In the world of the emperor penguin, a simple song can mean the difference between a lifetime of happiness and an eternity of loneliness. When a penguin named Mumble is born without the ability to sing the romantic song that will attract his soul mate, he'll have to resort to some fancy footwork by tap dancing his way into the heart of the one he loves. Directed by Babe mastermind George Miller, Happy Feet tells the tale of one penguin's quest for love, and features an all-star cast of vocal talent that includes Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Elijah Wood, Nicole Kidman, and Brittany Murphy. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

"Until last year’s brilliantly directed Ratatouille, all of Pixar’s animated features could be summed up with one word (toys, bugs, monsters, fish, superheroes, cars). Then the more complex plot synopsis of “rat functions as a culinary Cyrano in a French restaurant’s kitchen” came along and ruined the studio’s tradition of simplistic scenarios. Fortunately, this year Pixar is back on track with Wall-E, a movie that can be summed up as being about, in a word, robots. But in their pipeline they’ve got a couple sequels (Cars 2, Toy Story 3) and a couple multi-word synopses (2009’s Up and 2011’s The Bear and the Bow are, at the least, each described with two words: old man and fairy tale, respectively. Only 2011’s Newt could have been pitched using a single word: newts. So, while Pixar seems like it currently has enough on their hands, I’d like to suggest a few more single-word pitches for animated films in order to get things back to basics: Birds - They’ve given us a movie featuring ... "One thing I think that we can all agree on is that people love penguins. 2005 brought us the surprise hit March of the Penguins, which became the second highest grossing documentary of all time after Fahrienhiet 9/11. It was not surprising, then, that the animated musical Happy Feet would do well in 2006, but what was surprising was well it did- a huge blockbuster, it ended up being one of the year's highest grossing films, blowing away the year's many other animated features. I had no desire to see Happy Feet until I learned it was directed by George Miller, who is probably the best and certainly the most consistent director thatAustralia has produced, giving us classics like the Mad Max movies and Lorenzo's Oil. Miller had worked with family/children's material before, to great success (some critics called his Babe: Pig in the City the best film of 1998), although I hadn't seen them. But could make a strong animated film, that would appeal to adults as well as kid ... " [More]

"Happy Feet came to me by way of that co-worker who owns a gajillion movies and lends them out to people, particularly me. I told her I wanted to borrow this one because it won the Best Animated Feature Oscar, so I thought it had the potential to be really cute and kind of original and worth my time, and she thinks it's a cute movie too. I mean, the name "Happy Feet" and a cute-looking penguin on the DVD cover were extremely inviting elements to me, and I thought I'd be left with happy feet of my own.If you recall, Happy Feet was up against Cars and Monster House in the relevant Oscar category. The feeling I'm left with is that this movie was mediocre, kind of boring, and definitely not the movie to which I would have given the Oscar, of the three available nominees. Cars and Monster House were both superior films on every level, and after viewing this movie, I can't for the life of me fathom why Oscar decided to favor the penguins. Perhaps it really w ... "2006 has turned out to be the year for digital animation. From talking cars to suburban turned forest animals it seems like we've almost seen it all…or so we thought. The fresh and upbeat penguin-filled musical 'Happy Feet' is the thirteenth digitally animated film to be released this year. And as expected, people are eating it up. Some have gone as far to say it's the year's best. There was better this year, but 'Happy Feet' is okay. In 'Happy Feet' we are given front row seats to the birth and growth of a penguin by the name of Mumble who is voiced by Elijah Wood. He's different from all the other penguins. In a world where finding your "heartsong" is crucial, poor Mumble isn't able to keep a tune at all. Interestingly enough though, he can dance up a storm. Unfortunately this is frowned upon and ends up causing him great distress. Eventually the elder penguin Noah, who is voiced by Hugo Weaving, accuses Mumble of brin ... " [More]

"Yes there are funny parts (Robin Williams steals the show) and it's got a good message, yada yada, but it's uneven and the writing could have been better. Seeing suggested human female curves on penguins was not attractive. And why did Elijah Wood's character stay downy for the whole movie? Small points, possibly, but they were distracting. They might not have been if the writing had been better. Not all the music was great, either. " [More]

In 2005, March of the Penguins identified a real appetite among moviegoers for flightless waterfowl. (As movie characters, mind you, not menu items). The next year, Happy Feet drove that phenomenon over the top, grossing just shy of $200 million on its way to upsetting perennial favorite Pixar for the best animated feature Oscar. The victory was an upset not just because Pixar's Cars was better than expected, but also because Happy Feet isn't as good as the numbers suggest. George Miller's film does benefit from a delightful concept. According to Happy Feet, the mating ritual made famous by March is actually a matter of mutual serenade, with penguins finding their soul mates to the strains of modern pop music. But Happy Feet gets kind of stuck in this concept phase, never blossoming into an involving narrative. Mumble, voiced by Elijah Wood, is your standard outsider -- insert your favorite ugly duckling metaphor here. But his supposed deficiency is that he dances rather than sings -- a complementary skill, one would think, whose uniqueness should elevate him, rather than ostracizing him toward a mission of heroic redemption. This mission allows for some strong set pieces and breathtaking images of the Antarctic landscape and fauna, but it also brings audiences into contact with two super-annoying Robin Williams characters, both voiced as politically incorrect racial stereotypes. By the time it's finished, Mumble's journey has gone places that stretch even the minimal logic required for a kids movie. Perhaps that gets at the shortcomings of the entire film. While it's infectious enough to slot right in as a new classic for young children, and visually advanced enough to wow audiences of any age, it's also flawed enough that adults won't want to join in on their kids' inevitable repeat viewings. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide
