Directed by Luc Picard
Louis Tremblay (Luc Picard) is a repo man who’s paid to threaten people with violence when they owe money to loan sharks. It’s been a good career which has served him well up until now, but at 40 years old, he’s become weary of the stress caused by his job and longs to follow a dream he’s had since childhood: to become an actor. Even though he’s a tough enforcer, he still has the audacity to want to get in touch with his emotional side, something he can’t share with his waitress girlfriend Suzie (Suzanne Clement) for fear of ridicule. But Suzie meanwhile has a secret of her own — she’s pregnant and can't bring herself to break the news to Louis because she doesn’t approve of his “day job.” Thanks to a cousin who works for a production house, Louis finally gets his big break to try out for a very special role in a film. In anticipation of his big audition, he chooses a heart-tugging monologue written as a man's final message to his two-year-old son that he practices in secrecy. With his life at a turning point, things seem to be looking up for Louis and Suzie. But, tragically, Louis' past catches up with him and his audition monologue gains a new urgency and meaning. Audition, which won the Grand Prize at the new Festival de Films de Montréal this year, is a rich tableau of a film with angry strokes alongside dreamily delicate touches. There are even some clear and funny nods to Pulp Fiction. Already one of Canada’s most respected actors, Luc Picard has now distinguished himself as a most talented writer/director to boot.
