Directed by John J. Curran.
A couple with a broken relationship learns some valuable lessons about love, life, and sacrifice in this romantic drama based on a novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It's 1925, and Dr. Walter Fane (Edward Norton) is a physician and bacteriologist who has become smitten with Kitty (Naomi Watts), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy and socially prominent family. Walter proposes marriage to Kitty and she accepts; however, while he clearly loves her, Kitty is more interested in her reputation than Walter's feelings, as she's recently turned 25, an age by which most of her peers have already wed. Kitty and Walter move to Shanghai, where he sets up a practice and she takes a lover, the British Vice Consul Charles Townsend (Liev Schreiber). When Walter learns of his wife's infidelity, he becomes furious, and impulsively volunteers to travel to China to work in a village stricken with a major cholera epidemic. While Walter's actions are meant to punish Kitty rather than reflect his own benevolence, the daily trials of living in a community in crisis have a striking impact on the couple, giving them a new and deeper perspective on their relationship. The Painted Veil is the third screen adaptation of Maugham's best-selling novel of the same name; a 1934 version starred Greta Garbo and Herbert Marshall, while Eleanor Parker and Bill Travers played the leads in a 1957 remake titled The Seventh Sin. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"When Edward Norton first starts speaking in an English accent, I thought "great, that's all I'm going to listen for...him messing up an accent." I soon forgot all about that as the story and characters are so gripping that you soon become entangled in their situation. FANTASTIC cinematography throughout and a wonderfully understated score round out this film. My only gripe is that it is ANOTHER remake of a film classic, but in fairness, it's adapted from a novel, so I suppose that fact makes it fair game. All in all, a wonderful cinematic experience. "i have a wonderful picture of all my movie ticket stubs from this year in a pile but i can’t get it transferred to my filmblog (yes, i save my ticket stubs and scrapbook them at the end of the year…i know, it’s sad really)! armed with discount movie coupons, i saw 118 movies this year at the theater and, as usual, it was really hard to narrow them down but here’s my list, for what it’s worth. some are from 2006 that i didn’t see until later. my 15 favorite movies at the theater in 2007the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert fordthe diving bell and the butterflythe lives of othersjunothe painted veilonceno country for old menthe darjeeling limitedwaitressstarting out in the eveningsunshinefirst snow zodiacin the shadow of the moonacross the universehonorable mention (alphabetically)2 days in paris 3:10 to yuma51 birch streetdirty dancing (20th anniversary)dreamgirlshairspra yinto the wildthe jane austen book clubkiller of sheepknock ... "THE PAINTED VEIL****PG-13 for some mature sexual situations, partial nudity, disturbing images and brief drug content.2 hrs. 5 min.written by: Ron Nyswaner (from a novel by W. Somerset Maugham)produced by: Sara Colleton, Jean Fracois Fonlupt, Edward Norton & Naomi Watts, & Bob Yaridirected by: John CurranFinally got around to seeing this one. I remember when it came out it received four stars and I bookmarked for my future movie queue. Since the movie has some capable actors, takes place in a certain period and has location going for it, I figured it's quite possible that it would warrant this high rating. I was pleased that it did indeed earn such a rating. Hey, that's always a good thing cuz there sure are a lotta crap movies out there. It's a '20's era drama set primarily in China that starts out great and ends up beautiful. Upon writing this review I found out that this movie was adapted from a W. Somerset Maugham novel which was previously made int ... " [More]

"The acting, the story, the beautiful scenery ... *sigh* ... it doesn't get much better than this. You may never see characters grow like this again. Your heart breaks for both of them, you root for both of them, despite their obvious imperfections that make you, many times, not like either of them very much. " [More]

"The Painted Veil (2006), one of the best movies of the year, is a wonderfully original and relevant story. It’s original because it’s a romance in reverse. When Walter (Edward Norton) and Kitty’s (Naomi Watts) new marriage sinks from neutral to adultery, we expect the whole thing to end dismally, but the husband and wife slowly mature and slowly grow closer together. The Painted Veil is relevant for the hope it touches in us that we, too, might earn such redemption. When Dr. Walter Fane is home in England from China, he’s attracted to Kitty principally because she is pretty. Although she does not return his infatuation, she agrees to marry him because of subtle pressures from her family. She is shallow, easily bored, and used to luxury; her strengths are probably parties and social tennis. He is repressed, awkward, and unable to chit chat; his strengths are probably scientific research and concrete problem solving. They have almost nothing in common, their m ... " [More]

"I cannot remember a movie Ed Norton has done that I disliked. This is an actor that really takes his sweet time reading and selecting. The Painted Veil didn't nearly get as much credit as it should have. The direction was excellent. The and body language displayed by both main characters where quite meaningful and very distinguished. A true to joy to watch! " [More]

"In The Painted Veil stuffy Ed Norton and spoiled Naomi Watts meet, get married and come to loathe one another almost instantly.  Watts is coerced by her husband into leaving behind the parties and priveleges of 1920s high society for cholera-ridden China, alowing us to watch these two wholy unsympathetic characters face up to one another against a backdrop of beautiful mist-ladden scenery. (8/10) " [More]

"The Painted VeilMaybe I'm crass, but I found Edward Norton's distain for his wife to be more convincing than his love. It felt like the breaking of a woman by a vengeful man. The Piano comes to mind right off, but this film lacks the confusing sadism of Harvey Keitel which becomes a deep and passionate love.  It's that twist that never comes. He is made a saint of sorts instead. Fanny and Alexander has that cruel husband as well. There are lots of them in film. Once were warriorsEd Norton is almost grateful for the opportunity to be cold, not cruel. He makes her feel like her life has no value and her situation is completely desperate. It's a pretty f'ed up situation. But I enjoyed it well enough. I think it was well acted. I like Naomi Watts because there is something broken about her appearance. She seems already shattered somehow and I'm intrigued to find out what's the matter with her. That made the opening of this film seem a bit of a stretch. I di ... " [More]

"I loved this movie. The scenery, the acting, the period costumes, the melody and theme were all exceptional. I was engrossed in the time and place. Edward Norton is terrific and Naomi Watts is absolutely superb! She lights up the screen. This movie is academy award materiel, and needs to be shown to a much wider audience. I give it a 5!!!
