Directed by Wolfgang Petersen.
Set adrift in the vast waters of the North Atlantic for a luxury New Year's Eve party staged in the ship's magnificent ballroom, the massive ocean-liner Poseidon receives an unexpected jolt when a rogue, 100-foot wave rolls it completely upside down, forcing the surviving passengers to fight their way to safety in Das Boot director Wolfgang Petersen's waterlogged blockbuster. Trapped beneath the waterline and implored by the captain to remain in place until a rescue team arrives, the panicked survivors struggle to keep their cool as the water begins to rush in, infernos blaze all around, and a loss of electricity plunges the doomed vessel into total darkness. Seasoned gambler Dylan Johns (Josh Lucas) isn't willing to wage his life on the prompt arrival of help, though, and as he attempts to navigate the treacherous, inverted maze of death, he is flanked by desperate band of like-minded seafarers including eight-year-old Conor (Jimmy Bennett) and his mother, Maggie (Jacinda Barrett), reticent stowaway Elena (Mía Maestro), suicidal Richard (Richard Dreyfus), and concerned father Robert (Kurt Russell), whose missing daughter may still be somewhere onboard along with her frightened fiancé. With a little luck and a little help from onboard waiter Marco (Freddy Rodriguez), the desperate team may just live to see the morning after. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Film: JawsRated: PGDirected by: Steven Spielberg Starring: Roy Scheider: Sheriff Brody Richard Dreyfuss: Hooper Robert Shaw: Quint Tagline: Don’t go in the water By: Efferdent Johnson Past memories: In 1975, I was doing my best to propagate the best hair helmet any pre-teen had ever hoped to wear. My interests were few and my fears were many. Some of which were brought to the surface by a frightening grey machine with a zillion teeth and a thirst for blood. By my tenth year of life, the most frightening movie experiences were the ever-so-scary villains of Disney. I can remember sinking in my seat during Willy Wonka’s boat ride, or almost all of Chitty Chitty Bang AHHHHHHHHH!!! Jaws would never affect me… or so I thought. The chances of me seeing the movie were less than my chances for a Senate seat. My mom would make sure that her young sons would not be turned to evil, sexually confused or exposed to the violence of ... " [More]

"Movies 101 is the NYU Film Course long moderated by Professor Richard Brown. The “Leading Men” series includes some of the finest working actors, as well as Josh Lucas. Each interview covers nearly every aspect of the actors’ respective careers, from the good, to the bad, to the ugly. This, of course, excludes Lucas, whose interview can only go so far in trying to make the man seem bearably competent. George Clooney’s hour-long interview is first on the disc, and it is by far one of the most engaging. Clooney is, redundant as this sounds, naturally charming and charismatic. His great sense of humor is often overlooked, but Brown lets him run free, often chuckling at his subject’s one-liners. With this interview in particular, Brown’s knowledge about film really allows him to discuss in-depth the thought process that went into each film of Clooney’s. Now having directed his own films and having started a production company with good friend ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Quick, which do you care about more: Shelley Winters or intense action? That’s likely to be the deciding factor in how you respond to Poseidon, Wolfgang Petersen’s redo of 1972’s The Poseidon Adventure. In the latter, Winters plays a rotund old woman who’s sure she won’t survive the wreckage of the titular ship and thus makes frequent ready-to-die remarks to her devoted husband. You ache for both of them. You pity the never-married, middle-aged man, played meekly by Red Buttons, who’s given up on finding a companion. You admire the God-questioning preacher, a tough-as-nails Gene Hackman, for his gumption in the face of a nonsensical universe. And the obnoxious cop played by Ernest Borgnine? You care for him, too—or you at least want to wax the hell out of those freaky eyebrows. In Poseidon, you get Josh Lucas and Emmy Rossum and Freddy Rodriguez—the first indication that the disaster movie has changed profoundly ... " [More]

"SherryBaby is one of those painful to watch films that are really important for actors/actress to show off their chops, but, as a viewer, you feel like you have to see it more than you want to see it. So, I spent 90 some minutes watching Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Stranger Than Fiction") suffer. And she was fabulous. She plays a woman who just got out of jail and wants to get her daughter back. But her brother and sister-in-law have been taking care of the girl while she was locked up. And it's sad. And it's hard to watch. And Gyllenhaal takes off her clothes a lot. Poseidon is a pretty average disaster movie. Everyone's on a big boat. A freak wave hits it. Boat capsizes. A brave few try to escape. The effects were good. Kurt Russell ("Grindhouse") rules. Josh Lucas ("Glory Road") sucks. That pretty much sums it up. " [More]

"POSEIDON (2006) is a remake of the beloved cheezeball classic THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972). The 2006 version barely merits discussion except that it so completely epitomizes everything that’s wrong with the culture of American movie making today. Had the producers done their job, POSEIDON could have been crafted as a disaster movie extraordinaire. The goal could have been to “out-Titanic” TITANIC with state of the art visual effects, action-disaster stunt set pieces and genuine moments of pathos (they could have gone for cheeze or could have kept it real…either way would have worked). Instead the movie barely registers on the emotional radar. The memory of this film doesn't last the time it takes for a sneeze to dissipate in the wind.We have passable somewhat compulsory visual effects shots that tell the story. We have characters that in some cases are updated slightly (one of them is gay) and in some cases characterizations have regressed. Gone ... " [More]
