Directed by Betty Thomas.
Three teenagers two-timed by a local lothario decide to turn the tables on him in this romantic comedy. John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) is the big man on campus at his high school -- he's the captain and star player of the basketball team, he's got money, he's good-looking and charming, and he can have any girl he wants. However, the latter attribute is about to get him in serious trouble when three different girls at his school -- Heather (Ashanti), Beth (Sophia Bush) and Carrie (Arielle Kebbel) -- discover they've all been dating John at the same time. Determined to bring down the campus ladykiller, the girls devise a plan -- they pick a cute but socially clumsy girl who is new at school, Kate (Brittany Snow), and give her a crash course in stealing John's heart. Once Kate has John wrapped around her little finger, she's supposed to drop him like a bad habit and give him a taste of what heartbreak is really like. However, it seems that the early stages of the plan work a little too well, and John and Kate end up falling for each other for real. John Tucker Must Die also stars Jenny McCarthy, Penn Badgley, and Dan Payne. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"I can just imagine how the pitch went for this one. Writer Jeff Lowell (John Tucker Must Die) says, “I’ve got this idea for a movie that’s like Ghost except that in the end Demi Moore falls in love with Whoopi Goldberg. Nah, just kidding, I’ve got this really serious project in mind, very artsy, something that will lift me out of my sitcom-based pattern.” And then the New Line execs say, “Umm. Yeah, so we want to do your Ghost movie, but it has to be more heterosexual.” And Lowell says, “Oh, that was just a fake idea that I was going to propose as a parody to be used on Family Guy or The Simpsons.” Then New Line flashes a suitcase full of money at Lowell, says they’ll even let him direct the movie, and the deal is done. The result: Over Her Dead Body, a movie that seems so ridiculous that it just might work as a parody of itself. And I hope that Paul Rudd sees how silly the movie is and decided to star in it ironically (just as he appreciates the irony of how his bride died). Becau ... " [More]

"All around positive movie, spoiled by a horrible title. Actually it might be a bit too cute. Those things and tricks, which main characters are doing to each others, would be awful in real life - but not so in this movie. Nevertheless nice entertaining moment for an evening with nothing else to do. Not sure what the message was, but it doesn't really matter. " [More]

"I was surprised. I thought that this would be just another guy-bashing movie, but it turned out to be remarkably sweet. Although some parts were quite a bit unbelievable, and other parts were incredibly sour- it evened out to be a strangely humorous movie. I actually really enjoyed myself. I was thoroughly entertained. " [More]

Sweetness does not necessarily equal laughs in John Tucker Must Die, an airy teen comedy in dire need of an attitude adjustment. While the flick may play swimmingly to its eager to please audience, there's little in the production that actually earns such blind adoration. The premise seems rife for high school cynicism, but unfortunately, the whole thing plays out too good-natured for it to have any real kick. Even the villain of the piece, good old John Tucker himself (played by the far too old Jesse Metcalf), is molded into a kind soul just halfway through the flick, thus handing the only malicious deeds to the trio of ladies trying to get back at him -- who by the way, spend half of their time exiled in flat moments of slapstick shtick. One might expect more from director Betty Thomas, although one look at the rest of her filmography reminds folks just how mediocre most of her output can be under the Hollywood system. In the end, it's the teen girl/early college crowd that will fan the flame of this junker -- finding zero faults with the movie just as long as the boys are cute and the misunderstood girl gets the right guy in the end. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
