Teen rivalry in a small Southern town sets the stage for this dramatic interpretation of the novel by S.E. Hinton. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, The Outsiders tells the story of the ongoing conflict between the Greasers and the Socs in rural Oklahoma. C. Thomas Howell stars as Ponyboy, the youngest of three orphaned boys who pal around with the local hoods known as the Greasers. When Ponyboy and his friend (Ralph Macchio) get into a deadly confrontation one night, the two go on the run from the cops, and they grow up quickly and soon realize the insignificance of their petty posturing. Matt Dillon stars as the tough-as-nails leader of their group and Patrick Swayze appears as Ponyboy's oldest brother. A host of other 1980s Brat Pack celebs fill out the cast. Dillon later appeared in another Coppola adaption of a Hinton book, Rumble Fish. ~ Bernadette McCallion, All Movie Guide

"Often there comes a time when a bad (or inept, or failed) movie will unwittingly tip its hand. It could be a piece of dialogue that encapsulates a central flaw, or it might be a device that functions as damage control. In Gypsy 83, it’s a chapter when Gypsy and Clive, en route to a singing competition in New York, spend an evening with a more or less retired singer, Bambi LeBleau (Karen Black). She is congenial, down-to-earth, unperturbed and dishonest only in the sense that she is trying to put a brave face on adversity. Black has been acting for at least thirty years now (Five Easy Pieces, Nashville, Easy Rider) and her screen presence and skill are so effortless that they too often go unnoticed. Her performance appears to infect Sara Rue (Gypsy) and Kett Turton (Clive) who seem completely different in this sequence, and outshines them in the rest of the film. She’s invested in the role, but experienced enough to trust her intuitions. When they decide to leave Bambi b ... " [More]

"this is the movie my friends and I watched the most in high school. we'd fall asleep to it, have it in the background, or just watch it as a default. We still quote, or misquote it, and it still ranks up there as one of my faves. BE FOREWARNED: The 2-Disc Colletor's Director's Cut that came out in 05 or 06 was awful and ruins the movie. Coppola adds crappy surfer music throughout, adds unnecessary scenes that take you out of the movie, and has the cast reunite for a commentary (which is possibly the worst commentary ever, washed up actors reliving the glory days). BUY THE OLD VERSION DVD, if you get it, that's the one that hits home. " [More]

"Didn't we ALL read this book in the 80's? Not only was it an "all-star cast at it's worst", but this is the same man that directed Godfather I &II and The Conversation. I've heard this is one of his favorite films. Wow! Stay golden, Francis. " [More]

"Point Break - Don't put me in a cage, Johnny Utah.Notting Hill - Hugh gets the girl (Julia Roberts) and gets to run his book shop. I feel so happy.Bull Durham - It now plays like a movie made for middle-aged, under-sexed women. But it's fun.The Outsiders - An all-star cast at its worst. But still, Dallas Winston should be alive today if not for those damned cops.Scary Movie 3 - It's just plain funny. Especially the Pamela Anderson part.P.S. Tmoney, you should feel no guilt over loving Snakes on a Plane. " [More]
