A one-time freelance hitman who was just attempting to turn his life around is forced to keep his heart pumping when his vengeful former employers inject him with a lethal poison that will permanently stop his ticker if his pulse sinks beneath an active rate in a non-stop urban action extravaganza starring Jason Statham and Amy Smart. Chev Chelios (Statham) was one of the most skilled assassins in the West Coast crime syndicate. When he hung up his guns in the middle of a job to run off with his new girlfriend Eve (Smart), however, the man who was once the hunter now becomes the hunted. Awakened from his slumber by a telephone call informing him of his precarious situation, Chelios soon discovers that the only way to save Eve from certain death at the hands of his nemesis is to stay two steps ahead of his killers, keep his heart-rate high enough to stay alive, and blast through the streets of Los Angeles in search of an antidote. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"[quote user="SkyPilot"] Sharks I have known love Speed 2: Cruise Control [/quote] Yeah, I've heard that about sharks. I used to have a gremlin that loved to watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High . He had a thing for Phoebe Cates. He would always say, "Rewind it & let's watch it again!!" And I would say, "Bill, (that was his name) you're sooo 80's. This is a dvd, you don't have to rewind, I can start it from any scene." He was like, "Pool scene! Pool scene!" and I would be like "Bill, you're just too much." I tried turning him on to other Phoebe Cates movies, Drop Dead Fred, Princess Caraboo, but he never really got very excited about anything as much as he did for Fast Times. And that's the story of how George W Bush won the election. " [More]

"Every week or so you’ll hear about a video game being adapted for the big screen, especially with the gaming industry raking it in hand over fist these days. In the past year alone studios have touted the announcements of deals for game-based movies like World of Warcraft, Halo, and Metal Gear Solid. But what about the movies that already seem like video games? There are a fair share of flicks that feature everything from gimmicky camera styles to plotlines that seem like they were ripped right out of the latest console bestseller and plunked into multiplexes. Check out the list below and watch these video game movies that aren’t video game movies. 1. Elephant (2003): This Gus Van Sant film was inspired by the Columbine school shooters, who were in turn supposedly inspired by video games Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. The movie is made up of extremely long tracking shots, filmed just behind the character the story is currently following. By design, this makes the film look like a thirdp ... " [More]

"Jason Statham is not a name that exactly inspires confidence in moveigoers. He was director Guy Ritchie’s lapdog for “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch,” before boxing himself in to roles that played up his martial-arts prowess, squelching any dramatic potential that nuanced his performances.Starring in a string of empty-calorie cinematic Twinkies (“The Transporter” films, “Chaos,” “War” and “Crank” were all designed solely to accentuate his pugnacious proclivities) only kept him out of the direct-to-video purgatory that befell fellow fighters Steven Segal and Jean-Claude Van Damme. He’s often dismissed as the British version of Bruce Willis (balding, gruff on-screen demeanor, characters of few words and a cupboard filled with cans of whoop-ass), but he has the potential to bring on more than brawn to his roles. His followers may be small, but they are loyal, and he has staked his claim ... "Jason Statham plays a character who is almost the diametric opposite of his character in the Transporter movies or, said differently, if the character in the Transporter movies was a drugged-out bad guy, he would be the protagonist of Crank. Ultimately, I enjoyed Crank, but I did not love it. The director made some odd camera choices (especially right at the beginning of the movie) that I didn't enjoy. Once the action got going (very over the top) the movie was a lot of fun. Plus, it had one of the most original sex scenes in recent memory. Recommended only for those who like quirky, off-beat humor mixed with violence. " [More]

"For a balls-out action film...it's not that bad. Actually, it's pretty good. It's tailor-made for the video game loving crowd, for instance, Chev keeps getting "power ups" (like snorting coke, natch) throughout the film to finish his goal. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor keeps things appropriately light with some wacky humor, and you can see you're not suppose to take this film seriously. But now that I've seen it once, the thrill is gone (although Amy Smart in her skivvies is ALWAYS thrilling) and the chances of my seeing this again are drastically diminished. " [More]

"I admit, I'm getting a little tired of plotless action movies just for the sake of the action, which at some point always try to introduce some "drama" into it in an effort to make people take them seriously. This movie, however, actually surprised me in a pleasant way. It doesn't make any attempt to take itself serious and it's all about the action. I'm the kind of person who has a tendency to pay attention to the story first and the rest later, but you really can't do that with this movie - and that's perfectly ok. After you accept this fact, it's actually a very entertaining and fun movie. When I started watching it I was, at first, completely bewildered. I had never heard of it so I didn't know what to expect. I was almost too dumbfounded by the sheer absurdity of some scenes to appreciate it, but this movie is so outrageous that those scenes are actually part of its charm. Some things were really unexpected and above all, really, re ... " [More]

"Yup, that about sums it up.  If you're looking for a picture that will have your girlfriend saying "You know, maybe I do like action films." This ain't it.  This movie is aimed directly at the short-attentioned-male-action- star-wannabe's that have made the video game industry a multi-billion dollar gambit.  You can't watch this movie with the hope of enjoying a well told story, but you can watch it with the hope of seeing some plain old testosterone-based fun and there's nothing wrong with that.  Statham does  a great job of keeping a sketchy plot believable.  Hats off to Dwight Yoakam. (that's not something you hear everyday) His portrayal of  a Hunter S. Thompson-esque doctor was believable and fun to watch.  Adam Biddle (cinematographer) brings a visual style that sets this picture apart from other movies of this ilk.  Aside from a few clunky bits (hardly the deathnail for this genre) Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have put together a kickass ... "By Tricia Olszewski "On 9/11, more people died of AIDS than died of violence.” That’s just one of the startling revelations in Nobelity, a documentary written and directed by Turk Pipkin. Pipkin, a former Night Court scribe, begins the movie talking about his daughters and about how a parent’s job is to protect them during the day and reassure them at night. “But is everything going to be OK?” he asks himself in voice-over. “Are we going to leave a better world for future generations, or is this going to be the time when it all started to unravel?” According to the rather alarming Nobelity, the latter is more likely to be true. Pipkin spent a year seeking out the inconvenient truth from nine Nobel Prize winners about subjects such as the environment, nuclear weapons, hunger, poverty, and the general divisiveness that pits global citizens against one another. The most popular conclusion that is drawn is one that most of us probably already ... " [More]

The world needs a movie like Crank. Its detractors will preach the negatives of embracing video-game logic and ADD style on the big screen, but they're missing the fact that this movie might just be the breath of fresh air that was sorely needed in the action film world. While the Michael Bays and Jerry Bruckheimers of Hollywood inflate their budgets and lengths to give them that bloated franchise pedigree, here comes a 15-million-dollar underdog that dares to entertain its audience throughout every single minute of its brisk 88-minute running time. Sure, the flick was tailored for the young male video-game crowd, but there are certainly others who will slurp up this tasty concoction just as much. When it comes down to it, if viewers are sold on the premise, they'll probably be sold on the final product. Directing duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor throw buckets of style at the wall that somehow gel into a package not unlike Wayne Kramer's gonzo crime thriller from the same year, Running Scared. Again, many viewers won't have the taste for such excessive salad dressing in their cinema, but this caffeinated meal would not be the same without it -- so in other words, "squares" stay far away. Star Jason Statham cleverly picked this project to get back to the '70s style of on-the-run filmmaking, with little to no CG or wirework to muddy it up -- and it paid off. Crank is bold, wild, stupid, and fun -- living up to expectations for those who are tired of conventions and just want their films to take off at 100 mph and not stop until the credits roll. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
