Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman.
Jigsaw, the diabolical criminal who captured the imagination of horror fans in the 2004 hit Saw, returns in this equally bloody sequel. Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) is a police detective who, after discovering the aftermath of a particularly gruesome murder, is convinced that Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is up to his ugly tricks again. Matthews's hunch turns out to be correct, but the master criminal proves to be disconcertingly easy to capture. As it happens, Jigsaw is eager to be put behind bars in order to throw the authorities off his trail as he once again punishes people who in his eyes have transgressed the boundaries of acceptable moral behavior. But instead of trapping two people in a filthy dungeon where they must engage in a terrible contest in order to win their freedom, eight people have been locked away by Jigsaw, and they must torture their bodies and minds to achieve the terrible justice Jigsaw seeks. Saw II was written by Leigh Whannell, who also scripted the first film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"Saw II put Jigsaw right back into his bloody work, And every minute of it was amazing. The beginning of the film introduced you to one of Jigsaw's updated traps.....The venus fly trap.....I think that by beginning the film with an on the edge scene was a glorious touch. Of course, "There Will Be Blood" as a tagline has to tell you that it's going to great, But my favorite and one of the most memorable movie moments wasn't bloody at all, The trap itself commited to an old American fear. The needle pit. I'm not a squemish person none the least but as soon as Amanda looked at Xavier I began to squirm like a little kid.....The scene was portrayed to be so real.....In my opinion it was the best scene of the triology because of the way it did affect me. The acting was superb, Tobin Bell as Jigsaw and Shawnee Smith as "Amanda".....If you haven't see these films, I highly recommend them. The storyline was amazing, Especially since even the smartest m ... " [More]

"Having the movie start with a large group of people trapped together was a nice touch, and they stuck with the "killer among you" thing. That was pretty sweet. Like the first one, there was tons of blood and gore. Thankfully, this one didn't have the action/events drag out longer than necessary, so that left more time for different and sicker deadly situations for the group to keep it together and pull through. Which, of course, was a lost cause anyway. I loved knowing that little fact. LOL " [More]

"Just that. In horror-dom, there seems to be this mandatory bravura, this stolid attitude of "that wasn't scary" or "that was lame." I believe, however, if you can find the chinks in this armor, you can pry the plates apart and find what really gets beneath someone's skin, what really scares them. Case in point: in Saw II, one of the most squirm-inducing sequences for a lot of viewers, despite the brutal violence and gushing gore was the infamous needle pit that Xavier so courteously treated Amanda to. A lot of people simply were taken to the edge by that scene, deeply affected. I, on the other hand, didn't bat an eyelash. Now, I get through horror in part because I know it's not real (save those tasteless Italians...) and that, moreover, I know how they do it. There is one thing - only one - that puts me in my place and makes me realize I'm not invulnerable to the horrors of Horror. An instance in Dead Men Walking speaks to this end and in fact lays out my ... " [More]

"The first Saw was about a group of people that, from a serial killer's perspective, were taking advantage of their own lives or some other "sin" they were committing. So it seems this man named jigsaw decided that he should be the one to teach these people a lesson to change their ways by "playing a game" with them that involved, you guessed it, death. Of course they put twists and turns in the movie to keep you at the edge of your uncomfortable seat. Now that he's still alive, barely, they made a sequel titled, what was it again? Oh yeah, it's named "Saw II". After watching a guy walk through razor blades and having stomach acids bursting out of him on the 1st Saw, I was skeptical about seeing Saw II. One of my friends kept telling me that Saw II was a lot better than the 1st. Then on the Christmas of 2006, one of the presents presented to me was Saw II. So after about a month I decided to watch it. When I finished the movie, I wanted to t ... " [More]

"Of course, as creator of http://www.bloodgutsandgore.co m, I would have high things to say about this series, ruthlessly demented and unrestrainedly violent. Rated a 6/10 gore-wise on said site, this is a cut (ahem) above absolutely anything Will Ferrell could ever dream of. " [More]

"Just seen Saw II last evening. I absolutely loved it. While categorized as a horror film this movie and it's predecessor are really thrillers. Oh, they have the required blood and gore necessary to put them into the horror genre, but the twists and turns of the plot line keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat like a Hitchcock thriller. In this second installment the Jigsaw serial killer is up to his old tricks. He selects another group of people to punish for their weaknesses whose lives are related through the one bad cop who put them all away unjustly. I won't give this one away, but the end will definitely suprise you. " [More]

The quick-turnaround sequel that could, Saw II murders its way to the screen with all the blood and mind-numbing twists that made the first one such a curious hit. With its spastic editing and gore-shop grime, the follow-up certainly nails the same hyperkinetic rust-colored nightmare of its predecessor, but it also shares the same gimmicky attitude that mired it as well. This time there are more twists than you can shake a stick at, with a higher number of dime-bag idiots bickering their way through its deadly and convoluted maze. When it comes down to it, though, Saw II might be a slightly better film. It is more of the same no matter how you look at it, but at least the finale isn't as much of an implausible mess. And yes, it does deliver one of the best cringe-inducing hypodermic needle freak-outs of the year, which has to amount to something. Still, there's nothing much else to really crow about with this flashy slice of gruesome entertainment. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
