The tragic aftermath of human carelessness travels around the world in this multi-narrative drama from filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. Richard (Brad Pitt) and Susan (Cate Blanchett) are a couple from the United States who have traveled to Morocco in Northern Africa on a vacation after the death of one of their children has sent Susan into a deep depression. Richard and Susan's other two children have been left in the care of Amelia (Adriana Barraza), their housekeeper. Amelia is originally from Mexico, and her oldest son is getting married in Tijuana. Unable to find someone who can watch the kids, or to obtain permission to take the day off, Amelia takes the children with her as she travels across the border for the celebration. Around the same time, in Morocco a poor farmer buys a hunting rifle, and he gives it to his sons to scare off the predatory animals that have been thinning out their goat herd. The boys decide to test the weapon's range by shooting at a bus far away; the shot hits Susan in the shoulder, and soon she's bleeding severely, while police are convinced the attack is the work of terrorists. In Japan, Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) is a teenage deaf-mute whose mother recently committed suicide. This despairing, confused girl experiences such rage and frustration that she causes her volleyball team to lose a match, and later yanks her underwear off and begins exposing herself to boys in a crowded restaurant. Chieko's father then struggles to reach past the emotional distance which separates him and his daughter. Babel earned Alejandro González Iñárritu the prize for Best Director at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"At last, a film that is critically acclaimed that I do not find totally overrated! While I don't think Babel is a masterpeice as some belevie, it is a very strong film, better than most. It is 140 minuets long and rarely boring, and has a few stirring moments. It is probably the best film of a poor genre (the Crash-ensamble film). Babel is certainly ambitious, taking place in four countries and in four langauges (English, Spanish, Arabic and Japanese). There are also four plotlines: In the first, two Arab kids in Morroco unthinkingly shoot a bus and hurt an American tourist, which is later revealed to be (in the second plotline) Cate Blanchet, who is having an arguement with her husband (Brad Pitt). The third story revolves around a Mexican nanny (Adriana Barraza) who is caught in a bind when the parents of the kids she's caring for are late in returning from a trip and don't send a replacement, forcing her to take the kids along to her son's weeding. The fourth takes place i ... " [More]

"Babel was my Netflix movie of the week. It is one of the two best picture nominees from last year's Oscars that I still hadn't seen, and that's mainly because I actively put off watching it. I had heard things about it, good and bad, and the bad things deterred me. I knew this would be a movie that was hard to watch and, perhaps, hard to understand, so I felt no rush to watch it. Thanks to the power of Netflix and their program for generating recommendations, there it appeared on my queue, and the rest, as they say, is history.Babel is a complex interweaving and intersection of lives hailing from around the globe; the intersections are at once random and ordained, and the ties that bind focus on the human condition, particularly as it relates to innocent mistakes, careless choices, and the ensuing consequences. Richard (Brad Pitt) and Susan (Cate Blanchett) are vacationing in Morocco because their youngest child, Sam, apparently died of SIDS. That's what I ass ... " [More]

"At The Circuit, John Hopewell and Emilio Mayorga offer a number of signs that “the mantle of greatness is rapidly slipping over” Silent Light director Carlos Reygadas. I’m surely not going to argue with that, but I do think it’s interesting that Mayorga and Hopewell make it a point to set Reygadas apart from other hot young Mexican directors, such as Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonz??lez I????rritu, who crossed over to Hollywood success: Reygadas has a niche in a pantheon - not new Mexican cinema; given the accessibility of and interest in film-making worldwide, the very concept of new national cinemas may be arcane - but new, left-field world cinema, up there with other unorthodoz film-makers such as, say, Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Read: he’s making art films for die hards, and that’s never gonna translate to the masses. I don’t know. I don’t want to be an elitist. I feel like I’m a woman of the people, or whatever. But I like it that Silent Light requires work to en ... " [More]

"I was a little sceptical about this film because it was getting such good reviews that I wasn't sure that it could live up to the expectations that I had for it. So I finally saw it on a very, very, very small screen on a plane and I have to say that I was unimpressed. But they may have been the lack of sleep and the tiny screen as I then saw it a second time and really appreciated it. It is a very moving film with some beautiful visuals and a brilliant set of interlocking stories. I like the concept of the film in itself about the tower of Babel crumbling because there were so many different languages all trying to communicate and each not understanding what the other was saying. So I am especially fond of the stories surrounding Japan and Mexico and the barriers facing them. This is a fantastic film although a little dragging in places, it is one that I would thoroughly advise seeing, even if it is just so you can say that you've at least given it a try. Please see ... "Oddly intense for a slow movie. Babel takes you out of your comfort zone by using plausible real life situations all while taking you out of your box if you will. It brings to the light the difference in cultures around the globe, and what may seem commonplace to them, can be uncomfortable for us. While have watched movies with far more gore and violence, I was intense and almost fearing what might happen next in this movie. I think it could have been a better movie if it came more full cirlcle at the end connecting all of the different characters in the movie (it was more of a linear connection than a circular). "The Double Feature is a dying artform. Save for Grindhouse, going to the theater and seeing two films back to back is rare. Why not host double feature parties / DIY screenings? Here are a few of my ideas: Babel and Lost in Translation Think about it: Japan, hospitals, travel admid marital difficulties, and of course, not being able to communicate. The Cowboy and the Frenchman and The Discreet Charm of the BourgeoisieCowboy and the Frenchman and a brilliantly weird David Lynch short film that's available on a recently released collection. I've been thinking for a while now what it would be like to see it in front of Luis Bunuel's surrealist/mannerist masterpiece. " [More]

"Babel is not the best film of the year, but is definitely the most ambitious one. Screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga and director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu once again play with intertwining storylines from seemingly isolated characters, though on a much greater scale than they did with their previous films Amores Perros and 21 Grams. (A budget=4 storylines instead of 3.) The result is similar to a better built and more imaginative version of Crash. Primal fears are again addressed, the chief difference being that Innaritu's film leaves the audience feeling as if they have emotionally survived a sledgehammer attack to the knees. In terms of catharsis, the film is a monumental success on par with "King Lear." That said, the final cut of the film is a disappointment when compared to its trailer. The basic conflict of each vignette is set up and the suspenseful 3 minute preview coupled with knowledge of Innaritu's past films allows the viewer's mind to explode with imaginatio ... " [More]
