"Over the weekend, Wanted had a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.com. It’s since gone down to 81% (at the time of this writing — and with top critics it’s down to 67%), though that’s still pretty good for a movie that initially looked like just another Matrix knockoff. But will the good reviews make for great box office? Last night, while viewing the latest trailer in a theater with some friends, I mentioned that Wanted was receiving great reviews. Nobody believed me at first, and then they didn’t care; they still thought it looked terrible. Good reviews rarely help an action movie, and bad reviews rarely deter audiences from seeing them. However, if we look at the top 5 most critically acclaimed action movies, it’s clear that people do often prefer a good action film to a bad one. "Over at the AMC blog SciFi Scanner, there’s a post about the accuracy of Jason Bourne’s condition in the Bourne movies. At the World Science Festival, held last weekend in NYC, there was a panel titled The Brain and Bourne: Neuroscience in the Bourne Trilogy that featured Bourne Identity director Doug Liman and psychiatrist and neuroscientist Giulio Tononi. And according to Tononi, the sort of amnesia that Bourne suffers from, which includes the ability to retain certain skills despite an overall loss of memory, is rare but does exist. Interesting, but does it really matter? Nobody making the Bourne movies seems to have known its accuracy, and they probably didn’t care. And neither do most moviegoers. Amnesia is simply a good plot device for movies, and oftentimes they’re more about something else than the condition, accurate or not. "Two of this year’s Oscar winning films were sequels. And only two Oscar-nominated films are officially slated for sequels. But only one film fits both of these truths. The Bourne Ultimatum, which was a bit of an upset in its winning of three Academy Awards, including the shocker of Best Editing (which Christopher Rouse certainly deserved), will definitely be getting a follow-up, if this Variety article from Friday is correct (via Cinematical and Empire). The possibility of a fourth Bourne installment has been floating around for awhile now, despite the fact that Ultimatum so nicely tied up the series’ storyline and despite implications from Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass that continuing the franchise is unnecessary. But considering Ultimatum was a box office hit, and a critical favorite (it was one of the best mainstream films of the year) and has now won three Oscars, it seems like a no-brainer that Universal should want to keep Jason Bourne running. "I liked the Bourne Identity. I thought Supremacy was just as good. And I would continue on to say that Ultimatum perfectly compliments the first two films and does a great job filling in the gaps and ending the story on a high-note.Damon's performance as Bourne is perfect. Bourne is such a cool character. He's like the Road Runner. Everytime you think he's about to get caught, he escapes with little to no troubles. Julia Stiles was more well-developed, although there are a couple lines she says you expect answers to that end up being forgotten about later. I thought David Strathairn did an amazing job as the government villain. I would say there are only 2 little minor perturbances that got to me in this otherwise great film. The casting of Albert Finney, because he is practically a replica of Brian Cox. I could barely tell the two apart. The other involves a hitman being unscathed after you see him practically die. "I have been making the case for Doug Liman for years now. I’d even recently given up the claim that I completely despise Swingers (it’s mostly the neo-swing soundtrack I hate). I constantly argued that his The Bourne Identity was better than Greengrass’ The Bourne Supremacy — in the end Greengrass’ The Bourne Ultimatum turned out ultimately the best — and still continue promoting the genius of Mr. and Mrs. Smith (I watched it with a newbie just the other night, and that person was convinced). But now, I am on the fence about Jumper, which I haven’t yet seen and which arrived in theaters today. I can’t decide whether to bother seeing it. The movie certainly looks stupid. I’ll admit it. Yet this is where my Liman defending came about in the past year, especially recently, as its release got closer. Every time the trailer or TV ad came on the screen, someone would turn to me and say it looks really stupid. Or I would overhear a similar statement coming from the mouths of strangers. O ... "In my opinion, the best movies of 2007...I gave an explanation of each, feel free to debate or call me an idiot or whatever. 1. No Country for Old Men Easily the best film I've seen in 2007...say what you want about the ending, but I think it's one of the most important statements about America ever put onto film. Anton Chigurh is by far the best villain I've seen in a real long time...his face when he's strangling the cop in the beginning still creeps me out when I think about it. The Cohen's have created their masterpiece of a resume of masterpieces. Call it, friendo.2. There Will Be Blood Yeah, I know these have been the top two films on almost every critic's list this year, but after seeing both of them I definitly understand why. Daniel-Day Lewis is fricken amazing as Daniel Plainview... one of the most explosive, invigorating performances I have ever seen from any actor. P.T. Anderson has outdone himself with this one. "I know I’m late, but I just finally saw the last of the Bourne movies this week, and I just had to comment on the casting of Albert Finney in The Bourne Ultimatum. Was it intentional to employ an actor that would be so confusing to viewers who would easily mistake him for Brian Cox, an actor who appeared in the first two films? It’s worth noting that our first look at Finney’s character is in a photograph, and so the ability to recognize him as a different actor than we’d previously seen in the series is less than if we were introduced to him in person. As little as I figure out what purpose it serves, I think the lookalike casting had to have been a conscious decision. After all, who hasn’t mistaken the actors for one another at some point in time? When Cox first became a heavily used character actor, I mistook him for Finney. And according to a five-year-old Page Six write-up, Cox gets wrongly identified as Finney all the time (”But I’m much better looking,” he says). It wasn’t s ... " [More]

"The Bourne Ultimatum was a terrific way to "end" the Bourne trilogy of films. Once again, the title may be borrowed from Robert Ludlum's novel, but the plot has virtually no similarity. Which is probably a good thing as the novel The Bourne Ultimatum was not one of Ludlum's finer moments. Matt Damon gives another terrific performance in the title role. Some of the action choreography is particularly well done, most notably a meeting and attendant action in a London train station. My only real complaint (I could offer a few technology and plot "gripes", but I'll refrain) was that in at least one of the fight scenes, the director's choice to use a handheld camera made the fight too difficult to follow. I enjoy the sensation that "I'm there" in the middle of the fight, but just as John Woo overuses slow motion, this film overused the handheld camera. I, for one, hope that another Bourne movie is forthcoming in the not too distant future. " [More]

"5. The Bourne UltimatumWith the exception of Wes Anderson’s films, few entries in recent cinema have been as exciting to watch as first viewings of the Bourne films. Much has been critically made over the "spy with a conscience" that has already influenced major action films (namely Casino Royale), but the praise is wholly warranted. The only other times that I have been wowed so much by an action sequence was the bridge scene from Mission: Impossible III. For the series' third and final (?) installment, director Paul Greengrass and his crew (especially cinematographer Oliver Wood and editor Christopher Rouse, both so key to the maestro's trademark mixed camera surveillance look) ante up by having three such scenes. Since The Bourne Identity was released in 2002, Matt Damon has elevated himself from “rising star” to a near sure thing and one of the industry’s best.
