"I want to like Dan in Real Life. Steve Carell and Dane Cook are two of the most hilarious men out there. And anything with Juliette Binoche pretty much get’s my vote. Yet, here’s the thing. It’s supposed to be a romantic comedy and although it has some funny moments, it doesn’t really deliver on the romantic side. I think that I was missing the magnetic connection between Dan (Carell) and Marie (Binoche) that would have keyed me into believing that these two feel in love over the course of a chance meeting at a bookstore. I believe in love at first site, and it just could have been done better (think Romeo and Juliet). The emotional connection just wasn’t powerful enough to carry the movie and convince the audience that both characters were head-over-heels for the other…justifying all the silliness that ensues. Overall, this film is okay. It’s has the happy ending, but it’s missing a bit in-between. " [More]

"Dan in Real Life (2007) is a romantic comedy that is neither romantic nor funny. The movie plays repeatedly on the key note: Dan fell instantly in love with a woman he met at the book store only to drive to his parents’ coastal mansion and find out that the woman is his brother Mitch’s lover. Then we have Dan trying to act natural around the couple, Dan trying to talk to her about boundaries but she is not concerned, Dan tackling her in a game of family football, Dan’s daughter scolding him for flirting, her impressing everyone and Dan alienating everyone, her leaving Mitch and phoning Dan for a rendezvous, the family walking in on the rendezvous, Mitch slugging Dan, and so on. Nor is this mess romantic. The movie tries to tell us that falling in love instantly—or in three days—is romantic but all we see is three days of family conflict and immaturity. The romance probably happens after the mo " [More]

"I am a huge Steve Carell fan. Have been since the Daily Show and will most likely be that way for years to come. Mind you that not everything he touches is gold. While he was amazing in 40 year Old Virgin as the lead, his best roles are those of a supporting type like in Little Miss Sunshine and Anchorman. Then comes Dan in Real Life. Carell plays Dan, a soon to be syndicated writer of an advice column entitled, you guessed it....Dan in Real Life. He lives a real life with real problems and real phobias. However, his real problems are his three daughters that sometimes treat him like dirt and his never ending mourning of his long gone wife. Dan takes his daughters to Rhode Island to have a family reunion and assist in closing the beach house of his parents for the winter. While there, he walks into a book store and into the life of a major love intrest Marie. They have an intense although short affair and arrives home to only find out that the new woman in his life ... " [More]

"Every year I walk into a movie theater at least thirty times and the number of films viewed increases a lot if you include DVDs. Each time a new feature unspools, I am hoping to be swept away, emotionally engaged or otherwise exhilarated. If I'm lucky, one or two films a year will connect with me on such a deep level that I feel completely connected to the people who made it. These experiences are what keep the whole process in motion. At first, I had been generally uninterested in seeing 'Dan in Real Life.' It's not Steve Carell's fault... or wait, maybe it is, since he chose to make 'Evan Almighty.' No, I'll forgive him that one since 'The 40 Year-Old Virgin' was so great. But what a stupid poster for 'Dan in Real Life' - Steve's head on pancakes. Huh? The trailer was not too inspiring, either. But eventually one factor changed the whole equation. Enter Peter Hedges.Hedges is definitely not a household name. He has only one pervi ... " [More]

"In general I did enjoy this movie. Some very funny moments, but I was bothered by the underlying premise: that Dan (Steve Carell) was some sort of sad sack and an overprotective, clueless parent. His two older children are horrible to him without justification. He tries to do the right thing by his brother, and he's good at his column.Well, at least the lovely Juliette Binoche is part of the cast, and it all ends correctly. " [More]

"So, lately, any film I've seen Dane Cook in, I haven't been much of a fan. And I realize that in a previous review I recommended that Dane Cook stick to his stand up, but he did a pretty good job in this film.Steve Carell was my real motivation in seeing this film. That and the movie poster. Advertising is key to any film Dan in Real Life wasn't quite what I was expecting. It's a clean, family, comedy about a widowed man (Carell) who falls in love for the first time since his wife's death. I found it incredibly moving, with comedy in all the right spots. Was it predictable? Of course. Was it entertaining? Absolutely. The cast made me feel like they were actually a real family and that some how I was a part of their family. I was envious most of the time, wishing that my family acted like Dan's did. It did give me the feeling of a movie from last year, The Family Stone. In reality all films can remind us of another one we've seen. A completely original id ... " [More]
