Directed by James McTeigue.
Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta takes place in an alternate vision of Britain in which a corrupt and abusive totalitarian government has risen to complete power. During a threatening run in with the secret police, an unassuming young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) is rescued by a vigilante named V (Hugo Weaving) -- a caped figure both articulate and skilled in combat. V embodies the principles of rebellion from an authoritarian state, donning a mask of vilified would-be terrorist of British history Guy Fawkes and leading a revolution sparked by assassination and destruction. Evey becomes his unlikely ally, newly aware of the cruelty of her own society and her role in it. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

"Now that we’re sure there’s an Avengers movie on the way, and that it will be tied into the movies Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Ant-Man and Captain America (full title: The First Avenger: Captain America), it’s time to begin speculating on what other characters will be cast to fill out the team’s roster. In addition to the four characters starring in their own preceding titles, as well as cameo-man Nick Fury, there’s a good chance we’ll see Vision and Black Widow rounding out an even six team members. Yet I speculate on the basis that I haven’t picked up an issue of any Avengers title in at least a decade. Still, I’m excited about the film and have hopes of seeing at least one of my favorite, deserving superheroes end up on the big screen in The Avengers since none of them will likely get their own movie. Plus, a bunch of them allow for more Marvel movie tie-ins. So, I ask that Marvel Studios feature a lucky seven teammates and showcase at least one of the following come 2011: Ms. ... " [More]

"Alan Moore, my favorite comics author of all time, has been getting a lot of publicity lately. At least, a lot of publicity considering he "retired" a few years back when he turned 50. Watchmen the movie is getting nearer to completion, he just released the new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen book, the Black Dossier, and he had a recent guest spot on The Simpsons. It's that last one that throws me a bit; Alan Moore is such a hermit, and seems such an iconoclast, the severe, important artiste, that to see him on the Simpsons, tearing off his shirt and forming an odd superhero group with fellow artists Daniel Clowes(Ghost World) and Art Spiegelman(Maus) was almost beyond belief. Alan Moore is already known to movie audiences, even if they don't technically know of him. Many of his works have been adapted for the screen so far, and every single one was done without his support, which explains the lackluster finished results. When I call Alan Moore a master of the c ... " [More]

"I simply loved this movie it takes a very different take on the average action movie. It makes you care and love the charicters and makes you think that they are real. It opens with a you getting a fell of the charicters and what the world has turned in to. the world is a world of darkness and a goverment that rules by fear and when things seem to be at their worst is when a man who only named as V apears and begins to give the citizens of this twisted world hope. I dont want to give a way the ending for any one who hasent seen it but this movie has every thing Drama, action, and comedy. this is a more intelligent movie then some of the trash out their. If you havent seen it then you should go rent a copy and wach it and if you like it then go buy a copy. The movie is a little slow and you have to pay attention to the story but it is a excilent movie and I would recomend it to anyone. " [More]

"Great topic. I have to admit, even the trailer for 23 made me want to vomit. It's possible we saw two different trailers. And I totally agree about watching trailers as a favorite part about going to the movie. In fact, when there is a movie I really want to see, odds are I have been anticipating it for months upon months mostly just based on the trailer. I'm actually going to list movies that were just very different than the trailer because it is not often I am severely dissapointed by a film (as I usually follow critics recommendations before I actually see it).1. Fur - I don't know if anybody saw the trailer but it made the film look so creepy and mysterious. Turned out it was just Hollywood schlock.2. A Dirty Shame - This was a John Waters film, and the trailer I thought looked hilarious. It wasn't. It was slap stick, screw ball, perverted humour that only a junior higher would be enthralled by.3. Noi - The beauty of this trailer absolutely took my brea ... " [More]

"By Tricia Olszewski V for Vendetta is set in a futuristic Great Britain, but make no mistake: The themes of lies, loss of liberties, and spin control that dominate this adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s graphic novel have everything to do with red-statism run amok. The antihero of the story, a former prisoner simply named V, is out to change the U.K.’s now-fascist government, which posts signs around London that read, “Strength through unity, unity through faith.” The administration preapproves television scripts, too, and maintains a “vault of objectionable materials.” It even denies its citizens butter, because...because it’s for their own good. So you want to root for this radical—after all, he’s introduced saving a young miss who’s out after curfew from a team of horny patrolmen. But then V says, “Blowing up a building can change the world,” and suddenly you don’t know whose side you’ ... " [More]

"“V for Vendetta” uses a symbolic parallel world to the one we currently live in as the backdrop of the story. A world, where the state and those in power use FEAR and FEAR based threats which are nothing but propaganda to maintain control of the public, and to continue to push their agendas gaining more power and control. False promises of ensuring the public’s safety against threats that are not really there keeps the population in check, and snuffs the freedom that once they had. This was a well adapted and written screen play, and well directed / produced film that gives you a choice to either dig deeper into the symbolism deeply embedded into the plot, or just enjoy a great story and a film. A great movie worth seeing more than once. A must see category. " [More]

"V FOR VENDETTA***Rated R (for strong violence and some language.)2 hrs, 12 min.written by: The Wachowski Brothers (based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore) produced by: Grant Hill, Joel Silver, Andy Wachowski, & Larry Wachowski, directed by: James McTeigueBack in 1987, I remember seeing the original comic book issues of V for Vendetta at the comic shop I would frequent in high school. I didn't know too much about Alan Moore's 12-issue maxi-series except that I thought it was mysterious and had some cool art by David Lloyd. I recall seeing a cover of one particular issue worm's-eye view looking up a brick wall and seeing a dark figure with a flowing cloak running along or jumping off the wall. I wanted to know who that person was. I found out he was a British vigilante/freedom fighter named "V" and then I wanted to know what his "Vendetta" was. It appears Evey Hammond feels the same way.The year is 2020. America is left decimated by a plague. London is unde ... " [More]

V for Vendetta could have easily been a cliché dystopian fantasy set against a stock totalitarian backdrop. It could have also been a heavy-handed warning about the power of fear in the post-9/11 world or, still worse, a wordy treatise on the philosophy of government. In actuality, V for Vendetta manages an almost impossible compromise between these options. Those banking on the Wachowski brothers' trademark balletic action sequences and epic explosions will not be disappointed, while those worried about the brothers' tendency to get lost in their own exposition (a la the Matrix sequels) can have no fear. This movie is fun, enthralling, and thought provoking. Hugo Weaving's meticulous voice acting and deft gesticulations rival the movements of trained dancers as he brings V to life, while Natalie Portman provides a full range of emotion and believable development as we watch her transform from frightened speck within the masses to fully liberated citizen of her own mind. The two find a strong dynamic on which to build their both tangible and symbolic onscreen relationship, and this is the same dynamic that provides the story itself with such a strong backbone. V himself acknowledges that he is a man acting as a symbol, summarized best with V's own exclamation, "Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. There is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof." As a result, the symbolic quality of the story itself is not at all difficult for the audience to understand. By the end of the film, legions of masked and caped citizens descending on the houses of Parliament in improbably perfect formation come off not as unrealistic, but as a beautifully stylized illustration. V for Vendetta succeeds where the Matrix sequels failed because despite its disinclination to answer all of the questions it poses, it holds tight to a focused, cohesive theme. This can be attributed to first-time director James McTeigue's ability to place a coherent story at the heart of his philosophizing. There is no simple answer to what role vengeance should play in a revolution, but V for Vendetta leaves to the audience not only the question but the option of whether or not they want to answer it. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide
