Directed by Todd Field.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Todd Field teams with novelist Tom Perrotta to adapt Perrotta's acclaimed novel concerning the suburban malaise experienced by a handful of small-town individuals whose intersecting lives converge in a variety of surprising, and sometimes ominous, ways. Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, and Patrick Wilson star in a cinematic adaptation that doesn't aim so much to simply reproduce the book for the screen as it does to re-imagine the written word by exploring new possibilities for the characters and situations originally presented in Perrotta's 2004 best-seller. Sarah (Winslet) is a suburban outsider who, unlike the other playground moms, isn't afraid to approach the dreamy but long-absent father whom smitten housewives have taken to calling the "Prom King." Long days at the local community pool with their respective children soon find Sarah becoming acquainted with local husband and father Brad (Patrick Wilson) -- who seems to share in her seething discontentment with life in their quaint commuter town. An English literature major who never envisioned a fate as a soccer mom, Sarah has a growing dissatisfaction with her successful husband (Gregg Edelman) that parallels Brad's increasing frustration with his inability to pass the bar and connect with his wife, Kathy (Jennifer Connelly), a successful documentary filmmaker. It's not long before the dejected pair is meeting for a series of illicit afternoon trysts as their unsuspecting spouses work and their children lie quietly napping. Meanwhile, after the community is riled by the return of a convicted sex offender (Jackie Earle Haley) who leaves the concerned parents scrambling to protect their young ones, an attempt made by Sarah and Brad to legitimize their clandestine relationship by dining together with their respective spouses begins to awaken Kathy's suspicions about the fidelity of her husband. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"I really enjoyed Dark Victory. Bette Davis ("Wicked Stepmother") stars as a young socialite diagnosed with a brain tumor. She then must decide how to live out the last days of her life. I couldn't take my eyes off Davis, she just lights up the screen, even when she's dying. Humphrey Bogart ("The Harder They Fall") has a cameo as a horse trainer and his scenes with Davis are some of the best. Though the plot description sounds depressing and I did end up crying, it's not necessarily a sad film. There's a lot to think about here. Also, a young Ronald Reagan ("The Killers") puts in an appearance. Jezebel is another Bette Davis film, and though this is directed by William Wyler ("The Liberation of L.B. Jones"), Davis won an Oscar for her role and the film was nominated for best picture, I had some real problems with it. I know it's set in the Pre-Civil War South and Davis plays a Southern Belle, but really, the racism was hard for me to take. I know that slavery was not even part of t ... " [More]

"Little Children is a masterpiece, a deeply moving film about people that will seem just a real those that you know, some of whom you will love, some of whom you will hate. I have never been more involved in a movie romance than I have with this movie. I didn't care about the people they would hurt, the families that would break up, or the pain they would put their children though. I wanted these people to be together. The lovers are Sarah (Kate Winslet) and Brad (Patrick Wilson) both of whom are married and of whose marriges are in trouble. We sense that the problem with Brad and his wife is mores ituational than emotional. as the couple hardly has any time together after the birth of their children. The same cannot be said for Sarah, whose husband (Gregg Edelmen) is distant addicted to internet porn. One day, while taking the kids to the park, the two meet and fall for each other. This sounds like traditional material, I know, but there is nothing formuliac about this film. ... " [More]

"Director Todd Field certainly knows how to get good performances out of actors but the thing that stands out about LITTLE CHILDREN is that it feels as though the director is watching all the action from the crow's nest far above.  Watching the film I was reminded of domestic dramas such as American Beauty and even a bit of Donnie Darko.  There is a dispassionate, objective cast over the material which is primarily an exploration of the loneliness and frustration of middle class suburban life.  LITTLE CHILDREN shows us bahavior (much of it narcissistic and immature) and lets the exposure of such behavior speak for itsself.  The movie (rarely) stoops so low as to telegraph the emotional intent of a given scene.  The experience is one of watching something and wondering when things will explode.  Of course, when things finally do go bad it's in a way that you don't exactly expect, which is a tribuite to the material.  The movie, though a bit conventional at times, is more ... "The narration is great in the movie. It adds a story book quality but at the same time it is a real life story. You hate all of the charaters at some time or another but you end up feeling their pain and sympathize with them. The charaters end up where they should be which leaves you feeling ok with where the movie ended. " [More]

"The greatest thing about this film is that every character in this film has good and bad qualities. Even the convicted sex offender managed to evoke a little bit of sypathy from me. More interesting to me, however, were the two lead characters played by Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson. Although they were the romantic leads in the film, we were by no means meant to view them as guiltless lovers escaping bad marriages. In a somewhat surprising twist, both their spouses actually seemed to be halfway decent people. At least, they didn't ultimately seem any worse than the lead characters. The bad marriages weren't the result of a terrible spouse, but just the result of an unfortunately pairing of incompatible people. This type of moral ambiguity made the film really interesting to watch and think about later on. Without any easy answers, or easy judgements, Little Children is a far more interesting film than other films which cover the same subject matter. " [More]

"Saw a matinee of 'Little Children' this afternoon with the wife and my son. Powerful, intelligent film that reminded me a bit of 'American Beauty', with its 'trapped in suburbia' themes, desperately trapped characters, and just as many laugh out loud moments as cringe in your seat scenes. But unlike 'American Beauty' this one made me cry, and while I was totally expecting it not to have a happy ending, I wasn't prepared for the ending that it served up. A mixture of happiness, sadness, despair and oddly enough hope. I was initially assuming that Eddie Murphy was the front runner for Supporting Actor (and I might still be right in my original assumption), but after seeing Jackie Earle Haley in this film, I have to change horses. He was absolutely amazing. How you can be totally creeped out by a character and yet still find that little nugget of humanity and make the audience bond with you. Definitely on my list of 'best movies of 2006'. " [More]

"Hi Aaron. I think I'll weigh in on what I saw as well.Little ChildrenMaldonneLonesomeRemorq uesPlaytimeCivic LifeInfamousDay Night Day NightDodsworthI also attended a tribute to Walter Murch and a tribute to Alexander Corda. There were two Romanian short films in the Great Expectations program. The Tube with a Hat by Radu Jude and Marilena de la P7 by Cristian Nemescu. Both were exhilerating because they were distinct, fresh voices from a rather unheard of place in the world of cinema.I really wanted to see Ghosts of Cité Soleil the way everyone I talked to who'd seen it seemed awestruck by it. But my schedule just didn't work out. " [More]

"FRIDAY EVENING: SEVERANCE - don't like horror/slasher movies so this was not fun. i can appreciate that it was clever and funny (i was laughing when i wasn't cringing) but it was not for me. i'm sure it will be very popular! Laura Harris (Daisy from Dead Like Me) was fun to watch and made it tolerable. SATURDAY MORNING: A TRIBUTE TO WALTER MURCH - liked this a lot. only tribute we made it to. after some clips there was an on-stage interview and although technical it was really fascinating. highlights for me were when he talked about how he redid Touch of Evil using Orson Welles' notes and how he edited the Godfather movies. great storytelling and behind the scenes info. could have listened for another hour. SATURDAY AFTERNOON: THE SENTIMENTAL BLOKE - one of my absolute favorites. i love silent films and this rare one from Australia i'd never heard of. very charming, with live original music from an Australian composer. Telluride is known for it's "hidden tr ... " [More]

"I met director Todd Field before the very first screening of Little Children here at Telluride 2006. He was very nervous and didn't want to say a thing about the film. I see now why he didn't. It was so important for the experience to have no notion of what would happen in this film, and I won't give anything away here. Like his first film, In the Bedroom, Field creates unbelievable tension in the most understated moments. I described In the Bedroom as Field slowly winding a thin wire tighter and tighter. With Little Children, it's like he's ratcheting the tension of a garage door coil. There are moments I seriously wasn't sure I'd make it through. But what's unlike any film I've seen before is how he breaks these tense moments with hysterical comedy. He so deftly walks a tightrope between tragedy and comedy, it's simply awe inspiring. The legend of the sophomore film is when a first-time filmmaker has a break out hit, the second film rarely lives up to the first. Not the case wi ... " [More]

A funny, piercing examination of suburban selfishness and fear, Todd Field's adaptation of Tom Perrotta's novel Little Children is a masterful example of humanist filmmaking. As illicit lovers Sarah and Brad, Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson excel at portraying self-absorption, though they each come from distinctly different emotional places. Winslet's depiction of Sarah's fierce intelligence makes her lack of self-awareness all the more tragic. At numerous points in the film, Sarah displays a casual disregard for her three-year-old daughter when the toddler shows basic needs for her mother's attention, and Winslet's illustration of this dispassion is frighteningly realistic. Meanwhile, Brad is eternally immature, forever chafing at demands of responsibility, and unwilling or unable to live life on his own terms without a mother or wife to answer to. While countless films paint monstrous pictures of the horrors of bad parenting, Little Children sheds light onto the much more insidiously easy trap of negligent parenting. The collective fear of these characters is that a safe and quiet life might not be what they really want. Despite the rigid structures of suburban etiquette, they all finally get the excuse to vent their frustrations when Ronnie, a convicted child molester played by Jackie Earle Haley, moves into the neighborhood. Ronnie's presence disrupts the community's placid exterior and, at last, the repressed suburbanites are able to breach their self-imposed silence and express their long-held anxieties by transferring their feelings onto this new, perceived threat. Haley's exceptional performance makes this rather schematic character entirely relatable, even during his most disturbing moments. He understands all of his worst instincts, but for all his effort is still unable to resist them. The most remarkable achievement of the film is that the three leads, as well as all of the supporting characters, are viewed with a lucid sense of compassion and humanity. The worst of their flaws and the consequences of their behaviors are presented unflinchingly, but the film passes judgment only on actions, never on people. The way Field and his gifted cast inspire us to feel for these often unlikable people makes the message at the heart of the film quite clear: that adulthood is defined by empathy. Funny, tragic, and very knowledgeable about human behavior, Little Children is full of truth. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
