Directed by Michael Mann.
Writer and director Michael Mann updates the groundbreaking television crime series he created in the 1980s with this stylish thriller. Ricardo Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) and Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) are two police detectives working undercover in Florida; Tubbs is smart, cool, and resourceful, while Crockett has his own way of doing things, though he stays close enough to the rules to stay out of trouble. Their latest assignment is to get the goods on Arcangel de Jesus Montoya (Luis Tosar), a local drug kingpin whose men are believed to be responsible for a handful of recent murders. In order to infiltrate Montoya's operation, Tubbs and Crockett pose as powerboat racers willing to use their talents to pilot drug-smuggling ships for the right price. The detectives' ruse works, but as they dig deeper into Montoya's inner circle, they become involved in a dangerous operation that will take them to Haiti and Cuba, where neither the Miami Police Force nor the United States government can help them if things go wrong. Crockett also begins walking a risky path when he begins an affair with Isabella (Gong Li), a woman high up in Montoya's organization. Miami Vice marked Michael Mann's third consecutive directorial effort with Jamie Foxx; Foxx appeared in Mann's Ali and Collateral, and has been announced to star in a future project written by Mann, The Kingdom. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Ok, I'm probably the only retard who forgot Infernal Affairs 1-3 was the basis for the Departed. That aside, this movie was fantastic. I've seen Departed - enjoyed it. But Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai have acting chops galore. Actually, the entire cast is 100% believable. It's an amazing crime drama exploring moral shades of gray in the context of undercover police work. Michael Mann's Miami Vice did that very effectively, also. But Infernal Affairs is the best undercover drama I recall seeing on DVD -- ever. (I will admit that I'm still a sucker for the undercover action flicks like Bad Boys). If you haven't had the priviledge of picking up this DVD, don't watch the trailer yet!!! I haven't seen parts 2 & 3 (which I assume won't be as good as 1), but I can't pass up buying the 3-pack DVD box from Amazon for $30. " [More]

"Fimoculous points to “Part 1″ of Flashing Lights, Spike Jonze’s method of paying the mortgage whilst struggling to finish Where the Wild Things Are/new music video for Kanye West. Rex brands it as “basically hip-hop’s ‘November Rain’, but I see it more as a Colin Farrell-less Miami Vice. So, yes??????even though I’m no Kanye fan, I totally love it. ""Miami Vice"..with Michael Mann it's as much about the fantastic locations and the "boys toys" as anything isn't it?in this case, superfast boats..No need to set the characters up..we know what they do..As far as the T.V. show goes, i remember liking the title sequence with the Ferrari and the Jan Hammer music..pity he didnt get Jan Hammer (or Jan Akkermann even ),to do the score, instead we get a sub-"Nickleback" type band doing the awful "In the Air tonight" by Phil Collins..plot-wise ,there is a believable "love" story ("star crossed" ,of course, Drug dealer/undercover cop).. Colin Farrell ..great eyebrows..Li Gong... beautiful, recognised her from"2046" Jamie Foxx does very little ,very well...ultimately "eye candy", but it's Michael Mann eye candy... " [More]

"I got the DVD ages ago, but I did not really feel like watching it, I've read so many negative reviews about it. I just got around to open the box on this lazy Saturday evening. What a nice surprise! Good, solid action movie, totally satisfying, simple fun. I need more please! " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski Whether you got hooked on the television series back in the ’80s or are about to get your first taste via the big screen, Miami Vice can make the world of drug trafficking look like an exciting career choice. You can be one of the bad guys—lord, middleman, lackey—or one of the good guys, such as Vice’s fashionable undercover detectives, Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Whichever side you’re on, navigating this world successfully apparently takes certain skills: You have to scowl all the time. You have to keep your voice flat, unless you’re about to blow someone away. You have to feel at home in exotic locations, staying cool when you’re fronting in a foreign language and looking hot when you’re, say, salsa dancing with the requisite underworld stunner. And, most important, when discussing a strategy, you have to quote the Eagles: “Let’s take it to the limit one more time,” Tubbs tells his partn ... " [More]

"As an experience Miami Vice was satisfying for some parts but quite… flat on the whole. Colin of course is always satisfying. Even with a blond mullet. And my god, the man can dance as well! It must be destiny… Err anyways. What always drew me to the original series was the atmosphere. There's this sort of definite Miami Vice feeling you get, like the excitement at the pit of your stomach when stepping into a nightclub combined with the sadness at the end of an evening after too much drink and too much… everything. The cool and hedonistic combined with the ugly side of life. It always fascinated me how they did that, with the style and the music. The film definitely had some of those atmospheric moments in it, just not enough to carry the whole thing through. The plot was a bit run of the mill and not awfully interesting. The cinematography was quite fascinating, moving in between the slick neon-lit coolness and this grainy almost documentary-kind visual world. ... " [More]

"MIAMI VICE (2006)***rated R (for strong violence, language and some sexual content)2 hrs. 15 min.written by: Michael Mannproduced by: Michael Mann & Pieter Van Bruggedirected by: Michael MannIn the 2006 Miami Vice world you can forget the white suits and flared hair of the '80s. This glitz is gone, but the grit is still there and Mann gives us some sharp-edged material that truly shadows any recollection of his TV series. It's all here – his signature cinematography, strong characters, and tightly woven script. While the dialogue grips your attention (it has to cuz unfortunately, many of the characters mumble their lines which is why I watched it with English subtitles) with its lightning quick pace, the intricately confusing plot is equally as cold and heavy as the aesthetic elements of the film. Instead of being cool to behold like Mann's stellar outings with "Heat" and "Collateral", however, this film taxes the soul and confuses the mind. Yet, with ... " [More]

"just a few that i can remember that was highly recommended but i found very disappointing is Brockeback Mountain, Night at the Museum, and MIami Vice.First of all Brockeback Mountain ,I found better homosexual movie a than this that had better and stronger characters,Too bad cause cause i really like the actors and actress in these movie but the story is like a daytime soap opera which is disappointing.Secondly, Night at the Museum,i was not laughin or entertained; The comedy is for children under 10 yrs. old.I expected more from Ben stiller. And last is MIami Vice, nothing like the 80's show.overdrawn and tooo long and the acting by Gong Li was horrible.I have seen Gong LI prettier and in better suited roles for her.I loved gong li in her chinese movies(Raise the Red Lantern, etc).I have also seen Colin Farrel in much better roles like Minority Report,The Recruit ,and A Home at the End of the World .Incidentally,A Home At The End of The World is a lesser known, yet better script ... The Miami Vice movie will not remind anybody of the colorful, stylish television series. Michael Mann's big screen reimagining of his quintessential 1980's show trades pastels for grainy digital video. This is a necessary change for Mann as he has no interest in doing a campy film - a sense of humor not being one of Mann's strongpoints. For his particular style to work, Mann's stories need to carry some existential weight. His best films (Heat), Manhunter, Thief) use their slick style in order to get inside the minds of criminals, killers, and cops. The story he cooked up for Miami Vice hits all the familiar story points from his representative work, as well as from pedestrian episodes of any cop show. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are fine as Crocket and Tubbs, but the plot offers no surprises either in their characters or in the work they do to hunt down the drug kingpin. We've seen the undercover cop fall for the girl of the bad guy, and we've seen the good guys save the willful but kidnapped wife of one of their own. Mann is talented enough to transcend familiar material, but the physical look undermines him. There is nothing realistic or gritty about the tale being told, and that fact is underscored when the look of the movie is supposed to indicate the kind of naturalism achieved on something like an episode of Cops. The cinematography also clashes with Mann's typically precise shots. He frames his images so exactingly that one is always aware of the stylist behind the camera. This severity of Mann's formalism clashes with the realism inherent in any footage shot on video. Between the misconceived visual scheme, and the bland story, Miami Vice disappoints both Mann fans and genre enthusiasts. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide
