Directed by Michael Polish.
An aspiring astronaut who was forced to forsake his dream of exploring space in order to save the family farm begins building his own personal rocket as a means of reaching the stars in this quirky rural drama starring Billy Bob Thornton. There once was a time when Charlie Farmer (Thornton) seemed like a shoo-in for NASA's esteemed astronaut training program. An Air Force pilot who held a degree in aerospace engineering, Charlie was well on his way to blasting off when a family crisis grounded his celestial aspirations. Of course Charlie's feet may be firmly planted on terra firma these days, but his thoughts are constantly ascending into the clouds and beyond. It's been ten long years since the man who would navigate the stars began tending to the family farm, and during that time, Charlie has dedicated every moment of his spare time to building the rocket that will one day launch him into space. Though his devoted wife Audie (Virginia Madsen), the pair's three children Sunshine, Stanley, and Shepherd, and even his father-in-law Hal (Bruce Dern) all support Charlie in achieving his lifelong goal of becoming the nation's first independent astronaut, a last-minute hitch on the eve before the big launch unexpectedly stalls Charlie's countdown. It seems that Charlie's quest to obtain a substantial amount of high-grade rocket fuel has attracted the attention of not only the F.B.I., but the C.I.A., the F.A.A., and the United States military as well. Now, as the powers that be attempt to ground Charlie, citing concerns for civilian safety, a media frenzy descends upon the once quiet farm as the reluctant renegade hero vows to show his children just how far one's courage and willingness to pursue one's own ideals can get them when they refuse to give up hope. Northfork writing/directing duo Mark and Michael Polish team to tell the tale of a man considered an oddity by his neighbors, a criminal by the government, and an inspiration by the media and the people. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Ok, so the first one was probably The Astonaut Farmer, but I don't know what Joe Don or Tommy Lee had to do with anything. But that must be the one with the rediculous villain in the middleThen School for ScoundrelsThen I guess The Ice HarvestBut my favorite is Bad SantaWell actually, I haven't seen the other ones " [More]

"In the whimsical fable The Astronaut Farmer, Billy Bob Thornton is so good, so charming and so inspired by the role of Charlie Farmer, a stubborn Texas cowboy who builds his own spaceship in his barn and launches it into outer space, that he almost makes you believe in Tinker Bell, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Charlie didn’t make it to NASA, but his lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut never died. Nobody in town thinks he’s tightly wrapped except his loyal, supportive and long-suffering wife Audie (Virginia Madsen again, who also skyrocketed into space after Sideways), his two little daughters and the 15-year-old son he drags out of school to be his flight commander, operating out of mission control in the hayloft. Charlie’s credit rating is shot, the bank is foreclosing the mortgage on his 352-acre ranch, and the judge orders a psychiatric exam. But it’s his order for 10,000 pounds of illegal rocket fuel that, thanks to the Patriot Act, brings the F ... " [More]

"http://www.movie-list.com/revi ews.php?id=astronautfarmerThe review above really sums it up for me...but I would give it 5 stars...what an amazing movie! The Astronaut Farmer reminds me of movies I grew up on and loved by Speilberg and Lucas in the '70s and '80s...hopeful, enchanting...and fun!Bily Bob Thornton gives one of his best performances ever and Virginia Madsen is perfect as his wife who holds the family together while they dream this incredible dream of launching a rocket...but she's not afraid to lay down the law either. Max Thieriot plays their son...you may have seen him in Catch That Kid...he is a real star of tomorrow. The little girls in the movie are totally adorable and natural and from the credits they must be the filmmakers the Polish Bros. own daughters. What a great cast. This is one of those gems you don't want to miss...the cinematography, acting and score are all top notch...they don't make them like this anymore! " [More]

After making a bold cinematic debut (Twin Falls Idaho), writer-directors Mark and Michael Polish utterly failed to connect with audiences in their next two attempts, Jackpot and Northfork. Their first mainstream release, The Astronaut Farmer, continues that losing streak, even as they bend over backwards trying to be more accessible. The film has a basic dopiness factor to overcome, with a poster featuring a space-suited Billy Bob Thornton riding a horse, like he might be trying his hand at lunar agriculture. And then there's the problem of the title -- he's a farmer, whose name is Farmer, but he's also an astronaut, or would have been, and might be again. But what's really wrong with The Astronaut Farmer is much simpler: The villains are right, and the hero is wrong. On the face of it, Charles Farmer's dream to launch his homemade rocket (with his 15-year-old son at mission control!) seems like one of those things the audience should root for. The writer-directors have filled Farmer's hometown with likable folks who've known each other for years, painted the FAA bigwigs as stern killjoys -- and, for good measure, made them all equally naïve and unbelievable. This doesn't change the fact that there are dozens of good reasons amateur rocket launching is frowned upon by the government. In fact, Thornton's character illustrates several of them, nearly killing hundreds of people on one occasion, nearly bankrupting his family on several others, all so he can briefly fulfill his vainglorious desire to experience space travel. But Farmer is not merely capable of large-scale blunders -- he also throws a brick through a bank window, like a surly teenager. All of this makes the Polishes seem foolish for trying to put a lump in our throats over this man who won't -- but should -- let his dream die. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
