Directed by Jared Hess.
Jared Hess (of Napoleon Dynamite fame) directs this bizarre comedy starring Jack Black as Nacho, a young man who works as a cook in the Mexican monastery where he was raised. When the institution faces a financial crisis, Nacho decides that he must come to the aid of the house of God (as well as the beautiful young nun who has recently joined the order) by competing in the local Lucha Libre tournament. Donning a spandex outfit, mask, and cape, Nacho becomes a hero for the ages -- but can he win the heart of a woman of the cloth? ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

"During my last day in Newfoundland, we had taken the time to watch a particular film. The previous nights before, we went to Blockbuster to rent a movie. We found Nacho Libre. We haven’t watched it before, so we thought it would be a good movie seeing as it stars Jack Black. They didn’t have any in stock when we asked for it, so we went back again when they restocked and got it for free. At the very last minute, I had discovered that a change in my flight back was not a mere change of seats as I had assumed, but a change of departure time. It was not early morning as planned, but late afternoon. So, with our newly found time together, we enjoyed our final hours watching the first episodes of Arrested Development and our free rental. Nacho: I’m a little concerned right now. About… your salvation and stuff. How come you have not been baptized? Esqueleto: Because I never got around to it ok? I dunno why you always have to be judging me because I only believe in science. Jack Black i ... " [More]

"There are times when I begin to think we, as Americans are just a stupid as the rest of the world say we are. Those times involve election years, any reality television show, and Jered Hess movies. I HATED Napoleon Dynamite and will still do so to my dying day. And that movie was just stupid. Nacho Libre isn't just stupid, but it's ugly and vicious. Nacho (Jack Black) is a cook for a Mexican mission where everyone talks in a Mexican-stilted English ("What ees theees!"), and sometimes talks in Spanish when they feel like it. The food is so bad that toast is a delicacy. And priests hit on novices at will. But Nacho has the dream of becoming a Luchador wrestler (I think only because that means he can wear stretchy pants and a mask). In a street thief, he finds a partner, and the two of them start hitting the canvas. But they're so bad, audiences like seeing them get pummeled to a pulp. But they paid for their time. The film builds up to a fight with the best wres ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski “Fat guy in a little coat”: Extend that Chris Farley gag—the quote is all you need to know to picture it—to about 100 minutes and you’ve pretty much got Nacho Libre. Director Jared Hess’ follow-up to Napoleon Dynamite relies heavily on the sight of short, tubby Jack Black in not only a mustache, a ’70s perm, and those ridiculously arched eyebrows, but also flesh-spilling spandex. So clearly, Nacho is no one-dimensional comedy. OK, you might not laugh every time the incredibly game Black severely tests his wardrobe playing Ignacio/Nacho, an offensively accented priest in charge of cooking at a Mexican orphanage. But with the actor’s mania tamed and the director’s screenplay, co-written with his wife, Jerusha Hess, and longtime Black collaborator Mike White (School of Rock and, oops, Orange County), slipping in bits of desert-dry humor among all the broad silliness, there’s more than meets the eyeful. "This movie is so complexly funny - one of those where you watch it with wrinkled brow and occasional guffaws. Then when you're alone and it's quiet, the film sneaks back into your brain so that you can mull it over. That's right, it's movie cud at its finest. If you watch it once, you must watch it at least a couple more times. Then the funny lines start taking over your brain. You find yourself repeating things with a fake hispanic accent like, "I'm not leesning to yu, yur crasey!" You even find yourself trying to scrunch up your face like Skeletor to say things like, "I hate orphans, I hate awl the orphans en the hole werrrrld!" " [More]

"A couple of years ago my son introduced me to a movie that I probably would never have discovered on my own. It was odd, unconventional, quirky, and made me laugh harder than I have laughed at any movie in a long time. That was 'Napoleon Dynamite'. I've tried introducing it to others with glowing enthusiasm, but apparently it is an acquired taste, you either get it or you don't get it. I suppose this next movie will have the same reaction from people. So I looked forward to seeing Jared Hess' next project with eagerness and a touch of trepidation. Trepidation because of the presence of Jack Black, one of a long line of 'over the top' funnymen that populate the movie screens these days like so many overripe pimples. I'd seen 'High Fidelity', I'd seen 'School of Rock' and his persona just left me flat. I was pleasantly surprised that the director is one of those who know how to rein in their 'comedy superstar' and actually ... " [More]

"I'm hearing a lot of negativity in the world concerning this poor little movie and it's way out of proportion (IMO). Nacho Libre is flat out funny if you like your comedies full of absurd, ridiculous moments. This is not the movie for you if you take yourself too seriously or think that every comedy must have a well developed story. Perhaps it is not for Ebert or Roeper or Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal but what do these men know about the absurd anyway? Are these critics funny guys? Have you ever seen one of them laugh? Look, I'm not saying this is a timeless classic I'm just saying it will make you laugh -- a lot. Let's be nice to this sweet little, juvenile movie. It's pretty damn funny. P.S. - This movie was directed by the same guy who did Napoleon Dynamite which is a much more observationally astute comedy but a less funny one. It's not that I didn't understand the humor in N.D., it just didn't make me laugh very much. Nacho is a funnier film. Sli ... " [More]

is neutral about it.
Nacho Libre is a great movie as long as you're into its own twisted little sense of humor. A sizable but distinct niche of people will dig it -- the only trick is figuring out if you're one of them -- so here is a brief guide to determine if you should keep reading. You will like Nacho Libre if: you enjoy Napoleon Dynamite-brand comedy, where there's rarely a clear punch line, things are just weirdly familiar, subtly bizarre, or unapologetically silly; you find inane food, members of the clergy, or Lucha Libre to be inherently funny; or you're a fan of Jack Black, in particular his melodramatic facial expressions, impromptu power-rock ballads, and scatological humor. If you answered yes to any of the above questions, feel free to continue reading the review, as this applies to you. Nacho Libre is a total and hysterical success in the realm of absurd humor. Director Jared Hess proves that the surprise success of his first film, Napoleon Dynamite, wasn't based on the happenstance of his tiny budget and cast of college classmates and unknowns. Nacho Libre expands his horizons with the money to take his characters to new places, but the humor is just as unnameable and awesome. Most of the time he just lets his leading man riff through the delivery, as Black's over-the-top expressions, intonations, and Mexican accent (which morphs into Italian in moments of relishing self-parody) are what seal the deal on much of the humor. While Napoleon Dynamite made fun of its clueless protagonist almost to the point of maliciousness, Nacho prompts laughter with far less spite, dragging real-world rules and values into the picture. Hess has also refined his own directional style with this project; it's something like Wes Anderson meets the Farrelly Brothers -- only drunk. It might be a little left-field for some, but for the rest of us, comedy doesn't get much better. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
