Directed by Spike Lee.
The volatile showdown between a determined cop and a perfectionist bank robber is sent spiraling toward disaster when a scheming power broker steps in to take control of the situation in this hair-raising heist flick directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster. Dalton Russell (Owen) is a bank robber with a difference. In his quest to execute the perfect heist, Dalton has taken every possible factor into consideration. Dalton's uncanny ability of staying one step ahead of the law thwarts even-tempered Detective Keith Frazier's (Washington) best efforts. But there's another factor at play. The bank president (Christopher Plummer) has requested the services of high-profile negotiator Madeline White (Foster). Despite her commendable track record, Madeline is something of a wild card, and before the day is over, this bank robbery will go down in history as one of the most elaborate heists ever executed. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"NEO - If we are talking vacuous severity in both tone and expression, then I think the only suitable replacement is DAVID DUCHOVNY. He pumbed the depths of sci-fi for 9 years on The X-Files and barely broke a grimace throughout. MORPHEUS - Some quick thinking respondents have already stolen my answer here, but for another role...CLIVE OWEN. Think of him in Inside Man, the fierce determination and calculation. That's Morpheus. And then think of Owen in Children of Men, the hope mixed with despondency...that's Morpheus. Also, Owen can pull off the "gritty" of the real world like no one's business (again, see Children of Men). TRINITY - Again, stoled. NATALIE PORTMAN. I actually think Carrie Ann Moss is an older rip-off of Portman's dramatic acting. Portman does tender, angry, and spiteful much better than Moss. CYPHER - Alright, try and go with me on this one...ZACH GALIFIANAKIS. Have you ever seen his acting in music videos (Fiona Apple, Kanye West, etc.). Even though his ... " [More]

"Spike Lee's newest movie, "Inside Man" starts off deceptively simple: a group of thieves infiltrate a New York bank, take hostages and hold themselves up in the basement offices. It sounds like every other heist movie ever made. There's a catch, though: for as smart as the "good"guys are, the "bad"guys are just as clever. I don't want to spoil the movie by detailing just how clever Dalton Russell (Clive Owen, "Closer") is but I do want to say it is refreshing to see a movie that has its central plan nailed down flawlessly. It's not very often that we believe the characters on screen have thought through their actions like real people. Russell is one of those people. He has calculated, planned and undoubtedly rehearsed the entire operation to perfection. Everything we, the audience, and the cops (including Denzel Washington's Detective Keith Frazier) think of, Russell has not only thought of, but also planned a counter-move against. It's amazing, really. "Inside Man" isn't a typi ... " [More]

"Inside Man is a welcome releif, being a whole lot better than it looks. The movie shows us that the words "thiller" and "good" are not necessarily mutualy exclusive. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it does have something to say, it says it well, and it's a lot of fun.I am not as familier as I should be with the work of Spike Lee, having seen only three of his films, "Do the Right Thing", "Malcolm X" and "Bamboozled" (I found the first to be good but overrated and the last two to be excellent). "Inside Man" is not as relelentless didactic as those films, it's not as polical either, but more generally philosophical. Many of Lee's movies involve race relations and this is no exception, but he integrates the racial themes into a larger story and less specific idea. The story, as you know from the trailer, involves "the perfect bank robbery." Clive Owen plays Daltran Russell, the head of a leage of proffesional crooks who enter a bank dressed as painter and hold everyone hostage. ... " [More]

"There are a lot of movies that I love that have heists in them but they are usually a means to an end and the bulk of the film usually deals with the fallout of said heist. Straight up heist films I love are : Jean Pierre Melville's stylish and masterful Le Cercle Rouge and Un Flic. The Hot Rock and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (good call, Rizzo) are two of my favorite seventies Heist movies. One Heist film I just love is The Great Train Robbery - there is one perfectly choreographed scene that involves a lanky Donald Sutherland (he was so awesome in these quirky roles) and an impossible-to-get key that is a site to behold. Just recently I saw The Brinks Job and The Day They Robbed The Bank of England on TCM and I liked them both (but i do like Peter Falk and Aldo Rey respectively so that might have something to do with it). Finally, even though it is not a heist film I love what DePalma did in Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise's famous spy scenes. DePalma always cou ... " [More]

"( 'obscure' spoiler here folks.).. .Good but not great...main thought..as often these days,i wish i was an editor ..it's just too long...'hellaccious cast' right enough ..but there's enough material here for a tight ,hour long 'Hustle' type T.V. outing...and /or a superior post 9/11 'NYPDBlue' type series...granted it might have to be Dennis Haysbert, not DenZEL..and Marg Helgenberger, not Jody Foster...but so it goes. Spike Lee was at pains to point out the homage to 'Dog Day Afternoon' and in case any slow-witted film fan misses it 'Dog Day..' is name-checked along with 'Serpico' and 'Kojak' ...the film that i had in mind most though was 'Quick Change' the great Bill Murray comedy where he pulls a bank heist dressed as a clown( a central idea from which is employed here).Best aspect of 'The Inside Man' is the great dialogue, laced liberally with the sort of gallows humour that Denis Leary's ... "The plot of "Inside Man" revolves around the perfect bank robbery...or so you think. The entire film is based upon deception. Even the direction throws you for a loop: the editing upsets your sense of chronology, film colors and gradient change, offsetting the "reality" of the story, and the entire tense storyline is speckled not with true comic relief, but dark humor, social commentary, and closeups of breasts. This was my first Spike Lee film, and it certainly took some getting used to, not only for the no-longer-novel twisted-chronology technique and the film grade changes, but for the seemingly irrelevant Arab and Jew remarks made by characters, sexy conversations, and a brief lesson on political correctness which Denzel's character gives to an NYPD cop (which actually have quite a bit to do with the plot). The whole movie would seem quite random, except that the well-written script and indie-style directing techniques tightly integrate the parts of t ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Spike Lee has done commercials, of course. But has he ever really done commercial? Apparently, the uneven auteur was willing to do anything to make up for She Hate Me, his unwatchable 2004 effort about corporate malfeasance, alternative families, George W. Bush, and, uh, Woody Harrelson. Except for a few trademark tricks and some race-related chatter, the new Inside Man is as far from a Spike Lee Joint as the director is likely ever to get. How box-office-seductive is this heist movie? Let’s just say that Ron Howard was originally slated to direct. Lee’s work here is energetic and assured, but it’s unlikely that even Ed Wood could’ve screwed up Russell Gewirtz’s stellar debut script. A tight, smart puzzler that doesn’t throw out red herrings so much as intriguing question marks, Inside Man has all the wit, complexity, and self-awareness of The Usual Suspects or Dog Day Afternoon. (The latter is even referenced during the ine ... " [More]

"Inside Man (2006) Although this is just another bank heist movie, it has enough new wrinkles to make it interesting. Director Spike Lee, with major studio backing, gets good performances from his elite actors—Denzel Washington (who I always like), Clive Owen (who has power even though he talks through a ski mask most of the movie), Jodie Foster (whose revoltingly muscular and tanned legs reflect her personality as a rich people’s “fixer”), and Christopher Plummer (as the uneasy old banker who wants his dirty secret to remain hidden in safety deposit box #392). Unfortunately, the last two minutes of the movie has a typical Hollywood ending where a wildly improbable event happens in order to tell dense or sleepy or lazy viewers exactly what happened in the movie. "To me, this was a satsifying, Friday-night-with-the-kid-noth ing-better-to-watch movie. It has a crafty storyline, with what I will say is a very clever concept for a perfect bank robbery. I asked myself, whoever wrote this script could be a good career criminal. Overall, it's not very deep, and some of the character motivations are a bit far-fetched, but hey, it's supposed to be a cop thriller. But don't expect a lot of car chases and shooting sprees. It's a slightly more "think-y" crime drama. You can see Spike Lee's signatures in some of the racially-tinged conversations (between Denzel and a street cop) as well as a great dialog between a Brooklyn-kid and one of the robbers. The acting overall was very good, Denzel and Jodie Foster are very believable in their roles, and Christopher Plummer is a good (bad) guy...casting Plummer for his character is an ironic choice, based on one of his major career roles (I won't spoil it for you). This film doesn't even come close to a "Silence ... Filmmaker Spike Lee's first foray into big-studio genre movies, Inside Man is a twisty thriller that makes up for its flaws with star power and sharp observations about post-2001 New York. With his keen eye for New York City atmosphere and gift for kinetic camerawork, Lee enhances the tension of neophyte scripter Russell Gerwitz's bank heist and the shifting questions of the robbers' identities and motivations during what becomes a very long night in the life of Denzel Washington's initially confident hostage negotiator. Nothing, of course, is as it seems, as even a superficially slick genre narrative becomes fodder for Lee's witty and ominous commentary about racial profiling, class, and the complexities of New York's ethnic melting pot. Perennial Lee leading man Washington is sterling as a detective who refuses to let anything get in the way of doing his job. Washington's nemesis Clive Owen exudes his signature cool charisma as the steely criminal mastermind, while Jodie Foster has a ball playing a powerful woman whose job title remains an utter mystery. Once the standoff ends, though, the energy dissipates and the multiple endings still leave a few glaring holes. Nevertheless, Lee still succeeds in pulling off the neatest trick of all: making Inside Man sleek entertainment with a brain. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide
