Synopsis
A growing number of would-be parents in the United States have been turning to other countries in search of healthy children for adoption. One such nation is Guatemala, where the number of babies adopted by overseas parents has grown by leaps and bounds since the 1990s. However, while many American feel they are giving a poor child a better life in the land of opportunity through their actions, the feelings of the Guatemalans is a different story -- many parents feel they have been forced to give up their children against their will, and between legal pressure, political influence, and economic leverage, love is hardly the most important factor that brings some children together with their new parents. Filmmaker Patricia Goudvis is an American who has lived on and off in Guatemala for nearly 30 years, and has adopted two children there. Goodbye Baby is a film by Goudvis which looks at many sides of the controversial issue of international adoptions, and asks where these children are truly best off. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
