Directed by Oliver Stone.
Director Oliver Stone once again offers a powerful and provocative story based on real-life events in this drama. Sergeant John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and William J. Jimeno (Michael Pena) were two officers assigned to New York City's Port Authority who were working their beats on a quiet day in early fall when they received an emergency call. The day was September 11, 2001, and McLoughlin and Jimeno were among the policemen who attempted to evacuate the World Trade Center towers after they were struck by airliners piloted by terrorists. Both McLoughlin and Jimeno were inside the fifth building of the World Trade Center when the towers fell, and were two of the last people found alive amidst the wreckage. As McLoughlin and Jimeno struggled to hold on to their lives as rescuers sifted through the rubble, their spouses -- Donna McLoughlin (Maria Bello) and Allison Jimeno (Maggie Gyllenhaal) -- clung to the desperate hope that their husbands would survive and be found. As the McLoughlin and Jimeno families waited for word on the fate of the two men, they watched as a city and a nation came together with strength and compassion in the face of a tragedy. World Trade Center was based on the true story of John McLoughlin and William J. Jimeno, both of whom cooperated with producers in the making of this film. Producer Debra Hill died during production - hence the posthumous credit. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"In response to Karina’s post from yesterday about plot songs, I feel it is necessary and timely to pay tribute today to the best plot song writer since Huey Lewis: Will Smith. From the ’80s on, Smith has provided the world with songs serving as storytelling supplements to his TV show, his movies and even other people’s movies. At times he has even prematurely released songs that could later be applied to movies for which he failed to attach an official plot song. Uh huh. To get us started, here’s one for Hancock. It’s a song released three years ago, but it’s much more relevant now: “Here He Comes” for Hancock The above video is the closest thing I can find to a video for the song, which applies to Smith’s latest movie in three ways. (1) The title is close to the former title of the movie, “Tonight He Comes.” (2) It samples the theme to the Spider-Man TV series, fitting it in with the superhero plot. (3) It works as a big defense against all of the naysayers thinking he’s finally s ... " [More]

"Much has been said about Oliver Stone´s "World Trade Center". It was compared to Paul Greengrass´ "United 93", which debuted back in April, before the public had seen a minute of film. It was roundly criticized because of its director and the history associated with his films. After all, "JFK" was a conspiracy-laden film and "Natural Born Killers" was, perhaps, more violent that it really had to be. Couple that fact this production uses well-known Hollywood actors as opposed to "United 93"´s use of nonactors in every part and the fifth anniversary of that disaster is less than a month away. "World Trade Center" had every reason to be a resounding failure in every way, shape and form. Surprisingly, it´s not. The film tells the story of two Port Authority cops, John McLoughlin (Nicholas Cage) and Will Jemino (Michael Pena), who are trapped in the rubble of the fallen World Trade Center towers. The action alternates between these two men trying to will each ot ... " [More]

"Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts over at the Washington Post are reporting that the Washington premiere of Lions for Lambs was a veritable who's who of Hollywood and DC insiders. In addition to stars Robert Redford, Tom Cruise, and his wife Katie Holmes, DC insiders in attendance included "Dan Snyder, Madeleine Albright, Ted Leonsis, Lynda carter, George Stephanopoulos, David Gregory and a bunch of congressfolk..." events I'm very much looking forward to "Lions for Lambs" and am intrigued by the way Hollywood is interfacing with (and portraying) a post-9/11 world. For many years following the attacks, references to 9/11 or to terrorism were simply not allowed and did not appear in mainstream US cinema. The past couple of years (particularly since the release of World Trade Center and United 93) have seen a growing interest in film that is critical of US foreign policy in the Middle East, and the war on terrorism. My theory on this, and please tell ... " [More]

"When Oliver Stone makes movies of historical value, he tends to exagerate the facts (i.e. JFK, Salvador, Midnight Express). In this film, he completely stays out of delivering negative propaganda on who was responsible and focuses on the ordeal and rescue of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña). The result is a movie that all viewers would be proud of. The film was made with courage and sympathy to the victims. Some viewers may be put off by the intensity of the subject matter, due to the film being too soon to watch. This film is very much needed in this day and age in hopes that the events of September 11th, 2001 are never forgotten. " [More]

"I don't think anybody wants to be the person that gives a movie about two very brave (and very REAL) men a negative grade. I myself wish I didn't have to. But if I told you that I liked or even could recommend Oliver Stone's World Trade Center, I'd be lying. There has to be a line that must be drawn and someone must be made accountable for doing great disservice to a story that needed to be told. And if it has to be me that draws that line, so be it.Before I continue, I think might need to define my stance on real heroes. To use the word "hero" as a noun is the worst kind of cliché I can think of. You're basically taking away the humanity of anyone who does something brave and self-sacrificing. For real people, that word should be used as a verb or a state of mind. The reason I believe this is because you add in probably the most noble part of their act: choice.World Trade Center has already made up its mind how to see its real-life counterparts ... " [More]

"There were times when, sitting in the theater across the street from the WTC site watching a movie about the day that forever changed my life, I literally shook with the effort of trying to control my emotions. This is not an easy film for anyone in the 9/11 community to watch. And it is for that very reason that I am so grateful to Oliver Stone for making it. A film about 9/11 should never be easy to watch. The day itself was horrific beyond words, and millions of people continue to struggle to live with it. One thing that has been a constant source of frustration for me is the media's treatment of it as primarily a political issue, and its failure to accurately cover its aftermath. This movie doesn't sugar-coat the horror, but it doesn't strike a partisan note, either. It merely tells one piece of one of that day's countless stories. And to those of you who say it's "too soon" for a movie to be made about 9/11...With all do respect, do you yourselves l ... " [More]

"We decided that since we were going to be snowed in, we may as well make use of the day by watching as many movies as we could without going crazy. So we started off with World Trade Center.I honestly had high hopes for this one. But I was soooooo dissapointed. It was way too dark, way to depressing and yet while I appreciate everything that the firefighters and police did for us and everyone that day, I really did not see the need to make a movie out of this particular story. I felt like it was a waste of time to make this movie and a waste of my time to watch it. Maybe it was too early to see it.Overall score: D " [More]
