Directed by Joel Schumacher.
Upon acquiring a mysterious book in which the number 23 seems to take on powerful cosmic significance, a once-sane man gradually becomes obsessed with the idea that the frequently recurring number may in fact hold a deadly secret in this intense mystery-thriller starring Jim Carrey and Virginia Madsen, and directed by Joel Schumacher. Walter Sparrow (Carrey) is a middle-aged dogcatcher whose wife Agatha (Madsen) has bestowed him with an obscure mystery novel detailing the investigation launched by a tough-talking gumshoe named Fingerling (also Carrey) whose every move seems to be overshadowed by the enigmatic eponymous number. After noting a series of alarming parallels shared between the fictional detective and himself, Walter is quickly drawn in to the story as the hard-boiled private investigator murders raven-wigged moll Fabrizia (also Madsen) and pins the crime on her unsuspecting lover (Danny Huston). Back in the real world, fiction seems to merge with reality as Walter and Agatha's close friend Isaac (also Huston) begins to ingratiate himself ever deeper into the couple's relationship and Walter begins experiencing a gruesome series of visions in which he violently murders an unfaithful Agatha. His mind fast descending into a dark and violent whirlwind of madness, Walter enlists the aid of Agatha and the pair's adolescent son Robin (Logan Lerman) in seeking out the author of the mysterious tome and uncovering the sinister truth behind the so-called "23 enigma." ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"I went into this thinking it might be an interesting film about the mystery of the number 23 (thus, the title of the film), perhaps in the vein of the DaVinci Code (the book, that is) or Zodiac. Instead, I had to endure a cliche story about a murder mystery; blah. I was so disappointed in this film, I'm not even going to talk about it - why waste any more time on this crap than I already have? Skip it...big time. " [More]

"If there is a plot, it takes so many leaps that it is hard to follow. Jim Carrey does not play a believable character... he needs to stick to comedy. To cap off a lousy movie, the feel good ending was totally out of character. If you see this one in the video store... hiss and walk away. " [More]

"I don't have any problem with some of Jim Carrey's dramatic work ( Spotless MInd; Man In The Moon... very entertaining ) but I'm left a bit clueless to this choice of script. I really hate thrillers that seem to have all the ingredients to get you engaged in the story and then with the stroke of a bland twist leave you wishing you didn't fall head-first into the story at all. This is one of those films. Not to mention you can never watch it again after that darn twist! The idea of finding numbers in major events and environments is a good plot device and it more than easily carries this film thru the midway mark. But alast the film sucumbs to a cliche plot twist near the finish line and your left feeling like you began watching a hollywood sleeper hit and ended watching a Lifetime movie of the week. You know.... I'd have preferred if JIm, Jeff (Goldblum) and Damon (Wayans) did a sequel to "Earth Girls are Easy!" You know...That wasn't witty...scra ... " [More]

"Ok the movie was a little weak in parts and I couldn't get over Jim Carrey as a dark character. Overall I did like the movie though. It was a little different ( on a memento sort of level) I still have questions that were left unanswered. As a side note did antone else start counting things? 9-11-2001 adds up to 23 as in 9 + 11+2+1 it really isn't hard to find any number in another string of numbers. This movie did get into my head and that's why I'm giving it a decent rating. That and I'm not into scarry movies and this was tollerable for me. " [More]

"the trailer for this movie made it look very promising! i've always enjoyed Jim Carrey, and i think some of his strongest work has been in his relatively serious roles like "The Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine".this movie could have worked. initially it showed potential and the concept was interesting, but in the end the plot was a strange mix between unfocused, predictable, and absurd. "This moving started off pretty good, but the longer I watched it the more it sucked! There were so many good possibilites with this idea and they didn't use any of them. And, quite honestly, I didn't need to see Jim Carrey getting it on every five minutes either. " [More]

"This movie was absolutely horrible in my opinion. The Number 23 spends its whole time trying to find itself and never successfully does so. Parts of the movie reminded me of "Dick Tracey" other scenes to me were reminiscent of Sin City. Part horror, part mystery, part conspiracy, part comedy? The movie was laughable for many reasons, but to me, the fact that it had no direction made me feel silly even watching it. This could have been a good movie if the script had more direction and focus....and if Jim Carrey weren't playing the lead. He still hasn't convinced me that he is anything more than a comedic leading man. He was out of his element in this film. " [More]

The Number 23 would be a much better movie if it weren't about the number 23. That's a problem, considering that the numerological hook is supposed to be its selling point. Jim Carrey plays an animal control officer -- an auspicious start -- who recognizes unmistakable parallels to his own life in a mysterious book he finds in a book store. But when the script tries to make the number 23 the key to it all, things go haywire. As Carrey races around, using bizarre and ungainly mathematical formulas to produce each instance of the number, it's difficult to stifle the laughter. So after the first act, a potentially chilling and atmospheric thriller becomes just another one of director Joel Schumacher's patented misfires. It's tempting to applaud Carrey's first appearance in a thriller as signs of personal growth, but his performance comes unraveled in tune with Fernley Phillips' script, especially when he's playing Fingerling, his gothic alter ego from the novel. In most thrillers, his lunatic ravings would get him nowhere until he could prove their validity -- a classically structured hero's burden. But here, his son is on board the entire time, and his wife (Virginia Madsen) offers only a couple raised eyebrows before she capitulates as well. It's a shame The Number 23 couldn't focus on the eerie existential questions implied by the novel, because there is some creative filmmaking going on here. A particular example involves the breathtaking montage of Walter Sparrow's childhood, in which the camera (with CG assistance) travels deeper and deeper into the frame, as if plunging three dimensionally into a storybook. But when one three-minute sequence is the best reason to recommend The Number 23, it means that number lovers -- and all other viewers -- should look elsewhere for a good dose of the spooks. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
