Filmmakers David Leaf and John Scheinfeld offer a compelling look at the efforts of the United States government to silence one of rock & roll's most outspoken war critics in this documentary detailing the Vietnam-era struggle between the Richard Nixon administration and iconic peace activist John Lennon. The Vietnam War was raging and the nightly news was filled with stories of failed offensives and massacred U.S. troops. As anti-war protests back home gained momentum, it was the hopeful voice of former Beatle Lennon that served to perfectly encapsulate the frustrations felt by many citizens that the U.S. had gotten caught up in an quagmire from which there was seemingly no end in sight. There's a high price to be paid for standing strong in your beliefs and openly criticizing the ruling elite, though, and now, through interviews with those who knew him best and revealing glimpses into an era where all hope seemed lost, filmmakers finally uncover the truth behind the Nixon administration's highly classified efforts to isolate and eventually deport the man whose powerful words threatened to actually make sense in a world slowly suffocated by the grip of insanity. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Although I am a die-hard Beatles fan, I've often felt that there is an annoying aspect to the fandom of John Lennon. As a solo artist, his music (although at times brilliant) placed a distant third in terms of quality after Paul McCartney and George Harrison, and his fans have an annoying tendency to treat Lennon as some kind of deep thinker or even a saint for his political beliefs and efforts towards world peace. I therefore expected the documentary The U.S. vs. John Lennon to be little more than holographic portrait, especially considering the fact that it was approved by Lennon's estate, held in the trust of his widow, Yoko Ono (who also appears in the film). But whatever personal failings Lennon may have had (he abandoned his first son, Julian, simply because he couldn't find the time to be a father), the documentary gives evidence that Lennon did have some real moments of bravery and altruism. The centerpiece of the film is an amazing bit of information- the Ni ... " [More]

"The next film in my Netflix queue was a documentary I had heard only a little about, but the subject matter immediately appealed to me, and I knew I just had to watch it. This movie was also on my 2006 Movies I'm Dying to See Spout list and happens to be the last of those I've come around to viewing. If you haven't ascertained, through either previous blog entries or conversations in various groups, that of all my fanatic obsessions, the greatest one, even greater than Star Wars and Harry Potter, is my obsession with the Beatles. I consider myself something of an expert on the Fab Four and all of their trials and tribulations, even though I wasn't alive during their heydey. I've always liked their music, but in high school, when it suddenly became "ok" or even "cool" to admit any affinity for a band that my parents listened to, I started to become more than simply interested in the Lads from Liverpool. Not only did I collect all of their ... " [More]

"very good documentary, although nothing really very surprising about the government conspiracy or whatever. i saw "Imagine" not too long ago on TV too and with that and this film it finally hit me why JL was such a big deal and why he was so important. he would have been special even if he wasn't a Beatle. interesting historically too, with news footage from that time that is very rarely seen. highly recommended. u.s. versus john lennon " [More]

"Of the innumerable great quotes that can be attributed to John Lennon (yes, my favorite Beatle), this has always been my favorite; it's also the slogan for this movie. I am fortunate enough to get to go to a fair amount of free movie previews and I actually got a free t-shirt promoting this movie, which has that very quote on the front. The movie is very timely in the way that it shows how far a paranoic, war-mongering government will go to justify their actions and also how far they will go to demonize anyone who dares to speak out against them. That said, I'll shut up - just see this film... " [More]
