Directed by David Slade.
Hard Candy director David Slade took the helm for this adaptation of Steve Niles' terrifying comic-book series of the same name. In Barrow, AK, one night can last an eternity. One month every year, this town is plunged into darkness for 30 days due to its location on the far north of the Arctic Circle. While extended periods of darkness are something that the locals have become accustomed to, this year something sinister is about to emerge from the long and unforgiving night. As a maniacal horde of vampires assume control of the city streets and commence to freely feasting on the terrified citizens, the local sheriff (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George), and a small but resilient band of survivors will be forced to choose between saving themselves or helping the few remaining members of their community survive the blood-soaked siege. Original comic creator Niles collaborated with screenwriters Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson to pen a film produced under Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures banner. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"One wonders why the vampires didn't think of it before: If you're a bloodsucker, the Arctic Circle is really the place to be. Some places have (as you can guess from the title) thirty days of night, meaning that our undead friends can spend an unlimited amount of time doing what vampires do. This is a great premise for a movie, but the end result is merely mediocre. The opening of the film is very strong, as it presents effectively a part of the United States that we rarely see on screen- the extreme northern parts of Alaska. The movie introduces us to a wide vary of semi-diverse characters led by a policeman named Eben (Josh Hartnett) and his estranged wife Stella (Melissa George). There is also a old policewoman dying from cancer, her unusually normal teenage grandson, an Inuit guy mourning the death of his wife and child, and strong, husky woodsman. When the vampires move in however, the drama and indeed, the story (as my literary friend Tracey observed) stops ... " [More]

"No sunlight for a month. Cut off from the rest of the world. Below freezing temperature. Philosophically minded, bloodthirsty vampires? In 30 Days of Night, the forces that be sure are completely against the isolated town of Barrow that has found itself directly in the path of a wandering tribe of vampires. With stunning visuals that equal the incredible look of the comic book in which it was adapted and fantastically gory effects on par with Evil Dead, the sporadic plot holes and terribly cliched dialogue are easily forgiven. "OMFG!!!!! I think everyone should run out and get this movie. If you cant afford it steal it. I loved what they did to the vampire in this movie. ( they made them scarry again.) And the script was great, The things that the characters go through is such a mindfucker. It was a tense ride from start to finish but it has one of the best endings in a vampire movie ever. At last, Ghost House did a horror movie right. Did anyone else like this movie, or am i singing its praises alone? " [More]

"This is not your fluffy shirted romantic, deep voiced, Dracula that all the women cant resist. This is a beast from Hell that is here for one reason...To feed. A terrifying story about being issolated, hungry, frozen, and hunted. The new vampires speak this weird language and make these horrifying guteral screeches to announce they have found another human. And then they dive in like like a wild animal. Instead of leaving two dots on your neck they leave a murder scene in the snow. Fans of horror will love this one. " [More]

"The movie was awesome.Cinema audiences should be given lessons in how to behave during a screening. For those of you who didn’t read the comics ( and if that includes you, then you should - NOW) The basic premise is, in the northern-most town in the US, (Barrow, Alaska) there is no daylight for 30 days. Obviously this is somewhat of a vampiric dream, what with all of that food and non of the pesky undead-threatening daylight, so they move in to slaughter the towns remaining residents. Head vampire gets wind of this, and becomes annoyed - turns out the way vampires have managed to stay around all this time, is convincing us that they don’t exist - it is therefore imperative that no-one survive to tell the tale of what really happened. It’s incredibly simple as a story, and one that’s so obvious when you hear it, you wonder why no-one had used it before. (There was a giant debate about this on AV club, apparently there may have been a similar idea in a Twilight ... " [More]

"Badass! It was obvious this movie was going to be awesome...it would of been difficult for a story like this to be bad.First of all Josh Hartnett i thought did a great job with this role; definitely one of his better roles. Its a very creepy, jump out, in your face type of horror flick and those are great! Its alot better then a remake, or a pg 13 horror film. Not much to say about it; very worth your time if your into horror movies; this by far is one of the better horror movies to come out this year and on top of all of that; the special effects make-up and gore for this movie....is absolutely amazing. I would go as far as to say that this has probably the best looking special effects ive ever seen. It looks amazingly real.Great stuff GO SEE IT! " [More]

"I say this movie is one of the best vampire movies ever made because of it's orginality but there's still something missing from it. Some of the characters seem stale and parts of the movie are slow and could of been condensed but all in all it's just an average movie. " [More]

"I'll admit, it's one of the better vampire films to come around lately and it's a very (VERY) welcome move away from the erotic, romance nonsense that I am so damn sick of people doing to vampires--especially with book publishing (die paranormal romance, die!).The vampires looked great and they were great expressions of something truly evil and this is why I felt so cheated--where were they for much of the film? We got a quick hint at their mythology and that was all--this was so interesting, why not give us a little more. Why all the quick cut-away shots when I was expecting some brutality? They had a scene featuring a totally pimped out tractor of some sort and it became a death machine and I wanted some longer shots--hey, that's just me.In short, I'll watch it again as I am sure there will be a director's cut on DVD, but I'm not going to buy it. If you want to explore this exact story, done right, then please check out Steve Niles' wonderful gra ... " [More]
