"Although I am a die-hard Beatles fan, I've often felt that there is an annoying aspect to the fandom of John Lennon. As a solo artist, his music (although at times brilliant) placed a distant third in terms of quality after Paul McCartney and George Harrison, and his fans have an annoying tendency to treat Lennon as some kind of deep thinker or even a saint for his political beliefs and efforts towards world peace. I therefore expected the documentary The U.S. vs. John Lennon to be little more than holographic portrait, especially considering the fact that it was approved by Lennon's estate, held in the trust of his widow, Yoko Ono (who also appears in the film). But whatever personal failings Lennon may have had (he abandoned his first son, Julian, simply because he couldn't find the time to be a father), the documentary gives evidence that Lennon did have some real moments of bravery and altruism. The centerpiece of the film is an amazing bit of information- the Ni ... " [More]

I consider myself something of an expert on the Fab Four and all of their trials and tribulations, even though I wasn't alive during their heydey. I've always liked their music, but in high school, when it suddenly became "ok" or even "cool" to admit any affinity for a band that my parents listened to, I started to become more than simply interested in the Lads from Liverpool. Not only did I collect all of their ... " [More]

"Of the innumerable great quotes that can be attributed to John Lennon (yes, my favorite Beatle), this has always been my favorite; it's also the slogan for this movie. I am fortunate enough to get to go to a fair amount of free movie previews and I actually got a free t-shirt promoting this movie, which has that very quote on the front. The movie is very timely in the way that it shows how far a paranoic, war-mongering government will go to justify their actions and also how far they will go to demonize anyone who dares to speak out against them. That said, I'll shut up - just see this film... " [More]
