Directed by Tom Shadyac.
40-Year-Old Virgin star Steve Carell reprises his role as preening newscaster Evan Baxter in this heavenly sequel to the 2003 Jim Carrey comedy hit. Shortly after television anchorman-turned-U.S. congressman Evan Baxter (Carell) relocates his family from Buffalo to Northern Virginia, God (Morgan Freeman) reveals to him that a devastating flood is coming and the planet is about to be cleansed once again. Later, when Baxter accepts the responsibility of building a great ark and his rapidly changing physical appearance begins to draw media attention, his skeptical family attempts to discern if his actions are driven by delusion or divine intervention. John Goodman, Wanda Sykes, Jonah Hill, and Molly Shannon co-star in a divine comedy of truly epic proportions. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Liked: Ok, I like Steve Carell's understated physical delivery.Disliked: Practically everything else. Verdict: It is not funny, it is not heartwarming, and I am struggling to find a point. God spends time and effort to force one poor schmuck to build an Ark, so that the residents of his town can survive a flood, which God in advance knew would happen? That's the best plan that God came up with? And that somehow illustrates the notion that changing the world takes one act of random kindness at a time? The plot of Evan Almighty is beyond ridiculous, and nothing makes up for it. " [More]

"It’s bad enough that Hollywood has to remake all of my childhood memories (yes, I admit my childhood memories are mostly TV shows and movies from the ’70s and ’80s). But when they go and use CGI rather than actors and completely alter the way I remember things (man, that sucked how the Who’s the Boss movie featured a computer generated Mona), I just get so upset I could rant on a blog. So, imagine my relief when I saw this official photo from the set of Universal’s Land of the Lost in today’s USA Today. Yes, those Sleestak look just as you remember. Only darker, more detailed, and a little (just a little) less like a costume with a human inside. But as much as I’d like to salute director Brad Silberling both for respecting my childhood and for shitting on CGI (which is still just too lazy a tool these days), the choice seems mostly to do with retaining the show’s cheesiness. Anthony Breznican writes for USA Today: In the ’70s TV show, they were guys in lime-green pajamas — and loo ... " [More]

"I thought the movie was funny but at times very slow. I was a little confused going in on how the Writers were going to make this into a comedy. Good Job ! I say on making this movie at least a little funny but it coul have been a lot better. When you have an actor like Steve Carell you have to take full advantage of his talent and this is something this movie did not do. Overall. I am going to buy it for the collection. CJSBAD2 " [More]

"I see now the true meaning behind that word. No, I haven't "looked it up"--not what it means today nor how it ended up meaning that--but I would say that it means/has-meant/wioll-ben-habe n-mennenging "a story/retelling that serves as an example" ... kind of a 'the way stuff is/was/might-be'.Evan Almighty--like Bruce Almighty before it (only a prequel in the same sense as Vince McMahon is my ancestor)--serves as a Testament ... in this case, a reminder that God's work is here for us to pick up IF WE'RE READY FOR IT.I'm seeing that Spout-ers--on average--aren't READY FOR IT. That's something I've noticed about the last few movies I've reviewed here---the reviewers don't understand that THE VIEWER makes the movie good or -bad! "I actually was very, very surprised by this movie (having expected more of a Bruce almighty remake) I was pleasantly greeted by an adorable little family film... it was exciting and fun, the story kept moving. Although it wasn’t an adult focused movie (like bruce almighty was) is was much more family friendly. I enjoyed the light humor and the quite comical “dancing” credits. All in all, a 10 out of 10. "***Apparently resigned to the idea that Evan Almighty can never recoup its costs and is basically the biggest tax write-off ever, Universal has scrapped plans to release the picture in Japan. The studio declined to state a specific reason, but Variety speculates that Steve Carell's lack of international star power might be part of the problem. Oh, and the fact that Americans didn't want to see it either. ***Consumer home video spending is down almost five percent, and studios are blaming themselves for releasing so much crap during the first half of the year. ***Sony, which bought online video portal Grouper last year, has changed the site's name to Crackle as part of an effort to re-brand the property as a vehicle for Sony-produced content, as well as a launching pad for new video stars. Contests in place at launch tempt user participation by offering pitch meetings with Sony execs as a grand prize--as if kids who are getting millions of page views on YouTube would give it all ... "If there are two types of movies that really annoy me, they are cute family movies where parents are witless and the kids seem to rule the roost. The other type of movie is the condescending religious film that might get the story right, but loose the message altogether. I am on record for saying that there are not enough “good” family movies out there, not to mention religious movies that prefer to embrace rather than preach. I didn’t expect much going into Evan Almighty, considering that I was on the fence with Bruce Almighty (which I thought was a little too raunchy to be insightful, but well-meaning all the same). But I can honestly say that this is one sequel that outdoes to original big-time by merely finding its niche in family comedy. While it teeters VERY close to both types of movies I hate, it adjusts itself into a rather satisfactory third act.The movie revolved around Evan Baxter (Steve Carell), who if you don’t remember was Bruce’s rival ... The family comedy Evan Almighty has plenty going for it. Unfortunately, you probably won't notice its finer points if you're engulfed in crippling disappointment over everything the film is not. Will you be one of the sad and disgusted masses, or will you be free of the heavy, burdensome chains of bitterness brought about by dashed expectations? With a few simple questions, you can find out for yourself. It all comes down to what exactly made you want to watch this movie in the first place. One possibility is A) you saw Bruce Almighty, which was mostly an excuse to let Jim Carrey work his comedic schtick, and you figured the sequel would likewise serve as a showcase for star Steve Carell's own brand of comedic stylings. Another less likely possibility is B) You thought the idea of a cute, fantasy-driven, just-barely-non-denominational religious story with simplified messages about showing kindness and protecting the environment sounded like a fine time. If choice A) describes your motivation to see Evan Almighty, you're in trouble. There's almost no smart, witty, or sarcastic humor in this movie; most of the jokes are based on people falling over or getting pooped on. Carell is capable of feats of hilarity far greater than this, which is why it's so tragic. Additionally, the film also features appearances by Jonah Hill, Molly Shannon, Ed Helms, and Wanda Sykes -- fantastically gifted comedians, none of whom get the chance to be one tenth as funny as we know they can be. That's partly because they're not given good jokes, let alone the chance to improv, but it's also because this movie just isn't meant to be a belly-laughing comedy. The humor in Evan Almighty takes a back seat to the story itself, a "what if" about a man discovering faith and figuring out his priorities. Unfortunately, the depth of that story doesn't exactly resemble flood waters, so it can come off as hokey and dumb. That wouldn't be such a problem for most viewers if the film delivered the irony and wit that adults need to accept a sappy story that reduces the most destructive act of the Old Testament God to mainstream family fare. But the thing is, the movie is still really sweet, and as side-steppingly uncomplicated as the moral is, it's still a good one -- especially for tweens and young kids, who won't have a problem laughing at the poop and pratfalls. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
