to best all of these commando warriors. Soon, the men from Dutch's own team get picked off one by one, as they grow aware that they are up against something uncanny, not of this world, something that is hunting them for sport. Why? Because their skills make them worthy opponents for the perfectly camouflaged Predator. This carefully paced action movie was given poor reviews by many movie critics, but was sufficiently satisfying for its (largely male) audiences that a successful sequel (Predator 2) was released in 1990. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

"Released: June 12, 1987Director: John McTiernan*****In the 1980's, there was one go-to guy for action spectacle: John McTiernan. With Predator, his second directing job (Die Hard is the third), he mimics Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien to such a large extent, one has to wonder if that the intention by writers Jim and John Thomas. It's not enough another small group of people are terrorized in a remote area with no hope of help, but the creature again comes from space. The difference? At least these men have weapons.Where Predator excels is in creating an action film with precious little dialogue to explain what is happening on screen. Most of what we get are raised eyebrows, slinking through the jungle or reconnaissance through the trees. No interest in understanding the Predator, to reason with it. Only to survive. It's a 1980's themed film without a doubt for that very reason. Shooting and asking questions later, if at all. But it also makes Predator a very different movie th ... " [More]

"Until the last 20 minutes, I was trying to figure out how Exit Wounds got its title. Some deep play on words like one of the bad guys introduced would be named John Exit? No, it's because of the nature of some key deaths at the end. You think you're in trouble when a pipe pokes you in the back? Not really... not until it plunges it's way through your mid-section and squirts out your belly button because you were falling from a helicopter onto a rooftop. Or a needle inserted into your throat? Not such a big deal when performed at a hospital to a cancer patient. But it does some damage when running face-first into a needle protruding from a wall and having it alter your hairline on the back of your neck.So what else is important about Exit Wounds? Definitely the star-power cameos of Bruce McGill and Bill Duke. These guys bring the combined credibility of Commando, Predator, Action Jackson, Bird on a Wire, Cliffhanger, Timecop, and many episodes of MacGyver. " [More]

"Porcupine, if you put up a pair like that, you need to splain it. My first guess is that you had to help out in a kindergarten class one time and it totally freaked you out? (But no. If you were comparing kindergarten children to predators, like I hoped, you would have put the movies in the opposite order. So I guess this is like Fistful of Dollars and Bronco Billy or Terminator and Junior.)In which case I offer Going My Way and Bad Education.Perspectives on war:Letters from Iwo Jima and We Were SoldiersPaths of Glory and JarheadTimes change:Max and Der Untergang (Downfall)Pan's Labyrinth and L'Auberge Espagnole " [More]

"The idea that the two movies somehow blend together is what i'm interested in. See Capote and Good Night on the same day might be a mistake, espeically if you're seeing them for the first time. i guess i'm interested in the home-brew double feature because it could be a way to get more out of the movies than you could get watching them separately, not less. kind of like combining flavors in a dish. just yesterday the guy working at the deli down the street told Paul and i to try honey on tuna. never would have thought of that.here's an example of a double feature that i think would bring out aspects of each film that wouldn't surface otherwise:Predator and Kindergarten Cop " [More]

"My list is more guilty pleasures as actors, not films. I could probably make Top 5 lists out of each of these people and more... but here goes: 1. Sylvester Stallone: Rocky II, III & IV. I don't include the first because it's a great movie and I am not ashamed of liking it. I didn't include V because it's crap. And I haven't seen Rocky Balboa so I can't say one way or the other. Also Cop Land.2. Arnold Schwarzenegger's 80s (and early 90s) catalog defines guilty pleasure over and over. I hate that I like Twins, Terminator, The Running Man, Total Recall, Predator. However, I will proudly say that I like T2. Now if only T3 had been watchable...3. Keanu Reeves - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey, Matrix: Reloaded/Revolutions (the first wasn't a guilty pleasure in my book), Point Break , Feeling Minnesota, My Own Private Idaho, The Devil's Advocate, The Watcher.I could almost combine 4 - 5 and some of them probably aren't ... "I have not yet seen "The Descent" , but I am intending to! Yes, June! I think that ALL of the movies you listed count as 'Horror/Action'! I call them 'Action/Adventure/Horror&# 39; so that I might fit a few more films under that 'umbrella'! Movies like "Jurassic Park" and "Deliverance" and "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen" ( bet you did not think I could spell that, huh ROBERT? ... Twice, even! ...) I only JUST saw "Alien vs Predator" and I LOVED it! I liked this one BETTER than "Freddy vs Jason"! For a good dose of 'Action/Adventure/Horror&# 39; try Sam Raimi's FIRST movie (!) ... "One of my favorite horror action movies has to be Resident Evil 1 & 2, but after seeing the Descent, that is pretty high up there on my list now too. Let's see, I think Aliens would rank as an action movie as well as Predator, I also loved Alien vs Predator. I don't think Freddy vs. Jason would be considered that much of an action movie but it comes kind of close. I tell you the car chase scenes in Jeepers Creepers were really heart pounding (but I really don't think I would call that an action movie either...but there was quite a bit in it). What are some other action movies that scared you? " [More]

"I vote Independence Day ID:4 GUILTY of being the worst movie ever.I am generally not a fan of UFO movies. I did like the Alien series and Mars Attacks. Both are fair examples of what I enjoy in a drama or comedy UFO movie.I even enjoyed Predator as a drama / comedy and Spaced Invaders was funny.Independence Day had many scenes that I found very distracting as so made the film less enjoyable with each one. Some of the major problems are: The synchronized multi televisions in the broadcast headquarters that carried the Presidents speech when the building had been emptied in panic, who or how would this be done? The apparent complete lack of security at the base, very strange how this ultra top secrete base (not event the President knew of its existence) has everybody from the RV refugee camp running around. The second worst has to be use of the computer “virus” to infect the alien ship computers. This is very unimaginative. I thought the Yodeling in Mars Attacks was very creative, ... " [More]

Directed by a true master of heart-pumping action, John McTiernan, Predator is an entertaining marriage of action and science fiction. This is a honed-down action film without pretense. Thanks to some spine-tingling camera work, the deep rain forest setting comes alive. The innovative use of special effects make this film stand out from the average blood and guts action film. Using a point-of-view technique previously reserved for horror films, Predator gives the viewer a digitized stalking perspective of the ghastly Predator. One of Arnold Schwarznegger's best roles, the film lets him fly some of his patented one-liners, but for the most part he's restrained. The wily supporting cast includes such colorful characters as Bill Duke, Carl Weathers, and Jesse "The Body" Ventura. While not without its structural flaws, the film stands the test of time: a stylish unbridled action film that ranks extremely high in its genre. ~ Mike DiBella, All Movie Guide
